Bacardi and the Long Battle for Cuba: A Biography of an Idea

In Cuba, there was no place left for private enterprise and private wealth, since they would compete with the power and authority of the revolutionary state of Fidel. There was no room left for dreams, except for dreams of the achievements of the revolution. Those Cubans who had their own ideas and hopes should have been kicked out, even if they were honest and generous patriots. Fidel said that those who leave his Cuba are gusanos (worms), and when the Cubans spat at those who were in line for an American visa, they did it at his suggestion. “What do those who leave us symbolize? Fidel asked at 1962 at a meeting with medical students. “It’s like squeezing out an abscess. Those who leave us are the pus, the pus that is released when the Cuban revolution squeezes society out. How much better the body becomes when the pus is removed!

Chapter seventeen

Exile

Twice a day, a white Pan American DC-7B landed in Miami, packed full of surly Cubans who had boarded an hour earlier in Havana. Some passengers stepped onto Florida soil and gleefully exclaimed “¡América!” or “¡Viva libertad!”, but most walked out onto the tarmac in silence, while some quietly wept. The painful waiting for permission to leave, the need to abandon houses and all property, the prospect of a long, and perhaps eternal separation from loved ones who remained in Cuba, bitterness due to the fact that they had to leave their native land made the last days in Cuba emotionally unbearable.

Then you had to go through the humiliation and intimidation at the airport, when the customs officers, scornfully grinning, rummaged through their belongings in search of what they could confiscate, felt their pants and reached into their blouses during the last screening, which was deliberately made especially humiliating. After all, the emigrants, after all, were just worms and gathered in their gusanera, which Miami has become.

Pepin Bosch and his son Jorge helped some Bacardi workers who had nowhere to stay in their new place and who had no relatives to support them. Jorge was thirty-five, in Santiago he was a brewer and vice president of the Mexican branch of the company, as well as his father’s representative in the management of factories in Puerto Rico, so he knew almost everyone in the company, from middle managers and up. Jorge rented several apartments in a block in Miami that soon became known as “Little Havana”. If someone could call in advance and warn that they would arrive on a certain flight, Jorge would wait for them at the airport and take them to one of the apartments rented by the company, where there was already a supply of food.

The majority also needed cash, since the Cuban authorities allowed them to take no more than five US dollars with them when leaving the island. If someone ended up in Miami unexpectedly, since he was kept in Havana until the last minute – because of some piece of paper, which, according to the border guards, was incorrectly drawn up, some order of the authorities, or simply at the arbitrariness of a customs officer, – he always knew which phone to call upon arrival, and Jorge or someone else immediately rushed to the airport. When Jorge already had more than a dozen families of Bacardi workers whom he helped, the young man noticed a pattern: for a day or two, the settlers were barely alive from horror, fell down from fatigue and anxiety, and could not even talk about what they have gone through. Jorge would leave them alone – “relieve the pressure” as he said – and the next day he would return to visit them, and then the stories would never end.

Such assistance made the people connected with Bacardi – both employees and family members – a relatively privileged caste compared to other Cubans who found themselves penniless and all alone in Miami.

From 1960 until October 1962, when the Caribbean crisis ended commercial air service to Havana, approximately 170 refugees from Cuba arrived in the US on day , with the vast majority arriving in Miami. Although they were required to have American visas, there were no entry quotas for Cubans, and almost everyone received refugee status. Local and federal immigration and welfare agencies were overwhelmed, and many Cuban exiles had to start life from scratch on their own. However, Bacardi’s extended circle had a support system from start to finish. At Pepin Bosch’s instructions, lawyer Guillermo Marmol delayed his own departure from Cuba to help members of the Bacardi family and company employees obtain travel permits and tickets for Pan Am flights that would normally have to be booked six months in advance.
