Amazing views/beach
This was our favorite beach from our vacation and spent all day there. Spectacular views just be VERY careful in rock climbing easy to scrape or get hurt. Take snorkeling gear or a vendor there for you to purchase at slightly higher prices. Swimming, relaxing, tubing, snorkeling, all you could ever ask for with breathtaking views. Take an umbrella or arrive early to find a spot under tree but limited. Also, take drinks and snacks. For adults there was a vendor there selling homemade Sangria that was EXCELLENT and refreshing!

Breathtaking views
Beautifull views and access to Cuevas de las Golondrinas but very windy so sandy. Snorkeling was great! I would still definitely recommend beach if visiting in summer months Jun – Aug.

Very nice beach
We went to this beach just for a change of pace in beaches. After reading all the reviews about car jacking and theft, we parked our car in one of the off-road places where we could see the car from where we were on the beach. There was no one else on the beach but we had “rip tide current” so we didn’t go in the water. This beach is a beautiful tropical sandy beach and I would recommend going.

Amazing but tricky to get to
These are amazing and to say they are off the beaten path is an understatement. But once you get to them, they’re beautiful and different from other beach experiences and sights.
We got there with google maps, but once there the entrance was a mystery! We spoke to a local who directed us to an entry way about ten feet to the left of the gate where google maps shows the locations as.
So you have to park your car and walk in through the small entrance and walk across a long field. The path is visible and will show the way. As you get closer to the end you’ll see a fork, to the left is a beach (which is very nice) and to the right is a dirt road with greenery… the latter is the way to the natural pools. On that path you’ll have to find an entrance through the bushes which again has a path that’s (somewhat) visible. You have to walk through the mini forest and climb a rock at the end and once you see the rock you’ll know you’re at the top and will be able to see the ocean, a beautiful view but you’re not there yet… you have to then walk to the right through very dangerous and pointy rocks. If you have sneakers or water shoes it should be easier. You’ll see two natural pools and again, have to be very careful climbing down to them but once you’re there it’s worth it. It was to me at least. Like nothing I’ve ever seen before.
I can’t stress enough that you should have appropriate foot gear, I had rubber slides and made it there (and back) carefully but while i was IN the water, I didn’t take them off not to step on sea urchins, but ended up slipping and cutting my foot on a rock and stepping on an urchin with the other foot.

Rocky beach
Aug 2022 • Couples
A very nice beach off the beaten path. The beach has an unmarked parking area. We went during the week so parking was not an issue; I would imagine on the weekends it may be a bit more complicated. Once at the beach you should have your own snacks and beverages because I did not see anyone or anywhere where you could get something to eat or drink.
The beach itself is nice, you need to bring your own chairs and umbrellas because they are only a few shaded spots. The beach has rocks and coral all around it, there is a small opening which allows water into the inlet. The water is crystal clean, you can see your toes when in it. Unfortunately the beach has many rocks which makes it difficult to walk in and swim. They have a few areas where you can walk in without having to navigate the rocks. The rocks are quite slippery so be careful if you decided to walk over them to get to a swimming spot. Overall it was a nice beach but not one of my favorites.

Beautiful and wild
Jul 2022
Our family (4 adults, 4 teens) loved exploring this beach. It’s rocky and rough, so probably not great for small children. Wear water shoes with a good grip, especially if you want to climb the limestone rocks. It looked dangerous to me, but lots of people were doing it. Note that there are portable restrooms, but when we visited on a Monday they were padlocked shut. There were vendors selling pina coladas and snacks.

Perfect for wave jumping
May 2022 • Family
The waves get pretty big here, not enough for surfing but great for boogie boarding and wave jumping. Wear some type of water shoes because the rocks are a little sharp and slippery, which I found out the hard way. Also be careful of the sea urchins there are a ton further out. Not so good for little kids but wonderful for anyone wanting a little bit of an adrenaline rush and a more exciting swim. I went at about 6pm.

Awesome snorkeling, cool rock exploring, calm waves for relaxation
Mar 2022
Gorgeous, calm beach! We went during the day on a weekday, and there were a few locals around, but not many people, which was nice. We enjoyed exploring the rocks and natural pools there (watch out for sea urchins in those) and relaxing on the beach.
We brought snorkeling gear with us and that was a really unique and fun experience! Definitely worth your time, it’s very safe as long as you stay away from the mouth where it connects with the ocean. I would check current reports before going, because the calmer the waves, the better snorkeling experience you’ll have. As it was, we still got to see quite a bit.
You can rent an umbrella there for $10 but there are plenty of trees for shade.

Absolutely loved it here! The beach area was very clean and lovely (parking lot maybe not so much but that’s what shoes are for). The local vendors are super friendly and engaging.
There’s a vendor who rents umbrella and chairs for a few dollars who also tends the spotless out houses on the beach . Seriously, spotless. And him and his friends will treat you like family when you’re there .
The sangria guy (coconut truck) is really friendly and his sangria is delicious!
And food trucks generally show up if tourists are present so that’s a plus!
Overall one of the most beautiful places I’ve even seen in my life so far. Must experience for yourself

Very disappointing
Nov 2021
On day 5 of our trip we decided to visit Mar Chiquita. We decided to do so after seeing beautiful overhead pics and videos online. Several online sites list this as a “must-do” while visiting Puerto Rico. On this day we visited two beaches – Playa Puerto Nuevo and Playa Mar Chiquita (see my review of Playa Puerto Nuevo). The highlight of our trip to Mar Chiquita was having lunch at Pan Pan Pizzeria which was a surprisingly incredible artisan pizzeria (we live in New Jersey where we have the best pizza). However, I digress, Mar Chiquita has an ample size free parking lot. There are a few vendors in the parking lot but, as I mentioned in other reviews, the vendors on this island are not aggressive (but be sure to haggle if you engage them).
As you step on the beach you first encounter a concrete slab with a painted flag which seems to be a “must-do” pic. Sadly, broken glass was strewn all around it. After snapping the obligatory pic of my boys by the flag, we continued our approach onto the beach. There was a lot of debris on the beach and I detest a dirty beach. The layout of the beach is cozy and is shell shaped. There is a rock wall with an opening In the middle thru which the waves enter. On the day we visited, the ocean waves crashed thru the opening with considerable swells and the edge of the shoreline seemed to be mostly flat rock. The view of the ocean cutting in was pretty phenomenal. Not one person was in the water and for good reason. If the undertow didn’t suck you out to see or smash you against the rocks, it would likely slam you against the rocky shoreline.
I added some pics but there are better pics online. I wish I could add video. About the only folks that would enjoy this beach in its current state are drone photog enthusiasts. If the beach was clean, it would be a great spot for sunbathers that enjoy a beautiful view. However, with the water too rough and the beach being too dirty, there really wasn’t any reason to stay.
There was what seemed to be a natural wading area to the right and some folks were in the water in this area but it seemed small and we had so much fun at Playa Puerto Nuevo that we drove the 10 or 15 minutes it took to drive back to that beach.
What’s really disappointing is that this is a unique and beautiful beach but it has been badly neglected and needs a lot of maintenance. Be careful as a local told me the large swells and rough water conditions are common. Locals will tell you not to enter because it’s too rough and if you see someone in the water – don’t trust it – it’s likely a crazy tourist not realizing how dangerous it is. There are cleaner and much calmer options available for ocean bathers.
– No lifeguards (typical of local beaches)
– No bathrooms
– No showers
– Rough water
– Debris-filled beach
– Free parking

Hundreds of Sea Urchins & razor sharp corral.
Jun 2021 • Family
Go to a less violent and calmer beach. Based on the description, I thought it might be a nice starter beach for the kids and for me to do a little fishing after seeing the pics beforehand. There were quite literally HUNDREDS of Sea Urchins on and around the razor sharp corral that surrounds this inlet. We stayed for around 30 minutes and after managing to scrape both legs to the point of bleeding and the kids stepping on sea urchins spikes which were difficult to avoid in the water, the kids and I were done. Plus it’s certainly not the most well kept beach in PR and we hit many on our vacation that were gorgeous.

Awesome Beach – Day Trip from San Juan
Apr 2021 • Family
Playa Mar Chiquita is a beautiful natural cove with amazing waves that crash out in the open sea just outside the little inlet. The waves come in and out of the cove consistently throughout the day which makes for some fun swimming. You can hike the cliffs and walk to see the open rough ocean for more amazing views. While there stop by El Sabor Del Norte for a cold beer, mixed tropical drink or some great lunch. Well worth the trip!
