Laguna grande fajardo puerto rico: Laguna Grande Bioluminescent Bay | Discover Puerto Rico

Laguna Grande – What To Know BEFORE You Go

  • Overview
  • Tours & Tickets

The Basics

Visitors can set the water aglow and create a trail of light with every stroke of their paddles during guided nighttime kayaking tours. Trips are usually offered around the cycles of the moon, timed to the darkest nights. Some tours also combine kayaking with an afternoon nature walk to La Mina Falls in the nearby El Yunque National Forest.

There are only a handful of places in the world where bioluminescent plankton is consistently found, three of which are in Puerto Rico. In addition to Lagunda Grande, this natural phenomenon exists in Mosquito Bay on Vieques Island and the bay at La Parguera. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is surrounded by red mangrove trees, which are native to the surrounding El Yunque rain forest and provide vitamin B12 to the marine plankton.

Bioluminescent Night Kayaking| Laguna Grande | Transportation

Amazing experience and great guides. If you have even a little kayaking experience you will be fine. It doesn’t say on the ticket you need to call (only on the main page) so an FYI for international travellers the call can be costly which is annoying so I think they need to evolve even a little and allow those of us travelling internationally to simply send a message on the Viator app. Other than this it was a great trip and magical

Good experience to see Bioluminiscent but beware of lots of mosquitoes.

Elanie_R, Jun 2022

Natural One Puerto Rico- Laguna Grande Bio Bay Kayaking

Make sure to spray lots of bugs spray. There’s a lot of mosquitoes for pre-departure. During the Kayaking, you’ll definitely get wet since you will be Kayaking in a dark lagoon. Our was 7:45pm and we could hardly see each other. Once you are in the main area for the bioluminiscent, you will not be able to take pictures of the bio bay. But. We enjoyed it and the staff were very organized and nice staff.

Kayaking at night is great

Natural One Puerto Rico: Laguna Grande Bio Bay Kayaking

Kayaking at night is pretty unique. I would recommend that you wait until the Moon is gone as it is difficult to see the bioluminescence in the water. I do appreciate the tour guide bringing a tarp to make things darker, and I do appreciate how amazing it is to save the kayak at night in a lagoon.
The staff was nice, some of the people in our group were a bit rowdy, but all in all it was a good experience

Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking Tour 7:30pm | Laguna Grande, Fajardo

Fun family time even for us that we never had kayak before. Staff made sure we could maneuver to the lagoon safely. Only comment would be that the free time was too short

How to Get There

Laguna Grande is located in the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, just off the shores of Fajardo, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) or an hour’s drive east of Old San Juan. Tours typically depart from San Juan or Luquillo, which is 9 miles (15 kilometers) away.

When to Get There

Kayaking trips frequently set out in the early evening around sunset, launching from Las Cabezas with a tour guide or instructor. The best time to experience the bioluminescent bay is when the sky is especially dark due to little or no moonlight, so try to book your tour around a new moon and avoid days surrounding a full moon.

El Yunque Rain Forest

Sometimes coupled with a tour of the bioluminescent bay, a visit to El Yunque Rain Forest is a must-do for nature lovers visiting Puerto Rico. It is the only tropical rain forest in the United States Forest Service and features well-defined walking trails, lush landscapes, and plenty of wildlife such as the Puerto Rican parrot and the Coqui frog.

10 bays of the world that are almost unbelievable.

Since ancient times, the blue light of water in the dark caused people both fear and admiration. Hundreds of years ago, no one even knew about such a phenomenon as luminescence, so such illumination was shrouded in many legends and myths. In the 18th century, the secret of glowing water was finally revealed. It turned out that many marine life have the ability to glow in the dark.

For most of them, this illumination is quite a common mechanism that allows them to survive in their habitat. In some microorganisms, such a glow occurs as a result of mechanical irritation. When a lot of such inhabitants accumulate near the shore, they form an absolutely incredible highlight of the water. We have collected 10 places where you can watch this fantastic installation, which cannot be compared to any other light show.

Light Lagoon, Trelawney, Jamaica

Immediately after visiting the Bob Marley Museum and the Rum Factory, Trelawney County is a must-see. This should be done strictly at night – when the entire beach is illuminated by luminous plankton.

Vaadhoo, Maldives

Unicellular dinoflagellates inhabit the waters near the island. The mechanical forces of the waves cause an electrical impulse in them, which triggers a bioluminescent reaction, as a result of which, at night, the water emits a bluish light.

Matsu, China

No tourist route passes through this place. However, during a trip to China, it is worth stopping by here to admire the incredible night landscapes of the coast after sunset, which are highlighted by single-celled organisms.

La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico

There are three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico. One of them is La Parguera. The best time to visit is during the plankton breeding season when everything turns blue.

Mosquito Bay, Vieques, Puerto Rico

This is Puerto Rico’s most popular spot to watch the plankton glow. Local plankton is considered the brightest. The bay is usually accessed by kayak.
