The Plaza del Mercado de Ponce (English: Ponce Market Plaza), or formally, Plaza del Mercado Isabel Segunda (Often abbreviated as Plaza del Mercado Isabel II), located in a historic building site in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It was opened in 1863 by Ponce Mayor Don Luis de Quixano. The building was designed by the famous engineer Timoteo Luberza. [1] The Plaza occupies a city block in the Ponce Historic Zone in a grid formed by Atocha, Estrella, León, and Castillo streets. [2] It has room for 65 stalls. [3] It was originally called “Plaza del Capa”. [4]

History

The building was built from the plans of Timoteo Luberza in 1863, which was modeled after Les Halles, for the market of Paris in France. By the time it was built, it was the largest and most modern market in Puerto Rico.

1903 Extension

In 1903 it was extended according to the neoclassical design of the architect Manuel V. Domènech. [6] [7] Meat storage was also added. [6] Even at the beginning of 1900s, Plaza del Mercado enjoyed many years of heavy use and, by 1926, Plaza del Mercado Isabel II was so crowded that the city of Ponce built a second Plaza, Mercado de las CARNES (“Meat Market “) to reduce overcrowding in the Plaza del Mercado. [8]

1941 Extension

In 1941 it was enlarged again according to plans by the Ponce-born architect Pedro Mendez Mercado. [6] [7] In a 1941 remodeling, the original structure, which was not Art Deco, was reinforced with an Art Deco façade. [9]

Building Juan Bigas

Main article: Edificio Juan Bigas

Beginning in 1981, and for the next 26 years, Plaza del Mercado operated from a new building in a grid formed by Guadalupe, Salud, Estrella and Mayor streets, just two blocks east of the historic Plaza del Mercado Isabel II. A new building, called the Plaza del Mercado Juan Bigas building, was inaugurated in 1981 to replace the aging but historic Plaza del Mercado Isabel II building. [10] It cost 10 million dollars to build. This is the building with the largest footprint in Ponce. Inside it are some of the ruins of the old Apolo Theatre. [11] (Teatro Apolo was located on the corner of Calle Salud and Calle Guadalupe. [12]) On June 28, 2010, Governor Luis Fortuno signed Senate Resolution Number 191, the transfer of ownership of the buildings of the Plaza del Mercado de Ponce to Juan Bigas in Ponce Municipal Government. [13] The Juan Bigas building has sat unused since 1990, when the shopkeepers returned to the reconstructed Isabel II building. On April 7, 2011, the municipal government announced its intention to invest $10 million to renovate the Juan Bigas building and turn it into a municipal service center, dubbed “Ponce Servicios”, hosting various public service offices. [14] The renovation of the old Piazza del Mercado Juan Bigas building to be used for municipal public services will occur at a cost of $6,828,000. [15] On July 27, 2011, a news release stated work on the Bigas building would begin in October 2011 at the expected cost at $15 million [16]. A news report on June 26, 2013 indicated that renovations have been completed and the first two floors of the facility will re-open by the end of July 2013. The institutions associated with the occupy structures are: Oficina de Permisos (Office of Permits), Ordenacion Territorial (Office of Spatial Planning), Vivienda Municipal (Office of Public Housing), Historical Archive de Ponce, Office of the White Program Federal Ryan and Banco Municipal (Municipal Bank). The name of the facility is Ponce Servicios. [17] The facility re-assigned “Ponce Servicios” in August 2013. [18]

1980 Remodeling

In 1980 the building was reconstructed again. The 1980 remodeling lasted 9 years – until 1989. [19] Its Art Deco style was further enhanced, following a design by the architect Pedro Mendez Mercado. At this point, the structure had been transformed from a fruit-and-vegetable market square into a crafts mall. [2] [6] Air conditioning was added to the Plaza del Mercado Isabel II in 1984 when the Pitusa supermarket moved there [20]

1992 Remodeling

In 1992 the Plaza del Mercado Isabel II was converted into a multi-purpose building in that it has parking, businesses and private office space.
