One of my favorite beaches in Vieques
I loved this beach. It has crystal blue waters and plenty of palm trees and gazebos around it for shade. You need a car, preferably a Jeep or SUV to get here. The road to get to Chiva is unpaved (gravel). On your way there, you’ll see a few numbered ‘coves’ along your right side. You can park in any of them to enter the beach. My favorite is #9.

Stunning, almost private beach I’d love to visit again sometime. we took the ferry from San Juan and spent the night on the island. I wish we had allocated more time. We visited several beaches, the tiny Museum in town, It’s a Beautiful island With beautiful Horses running the island and beaches. I’m glad the US Navy was finally pushed out it’s sad to know the damage they did to the island.

Sun Bay is great for easy access to the water. The water wasn’t as clear as La Chiva and Caracas, but it was still a lot of fun and would be great for a day at the beach.

Good snorkeling
Warm, clear waters. Saw colorful fish, sea turtles, rays, spiny sea urchins. Road getting there is pretty bad. We went on a snorkeling tour, but were forbidden by car rental agency to take our rental to Green Beach.

Pretty, remote, strong surf
This beach is accessible down a rough dirt road with lots a thorn filled branches that swipe at the sides of a vehicle. Parking maxed out at about six cars. The beach has nice white sand, clear water and great wave action. The “caves” we’re really just worn out places one the cliff sides. Good place for body surfing and boogie boarding.

Best beach we say on Vieques
Awesome! Perfect Beach.
Very calm, great views, soft sand, clear water and only a few people on this beach.
This beach is about as far out as you can get on Vieques so either you drive yourself or take Vieques Island Tours Beach Bus (787-397-2048) . Most of the cabs don’t want to go out that far.Review of: La Plata Beach

Better Beaches Available
We stopped here following a visit to the Sugar Mill Ruins. This beach is on the Atlantic and not as nice as those on the Caribbean side of the island. The water is gorgeous and there is plenty of room and few visitors. Parking is available and it isn’t so far from Isabel. We much preferred beaches off the refuge and others on the south side.

Mixed review
I wasn’t in love with Sea Glass Beach, but this may have been because I stepped in fire ants on the way down to it. There’s no shade, so you’ll bake in the sun. I bailed pretty quickly, but my husband had a great time looking for sea glass and actually found quite a bit — more than I’ve ever seen at a beach, and pretty colors, too. He had to go around the first rock outcropping (on the left if you’re facing the ocean — he just climbed over, it’s 5-10 feet high) to find it.

Lovely beach
Hubby and I visited Esperanza and the beach in late afternoon/early evening during the week at the end of November. It was very quiet and the only food truck was about to close up for the day. We also explored the Malecon and Old Sugar Cane Pier (both reviewed separately) since they are right near the beach. There were few people and several boats anchored off shore. Several tourist vans arrived at dark when we were leaving, but they may have been heading to the restaurants. The bugs were fierce after dark! Otherwise, a peaceful and relaxing beach. I hope you enjoy the photos I shared.

beautiful mostly quiet spot
A big long beach that takes a beating from the daily easterlies. Shore break is rough, but some break outside when the surf is really going. Lots of natural debris, so its not pristine like, for example Caracas.

Clear blue waters! No toilets or water/food around
I just adore the peaceful times we had here! It’s a lovely beach that sometimes has wild horses and other times wild dogs 😂🤣🙏🏼 there are small water “pools” and long stretches of water to either sides! People from Vieques don’t like coming here because the “vertedero” or trash area of the island is very close by, but the water is so clear! We came here for picnics and yoga! Better than expected, would go back!
Pleasantly surprised with how much I liked this beach. I thought it was gonna be just a pit stop to get out, see what’s there and move on. Most recs are for La Chiva and Caracas so some people don’t take the extended drive to Pata Prieta (only 10-15 min more down the road). But we stayed longer than expected. A nice half moon bay shore but you can still see out past into the ocean. Really nice sand area (soft, no seaweed chunks) and was empty when we went on a week day so we had all to ourselves. Snorkeling was fair, not the best but I still saw a bunch of fish. If I had more time, I would’ve stayed longer or gone back again on the same trip.

Clean white sand beach, clear water. These are all pluses
Minuses:
Without any of the usual amenities. No shower, sun loungers, any stalls, umbrellas
Accordingly, if you are not a local resident and did not arrive in your car with portable refrigerators, high chairs, water, etc. – to be salty after swimming, to lie on the sand if there are no beach towels, and to feel white envy of those who take cold water out of refrigerators and fry meat on the barbecue brought with them))

Beautiful cozy beach in a small bay, easily accessible by car. We were there already in the evening – there were few people, white sand, clean clear water, a beautiful sunset. But in my opinion, in terms of beauty, it loses to Sun Bay.

The cuisine of Vieques traces its history back to the traditional dishes of the Arawak and Taino Indians. Of course, there are differences in cooking, because in the cuisine of the Indians grains, root vegetables, seafood prevailed, and in Puerto Rican, or, as the locals call it, “cosina-criolha”, there are many dishes from meat, legumes, rice, wheat with the addition of vegetable oils, especially olive. This indicates the influence of Spanish cooking traditions, and the presence of herbs, okra and taro – the influence of African traditions. And, of course, the island is not complete without local coffee and rum – a kind of pride of Puerto Rico.
Do you prefer meat? If so, try carne guisada puertoricana, a beef stew with peppers, onions, garlic, potatoes, and olives. Sancocho is another type of stew. Good and pastellon-de-carne – pies stuffed with meat. Eat a mixture of pork and ham in a pot, Creole veal, fried brains or kidneys, stuffed tongue, barbecue pork or suckling pig with fried bananas. If you prefer poultry meat, then take chicken with rice or chicken with sweet and sour sauce. The classic of local restaurants is paella. But a dish with small hot snacks, bacalaitos, is usually served here before the main meal. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
Soups play an important role in Puerto Rican cuisine. Try black bean frijoles negros or sopon de pollo con arros, chicken soup with rice. Each chef prepares fish sopon de pescado in his own way. Galician broth is a soup with pork, white beans, ham and cabbage leaves. Under the long name “sopon de garbanos con patas de serdo” hides a soup with pork, nuts, pumpkin, sausages and vegetables. Asopao is okra soup. Azopao de gandules – pea soup. Azopao de pollo is a soup with chicken, okra, ham and vegetables. Also interesting is the cold avocado soup.
Fish and seafood lovers have something to try in Vieques. Here and baked crabs with vegetables, and fried fish with a sauce of olive oil and spices, and “drunk” shrimp, and lobster soup, and dried cod, which is subsequently used as an ingredient for various dishes. The local cuisine uses a lot of spices and spices, which makes the dishes bright and gives them a rich aroma. There is always local bread, rich buns and white queso blanco cheese on the table. You can also have a snack with rich surillitos or hearty pies with different fillings – emandillas. Espanyola – maize tortillas with potatoes and onions.
Although the island of Vieques is only the second largest after Puerto Rico, the beaches here, if not better, are definitely not inferior in quality and beauty. Here you will find a place for every taste and color. The island is famous for its stunning coastlines – “like a postcard” – among which are the beaches of Blue Beach, Caracas Beach, Secret Beach, Malecon, Green Beach, Navio Beach and Playa Negra Beach.
Playa Negra Beach – a black sand beach – deserves a separate word. Yes, if Vieques can be called the pearl of the Caribbean, then Black Sand is worthy of the title of black pearl – both for the rarity, and for the remoteness of the location, and for the true black color of the coating. The beach is located in the southwest, a few kilometers from Esperanza. You can reach it only on your own two feet. The reward for a long journey will be a stunning view of the secluded coast, framed by weighty cliffs. By the way, the beach becomes black due to the presence of a volcanic mineral – so will your beach towel, be prepared.
Mosquito Bay is a local curiosity that recently entered the Guinness Book of Records. Mosquito is a bioluminescent bay, the brightest of the existing ones and the largest of its kind. In the local waters, for every liter, there are hundreds of thousands of microscopic dinoflagellates, which, as they move, emit a blue-green light, creating an unrealistic picture of what is happening. By the way, there are several such luminous bays around Vieques, but Mosquito is much brighter than all of them put together.
Hombre de Puerto Ferro is an archaeological site in the southern part of the island, located 2 km northeast of the Balneario San Bay. This area is a small clearing with granite boulders arranged in a chaotic manner. The oldest burial place was also found here – the found skeleton of a man is about four thousand years old!
According to research, the found skeleton belonged to a representative of an archaic Indian tribe that inhabited the area in prehistoric times and was the earliest people of the Antilles group. You can also see the skeleton itself – to do this, visit the Fort de Vieques Museum. By the way, the secret of the boulders located in the clearing above the burial has not been revealed: to this day it is not known how these huge stones got here and, most importantly, from where.
The fastest way to get to the island of Vieques is from the capital of Puerto Rico, the city of San Juan. The so-called air taxis will take you to the island in just ten minutes. Regular flights to the island are also carried out by conventional, large aircraft – the flight lasts about half an hour. And, finally, the ferry becomes the most budgetary option for moving, but first you need to arrive at the port of Faiardo on the mainland of the country – ships leave for Vieques every day from here.

The Arecibo Observatory is located in a mountainous region, the main value of which is the world’s oldest radio telescope. It still continues to function and is used to study space objects. Recently, the Museum of Science and Space was opened at the observatory, which tells visitors about the latest achievements of scientists. Be sure to visit the nearby caves of Rio Camai and the Ceremonial Park, which was founded 800 years ago by the Taino Indians.
