Guanica is a coastal town on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico, which has retained an off-the-beaten-path feel offering miles of beaches without crowds when travel season is in high gear in the most popular tourist destinations of the island. You can spend a whole day beach hopping along the Guanica coast. As you drive along the coast on the reserve you’ll find “secret” spots great for swimming, snorkeling, and offshore fishing. The beaches of Guanica offer a unique landscape with more of a desert-like, no other place like it on the island. Some beaches are great for bathing and swimming, some great for long walks, and some really scenic and tranquil with views of limestone cliffs perfect for reading a book and relaxing under the sun.
Gilligan’s Island / Cayo Aurora
We’ll start off with our favorite beach in Guanica which is actually one of the offshore treasures of Puerto Rico, Cayo Aurora is most known as Gilligan’s Island.
Gilligan’s is a pretty mangrove island with crystal clear waters perfect for romantics, nature lovers, snorkelers, and great for kids. The waters are shallow, it’s like a giant natural pool with schools of tiny fish swimming at your feet. The photo below is on a cloudy day when storms were approaching, we show you this one on purpose just to show you how clear the waters are even on a cloudy day. At Gilligan’s you get to snorkel on slow currents along mangroves where you’ll see a variety of fish.

Playa Tamarindo
Playa Tamarindo is a nature lover’s beach like no other in Puerto Rico since is located in the subtropical dry forest of Guánica Biosphere Reserve. The beach is rarely crowded, and very peaceful. There are three sides to Tamarindo Beach, one for lounging and observing the surf, one for playing on the waves, and one for relaxation and floating on shallow waters over grass beds where baby fish play.
Tamarindo Beach is the last beach you can access by car, and the drive is very scenic.

Playa Santa

Playa Atolladora
Playa Atolladora is an obligatory stop for everyone taking a drive along the coast of the Guanica State Forest, it just begs everyone to stop. Heading east you get a peak from the road tempting you to see what’s behind the trees and the water that makes that melodious sound. Driving along the road heading west, cars always stop to take a photo of the beach with its striking shades of emerald green and blue framed by the rocky and sandy shore. Playa Atolladora offers very easy access with parking just across the road. When we visit, we typically find honeymooners and lovebirds enjoying the beach in total peace or have it to ourselves.

Ballena Bay Beach is one of our favorites for walking, the sounds of the waves are loud, the beach is wide and long. Along the way, you’ll find small natural pools for bathing, the scenery, quiet and lush landscape will give you a great escape as you’re totally embraced by the rugged natural landscape of a Caribbean beach. There are mangroves along the shore, many seashells, and old wood that look like art pieces that wash up along the shore giving you many photographic opportunities.

Conocido como el paraíso del eterno verano, este pueblo alberga el Bosque Estatal de Guánica, designado como reserva de la biosfera por las Naciones Unidas, donde puedes disfrutar de caminatas, observación de aves, visitas a fuertes históricos o playas solitarias como Tamarindo o Ballena.
También puedes kayakear a una isla rodeada de manglares nadando en aguas tranquilas y cristalinas con una visita a Cayo Aurora, conocido por los lugareños como la isla de Gilligan. A este pequeño y hermoso cayo solo se puede llegar en bote privado o kayak.

Bosque Estatal de Guánica y Reserva de la Biosfera
Este ecosistema es el mejor ejemplo de bosque seco en la región del Caribe. A diferencia del bosque lluvioso El Yunque, que recibe alrededor de 120 pulgadas de lluvia por año, el Bosque Seco de Guánica recibe solo alrededor de 30 pulgadas. Este maravilloso lugar cuenta con 12 rutas de senderismo bien mantenidas de dificultad media. Además, es un paraíso para los observadores de aves ya que es hogar a variedad de aves exóticas que prosperan en hábitats cálidos. Al contrario de lo que podría sugerir el nombre del bosque, verás mucha vegetación verde, con muchos árboles, arbustos, cactus y otra flora única de este entorno. Entre las rutas de senderismo disponibles, hay algunas que te llevan a playas solitarias como Tamarindo y Ballena. Otro sendero conduce a una zona donde hay cuevas naturales de piedra caliza, y otro que te llevará al histórico Fuerte Caprón, donde encontrarás unas vistas panorámicas inigualables de la Bahía de Guánica.
El bosque está abierto todos los días de 9:00 a. m. a 5:00 p. m. y tiene un centro de visitantes y área de picnic. Es muy importante que lleves calzado resistente ya que caminarás por terrenos sin asfaltar que pueden ser pedregosos, además lleva ropa que te proteja del sol. Ve preparado con bloqueador solar, mucha agua y bocadillos porque no hay kioscos ni restaurantes cerca del bosque.
