Convention Center District | Discover Puerto Rico

View of fireworks at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan.

Wine, dine, meet, and unwind at the Caribbean’s most vibrant meeting destination.

Why settle for a convention center when you can have the services and amenities of an entire district? The Puerto Rico Convention Center District takes the stress out of planning by putting everything your group needs in one dynamic location. And with the upcoming addition of Distrito T-Mobile San Juan, this buzzing destination is only getting bigger and better. Here’s a look at what the Puerto Rico Convention Center District has to offer.

Meet

The centerpiece of the district is the Puerto Rico Convention Center, widely known as the largest and most technologically advanced venue in the Caribbean. And if 600,000 square feet of space wasn’t enough, a new 44,000-square-foot plaza at Distrito T-Mobile will soon house outdoor stages and the region’s largest LED screen.

Dine

No matter what your delegates are in the mood for, there’s a restaurant nearby to satisfy their cravings. A few steps from the Convention Center, the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino offers six dining options, including Texas de Brazil steakhouse, Choices Urban Bistro, The District Lounge & Sushi Bar, and Metropol, a Caribbean eatery.

You’ll also find a mix of American chain restaurants and neighborhood eateries in the surrounding Miramar area. Exciting new additions, including a rum distillery, are expected in 2020.

The Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino offers more than 500 rooms.

Stay

A variety of hotels in the heart of the district give you plenty of options for rest and relaxation. Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino offers just over 500 guest rooms, an expansive casino, a spa, and an outdoor pool, plus more than 35,000 square feet of meeting space.

Hyatt House San Juan and Hyatt Place San Juan/City Center offer rooms and suites designed for business travelers, plus a wide range of amenities. Recently inaugurated, Aloft Hotel San Juan Convention Center brings an additional 175 rooms, plus a bar, infinity pool, and state-of-the-art fitness center.

Celebrate

The Convention Center District is home to Puerto Rico’s premier live entertainment destination with the debut of a 6,000-seat venue featuring more than 100,000 square feet that can be used for corporate events and other functions. Additional entertainment offerings coming in the year ahead include a movie theater, nightclub, TV/radio studios and more.

    Author Lisa Robbins.

Last year Ian Smith decided to shorten his working hours by taking one day every two weeks.

“It’s not because I retired with one foot – it was for my own mental well-being,” he says.

Ian, who is the chairman of Bishop Fleming in the UK, is the primary caregiver for his wife, who suffers from a degenerative brain disease. And he firmly felt that he needed to regularly spend time away from the hustle and bustle of home and work in order to relax.

He deliberately spoke very openly about his decision. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive – especially from women, who are four times more likely than men to have to reduce their working hours in order to take care of children or even parents.

“There is a lot of pressure not to talk about these issues, and it really helped me understand the guilt people – again, especially women – feel when they have to work part-time. And the brand! People make so many unfair assumptions…»

This experience helped Jan with his responsibility on the board of directors for diversity and inclusion in his firm. He also used it to stimulate wider discussion about mental health for senior male business executives, for whom it was a taboo subject.

He was recently recognized for his efforts when he was shortlisted for the 2020 Male Diversity Champion of the Year. UK Women in Accounting and Finance Awards.

Although he was not a winner in this case (he was highly regarded by the judges), he has an important message on how to make our firms stronger by making them more open and hospitable. So I contacted Jan to discuss his experience.

“Variety is critical to any business,” he told me.

Part of the problem with the profession – at least in Western countries – is that “there are a lot of people like me who are responsible – white, of the same age and often from a very privileged position,” he says. Of course, in other countries, other groups can gain a foothold at the top.

“You need more variety to create teams with different ways of thinking.”

It includes gender and sexual orientation, as well as disability, education and economic status, and even personality types.

“This is diversity in the fullest sense of the word.”

Yang adds that “our customers don’t want clones… They want people to use their real authentic identities when we deal with them. And people can only do that if they’re comfortable that we’re really happy that they’re being themselves.”

That’s why, over the past few years, he has helped build a women’s mentorship network at Bishop Fleming.

    The company improved maternity benefits.

In addition, they analyzed the firm’s interview and recruitment process to reduce the impact of unconscious bias, that is, stereotypes directed against certain groups without even realizing it.

They made interview panels more diverse and changed the language of some job ads to be more inclusive and open to part-time and flexible work.

Recently, Bright Futures, their personal development program for young managers, has focused on social mobility. Bishop Fleming is one of the UK’s leading auditors in education, “and we want to support people with different backgrounds coming into the profession,” says Ian.

The impact on the firm was significant.

“We have more female partners than we used to, and a dialogue that didn’t exist before,” Yang says. “We also have more people working part-time in leadership roles – I don’t think some would be sure they’ve tried that before.”

“The atmosphere is more creative than ever, and some of our best client relationships are being developed by women who may not have gotten ahead a decade ago with the old ways of working. Our clients love it.”

His role became possible when he became chairman in 2017.

Yang says some people were “surprised” when he made diversity a personal priority, but leadership on this issue must come from above.

“Almost always led by a HR director. I could count on the fingers of my hands how many times I met with the CEO or managing partner at workshops and workshops on diversity – and it’s wrong. For this to work, you need support at the highest level.”

He emphasizes that he did not work alone.
