Sleepy beaches of the Costa de Oro – Guru’Guay

Guru’Guay thanks the Canelones Balsa and Asociados developers for making this article possible. So far, the Uruguayan branch of the Canelones has not had international prominence in English. Together Guru’Guay and Balsa are working to make the Canelones famous with a series of articles demonstrating why this part of Uruguay is an unexpectedly interesting place to live, work and visit. Guru’Guay’s opinions always coincide with ours. nine0003

The Costa de Oro or Gold Coast in the department of Canelones is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uruguay. However, this may be one of the country’s best-kept secrets because most of the tourists are… Uruguayans.

So what are the Uruguayans hiding? Sleepy beach towns and simple pleasures. The family-friendly seaside resorts of the Costa de Oro are characterized by quiet tree-lined beaches with white sand as powdery as icing sugar. Uruguayan middle-class families have holiday homes here that have been passed down from generation to generation. And nowadays locals – and a few foreigners, especially Europeans – prefer to live permanently on the Costa de Oro. Except weekends and holidays, the beaches are almost always empty. nine0003

At this point, the Rio de la Plata really merges with the Atlantic Ocean, especially as it moves east. The water is mostly blue-green. Some days he is as calm as a mirror. On other days, it looks and acts like a calmer version of the ocean. It is very safe for children.

Activities include sunbathing, swimming, walking and building sandcastles. Parking is a breeze. Perhaps that is why the nostalgic summer air of the fifties reigns on the beaches of the Costa de Oro. nine0003

There are about thirty seaside towns and cities in this region, stretching just over forty miles (70 kilometers) between the Carrasco and Solis Grande rivers and minutes from Montevideo International Airport. Let’s take a tour.

Ciudad de la Costa

Between the Carrasco and Pando rivers lies Ciudad de la Costa, a municipality of about 100,000 inhabitants, and to the north, a few minutes from the international airport. Beaches Barra de Carrasco, Parque de Carrasco, Shangrila, San Jose de Carrasco, Lagomar, El Bosque, Solymar, Parque de Solymar, Lomas de Solymar, Medanos de Solymar and El -Pinar has become home to permanent residents in recent decades. They still preserve the beauty of their beaches.

Gourmet Zone
What was once a culinary desert, with a handful of chivito-serving family favorites, is now home to several outstanding restaurants that take advantage of Canelones’ proximity to both the coast and the countryside. Why change? A new understanding in Uruguay of good food and the arrival of new residents from the more affluent areas of Montevideo. nine0003

Ride the Rambla
A four-kilometre cycle path along the Ciudad de la Costa Rambla, from Calcaño to El Pinar, with places to tie bikes along the route.

El Pinar

El Pinar has four kilometers of pine-lined beaches that give the area its name and offer some sun protection if you’re happy to sit back on the beach. Great restaurants in the area. The kids love sandboarding on the dunes. nine0003

Atlantis

For locals, Atlantis is the “tourist capital” of the Costa de Oro. At 45 kilometers from Montevideo, this sleepy city combines the comfort of city services with the nature and tranquility of a seaside resort. Its two beaches, Mansa and Brava (“calm” and “rough” respectively, as in Punta del Este), are surrounded by pine and eucalyptus forests. In the seaside resort of Villa Argentina, a short walk along the beach, is one of the most emblematic buildings on the Canelones coast: a giant stone eagle’s head, called Aguila or La Chimera, looks out over the water from the promenade. No one really knows why the Eagle was built at 1945 year. Definitely a family conversation topic when viewed from the beach.

Church of Cristo Obrero, protected by UNESCO
Church of Cristo Obrero and Nuestra Señora de Lourdes by the Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste was inaugurated in 1960 and recognized by UNESCO in 2021. It is a 15-meter tower structure built entirely of brick, with stunning curved walls and roofs, without a single supporting column or beam.

Atlantis Fruit and Vegetable Market
North of Atlantis, in the area of Estación Atlantida, Mercado de Cercanía is an initiative of the producers of the region and the municipality of Canelones. Several stands sell organic fruits and vegetables, cheeses, honey and canned food at affordable prices. Route 11 km 164.5 between El Petiribi and Los Paraisos. Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm.

Nearby is Isla Verde (R 11 km 161), an “edible forest” of organic fruits and vegetables, including bananas.

Parque del Plata

One of the largest beach resorts in the area, about four kilometers of beach lined with wide white dunes. The sandbar at the mouth of the Solis Chico River has created a protected area for sea sports and fishing. The municipality of Canelones is currently taking action to restore the dunes. nine0003

The area is also the location of several award-winning local films, including Viaje Hasia el Mar (2003), which ends on the resort’s beach, and Aleli (2019), both Uruguayan Oscar nominations for Best foreign film.

La Floresta

Costa de Oro’s oldest seaside resort takes its name from a company that planted a million trees on the dunes in the early 1900s. Like Atlantida, it is an established resort by Uruguayan beach standards. Local residents have owned holiday homes for generations. During the summer, residents organize family cultural events such as a sleepless night, or a full moon White Night (according to Floresta Mayor Noce Blanca will take place in November 2022.). Its beach stretches from Las Vegas on the Solis Chico River to the Sarandi River, which marks the border with the Costa Azul. A famous resident is one of Uruguay’s most famous musicians, Jaime Roos. nine0003

San Luis

The Interbalnearia route will take you to San Luis at kilometer 62, one of the least developed parts of the Costa de Oro, characterized by quiet beaches and natural forest. The beach and the nearby river Bagre are popular spots for artisanal fishing (for Corvina , anchovy and blue whiting ). Locals line up to catch Pejerri , Majuga and Burriquet and most Uruguayans are willing to fish a little in the shallows at night with flashlights (known as “pesca a la encandilada”). Two of Uruguay’s most prominent chefs, Laura Rosano and Adrian Orio, live in Sao Luis and you can visit them. (see Canelones Gastronomy). nine0003

East Caribe, Los Titanes, La Tuna, Araminda, Santa Lucia del Este, Biarritz, Cuchilla Alta, Sierras del Mar, Santa Ana, Balneario Argentino

Canelones coast becomes more oceanic, with slightly bigger waves, and the landscape becomes a bit more overgrown. On the horizon is the island of La Tuna, which was once the site of wild swimming competitions. Boat fishing and water sports are available at the Cuchilla Alta.

Joregiberri

Set against the hills of Piriapolis, the gentle white sand dunes and the dramatic mouth of the Solis Grande River, the unpronounceable Jauregiberri (re-e-e-BERRY, thanks in the comments) is the last beach on the Costa de Oro. It is home to the first fully autonomous public school in Latin America built from 2,000 tires, 3,000 glass bottles, 1,500 plastic bottles and 12,000 empty cans. You can see the school from the highway. It’s just before the bridge over the Solis Grande river on the right. nine0003

Most Uruguayans will be surprised to see an international publication like Guru’Guay recommend the beaches of Canelones to our readers. Especially as the most famous beaches of Uruguay in Maldonado just over an hour away and Rocha 3-4 hours

As if they consider the beaches of the Costa de Oro too homey and maybe partly because they are literally “too close to home” ( e.g. Montevideo). I would say it’s time for them to reconsider, especially considering how beautiful the beaches, privacy and nature are so close to the capital and literally minutes from the international airport. nine0003

Consider yourself a pioneer.

Top 15 – Islands of Spain

Islands of Spain – an interesting tourist route that combines several holiday destinations. Rich history and color are combined with the resort component. Since the country of bullfighting and flamenco consists of several regions with different cultural baggage, the attractions here are for every taste.

Some islands are located quite close to the mainland, so the impact on their development is appropriate. Others are adjacent to the African coast and developed, among other things, under the influence of traditions that are alien to Europe. As a result, the world has received an amazing combination – special zones of comfort and diversity, at the same time moving with the times in terms of infrastructure and not forgetting their origins. nine0003
