BICYCLING MAGAZINE SAYS….

THE WORLDS LEADING CYCLING MAGAZINE PUBLISHED A 9 PAGE ARTICLE.

“But while motorists in, say, New Jersey would have been insane with rage, it turned out that the honking, accompanied by whistles and claps, was like cheering. La Vuelta was big news here, and everyone was happy to come cheer the bravery of the riders crazy enough to try to circle the island in three days. When we stopped for snacks in one seaside village, school children approached us with posters to autograph. We’d come to see Puerto Rico, but we were the ones being watched.”

The Event – Vuelta Puerto Rico

The Event

IN A NUTSHELL…

La Vuelta Puerto Rico is a premier cycling event for endurance athletes looking for a “pro-like” experience. In three days, a ‘fast-paced’ group of international cyclists, divided into three pelotons, cover a 375-mile course that circumnavigates the entire island of Puerto Rico. The route takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes, including the lush foothills of the tropical rain forest, serene coconut plantations, exotic beaches, world-class marinas and every singleton of the 42 coastal towns.

For many, riding La Vuelta is like being part of a professional stage race, without the actual racing. Police escorts and rolling roadblocks keep the international peloton moving through streets occasionally filled with cheering spectators. It is not uncommon to see motorcycles transporting photographers and filmmakers that capture the drama as it unfolds, and a caravan of support vehicles is always present and ready.

Unlike a stage race, La Vuelta features rest stops throughout the day where riders can ‘relax’ for a short period and take in the breathtaking scenery while enjoying local cuisine and Caribbean hospitality before climbing back on their bikes for more pedal-pounding pleasure.

Bicycle tours: when, where and how much

Bicycle is truly the most mysterious form of transport. Judge for yourself. They say that it was invented by Leonardo da Vinci himself – a famous inventor and part-time artist. But scientists dispute, arguing that this is just a legend. The image of a cherub on a scooter, which is on the stained glass window of the Stoke Poges church, built in the 15th century, also, apparently, has nothing to do with any vehicle other than a kind of one-wheeled chariot. And our serf Artamonov, who invented the bicycle in 1800, is also a legend. And there are dozens more. Not a single vehicle has so many legends, which, you see, gives it a certain flair of mystery. nine0007

Whoever invented this two-wheeled miracle, a person from its very appearance got on a bicycle and rode. I went out of town, to a neighboring settlement, to a neighboring country, then slowly, on the sly, traveled around the globe … Cycling is always an adventure. So that you do not reinvent the wheel, we have prepared for you a rough list of the most interesting cycling routes, and some simple rules that will help you along the way.

About cyclists

At first, people were skeptical about cycling competitions. However, when the first heroes and winners who received large cash prizes began to appear, interest in such events increased significantly. nine0007

The first bicycle race was organized in Paris, in 1868, on an alley in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Cloud. A year later, a similar event was held under the name “Paris-Rouen” – a race of 120 kilometers. The participants of this race were also riding wooden bicycles. In the Russian Empire, the first competition of cyclists took place in 1883 at the Moscow hippodrome. Bicycle capabilities improved, and the distances conquered by cyclists increased. In 1891, a significant event for Russian cycling happened: the title of “The First Rider of Russia” was received by Muscovite G. Davis, having won the race of 7.5 miles. nine0007

By 1896, professional cyclists were already competing in the Olympics. However, there was another contingent of cyclists – lovers of travel. In 1911, three fellow cyclists started from Harbin, including a member of the Harbin Athletes’ Society, young Onisim Pankratov. Initially, whose plans included only crossing the Russian Empire and getting to St. Petersburg, but in the process of traveling he came up with a daring idea: to go around the entire globe. Pretty soon, the friends did not get along and the two cyclists left the race. Onesimus stubbornly followed forward through swamps, forests, impassable roads and, exactly 2 years later, at 19In 13 he returned to Harbin again – only from the other side of the Earth. Onesimus was awarded the unique prize of the International Society of Cyclists – a diamond palm branch, for having made the first round-the-world trip on a bicycle in the Russian Empire. Pankratov’s bike ride lasted 748 days, the total mileage of his Gritsner bike was 50,000 kilometers. And during his journey, Onesimus changed 53 tires, 11 chains, 2 rudders, 4 saddles, 4 lanterns and 750 spokes. As they wrote in the newspapers of that time: “Only the frame and fork remained from Pankratov’s original bicycle.” nine0007

Among our contemporaries, we can remember Vladislav Ketov, who, for the first time in the history of mankind, traveled around the earth along the coastline of the continents. In 1991, Vladislav left St. Petersburg. After 9 years, Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America were passed, later the countries of Scandinavia, Alaska and Canada were conquered. Vladislav traveled most of the way on a bicycle, as his goal was to cover this distance in an environmentally friendly transport. Vladislav, like many travelers of this type, traveled without money, earning money along the way by painting portraits. The journey lasted a total of 20 years, in the first stage he covered 144,000 kilometers. For this and other travels, he was awarded the title of “Outstanding Traveler of Russia” (certificate No. 1). By the way, his path continues to this day, the final stage has not yet been passed: Russia. Read other related materials on the site vectorme.ru

About bike tours

Bike tours

Bicycle tours tempt modern people just like our predecessors at the dawn of the invention of the bicycle. Today, many tourist sites offer a variety of bike tours. All of them are divided into categories: with or without accompaniment, with or without adventure, with or without exotic, and so on. There are also MTB tours, this is already a trip on a mountain bike. All of them can be divided into those with a guide or those where you drive on your own along a given route. In any case, they will provide you with a map, organize accommodation in hotels and give you details about local attractions. For your money – any whim. According to statistics, European tourists most often choose unaccompanied tours, it is believed that this is to save money. Probably not just because of this. nine0007

If you don’t want to go far, but just go for a ride, then you can recommend city themed bike rides. So, for example, in 2012, a women’s run in the style of the 60s was held in Moscow, only women dressed in vintage were allowed. The ladies coquettishly twirled the pedals with their heels and ran into the curbs due to the fact that the hats covered their eyes. But the sight was very pretty.

Another question: an independent bike tour. If you want comfort and human conditions, then it is better to go to Europe. These are special EuroVelo cycling routes organized by the European Cycling Federation. The routes cross the whole of Europe and provide an opportunity to admire both the northern cliffs of Normandy and the Black Sea coast of Romania. We also have wonderful places in our country. Very popular are Karelia, the North-West and, of course, the Crimea. nine0007

If you like extreme sports, then choose tours that specialize in supplying adrenaline to your blood. These include extreme cycling tours, for example, trips to the northern latitudes, the Altai mountains or long distances: Moscow-Petersburg or even further. There is also a subspecies: biker tourism. Here the emphasis is not on scenic beauty, but on the capabilities of your bike.

Rules of the Bicycle

Rules of the Bicycle

A bicycle is “…a vehicle, other than a wheelchair, having two or more wheels and propelled by the muscular power of the persons on it…”. That is, you are a bicycle driver and they will ask you the same. But there is a nuance. When you dismount and carry a bicycle, you are a pedestrian. Here is such a cycling dualism. It is worth driving in the direction of movement of all other vehicles, but if you are walking and carrying a bike, then you need to go towards the traffic flow. In a good way, you should move along the bike path, but in view of the fact that this is still a rarity, especially in our latitudes, you have the right to ride on the carriageway, to the right of the main lane. Driving on the side of the road is allowed as long as you do not interfere with pedestrians. But this does not apply, for example, to Belarus. There, you can only enter the roadway in exceptional cases. Fanatics of cycling advise you to definitely get a sound signal, a headlight and reflective clothing – for safety. nine0007

Near a bicycle

Near a bicycle with a beautiful backdrop

If you go on a bike tour, the bike will be your best friend during the trip. It goes without saying that you will not be able to pass by the cycling events of the world. You will be in Peterhof, look into the Museum of Imperial Bicycles. Here is a collection of vintage bicycles that Alexander II, Alexander III, the last Emperor Nicholas and their families loved to ride. You can see the famous French wooden “bone shaker”, a tandem bike and much more interesting things. You can also ride replicas of vintage bicycles and understand the feelings of the residents from your own experience 19centuries. And in Germany, you can look at Eurobike – this is the largest bike review from around the world. Here the fashion for this or that model, design or form is set, you can find interesting accessories and spare parts. An exhibition takes place in the town of Friedrichshafen.

What to take on a bike trip

Do not think that this will be a pastoral journey in the middle of flowering meadows and valleys. Well, that is, meadows and valleys, maybe there will be, but liters of sweat, dehydration, burnt and weathered skin can also be. Therefore, all cyclists are strongly advised to prepare. Even if you are traveling as part of a tourist group, civilization awaits you only at the hotel. And before that, you will need: a first aid kit, a variety of mosquito and sun repellents, durable professional equipment (helmet, knee pads, etc.), comfortable clothes, special bicycle gloves and a roomy backpack. You will have to forget about the common girl’s dream from the movie “to ride a bike in a dress” and get bicycles. By the way, travel clothing should be waterproof and windproof. The easiest way is not to bother with all this, but to come to a professional sports store and dedicate the saleswoman to your grandiose plans. When she finds out where and, most importantly, what you will ride, she will immediately, for sure, take pity and bring what she needs. nine0007

Cycling with the times

Bike ride – route ideas

Isle of Wight (UK)

There is no name for the route because the entire cycle route is an island in itself. The small island is famous for its chalk cliffs, green hills, the fact that it can only be reached by sea and the fact that Queen Victoria of Britain loved to relax here. In addition, there are 321 kilometers of various cycling roads – ride, I don’t want to. It is easy to rent a bike, along with this you will be given a map of routes and main attractions, as well as equipment and locks for the bike. Rental places can be found quite often, they also carry out delivery. Cycling along the roads, you can see St. Catherine’s lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Europe, the landscapes of the Needles and Culver rocks, ride along the trail, 108 kilometers long along the coast, and when you get tired, take a walk through the Dinosaur Museum, visit the yachting center sports and admire the old churches and abbeys. If you don’t feel like going just like that, then take a look at the annual Isle of Wight Cycling Festival in September. Take a ride around the island among like-minded people. nine0007

Digger Road (Norway)

The Digger Road, or Rallarvegen, is Norway’s most popular route, where you can cycle past fjords, waterfalls, mountain ranges and other breathtaking views. Rallarvegen was built during the construction of the railway in 1909, it is one of the oldest in Norway. You can start from the towns of Haugastøl (there is a railway station and car parking) or Geilo and further – along the foothills, past the fjords, past the Kjosfossen waterfall, past the old Bergensbanen railway, along the Hardangervidda plateau and past other interesting places in the fjord region. The nature here is harsh – mosses, stones, bumps, everything is as it should be. By the way, it is forbidden to make fires in the summer in the country, but there are not enough forests in this area, so we think nothing bad will happen if you warm yourself on a windy deserted plateau by the fire. In extreme cases, you can take a gas burner with you. You can finish the route in Flam or Voss. Mass skating is also organized along the diggers’ road, the schedule and conditions can be found on the website. It is better to take gas supplies, warm clothes and tents with you – the road is quite wild, the night can catch you not near a cozy hotel. nine0007

BicItalia (Italy)

BicItalia is a network of cycling routes throughout Italy. The site of the Italian Federation of Bicycle Friends presents all these roads in all their glory. Cycling routes in the cities are also available: in Ferrara, San Remo, Giulianova and others. Among other things, you can stay at a specialized bike hotel, they are concentrated throughout the country, but in Lombardy, Marche and Emilia-Romagna they are the most. In Milan, you can find Bike Me bike rental points, and you can pay for the rent through the website or at the parking lot itself, which are located in large numbers near metro stations, stops and main tourist sites. If you really like sports, sports, then the annual marathon in the Dolomites, Maratona delle Dolomiti, is for you. The marathon takes place on the first Sunday in July. Avid travelers in Italy suggest cyclists with children to go on roads without much ups and downs, for example, along the Pista Ciclabile road in Northern Italy. As you can see, Italy is quite a cycling country, for every taste. nine0007

Moscow-Vladivostok (Russia)

Vladivostok is perhaps the most frequent final point of all Russian routes, not only bicycle routes. Perhaps this route is somewhat extreme, but it’s worth it, eyewitnesses say. It will take you about 85 days to cover a distance of about 10,000 kilometers, so it’s also a long journey. If you have time to spare, go for it. Of course, you will not find any bike paths and bike hotels in the vastness of our vast country, that’s the point. If in doubt, remember the same Russian firefighter Onisim Pankratov – a man saved up for a bicycle for three years and traveled the globe on it in two years. In fact, it’s not all that scary. It will be enough for you to purchase a reliable mountain bike, equipment and make a detailed route with stops, hotels, halts, etc. Most travelers first drive through the route in cars to scout the situation and, as a rule, their path runs along the Trans-Siberian Railway. Experienced assure that roadside hotels even have Internet. There are even extreme sports like Evgeny Ostapenko, who deliberately chose a difficult route that does not pass along the highway, but through places of interest to him, including Central Asia. He traveled in two stages, from Moscow to Abakan, and after resting for a couple of months, he went to Vladivostok. His detailed diary is worth reading for anyone who wants to repeat this. nine0007

Great Alpine Road (Switzerland-France)

This tourist route abounds in the beauties of Europe, because it starts on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the town of Thonon-les-Bains and ends in Menton, on the Mediterranean Sea. This route is considered difficult, but on the other hand, the movement of cars is limited on the road and it can be considered that it serves exclusively for the pleasure of tourists. Throughout the journey, you will observe the change of fields, meadows, mountains, dense forests, lakes and turbulent rivers. The places are really poetic, rather deserted, and the front of the heights is rather sharp. When preparing for a trip, do not confuse this road with the one of the same name, which is located in Australia. Of course, you can also ride along that one, but you can only see the Alps and abandoned churches in the middle of lavender fields only here. Road number – D902. From October to May, high-mountainous areas are closed for driving – everything is covered with snow, at the height of summer it is also advised not to go – there are many tourists. The ideal time to travel is September. By the way, Nice is located not far from Menton, and if you want to take a break from a bike ride on the Cote d’Azur, then this is your option. But even here, throughout the city, there are parking lots of blue bicycles that you can rent. By the way, the annual rental will cost you 25 euros, taking into account the deposit for the bike – 150.

Iron Curtain (Barents Sea – Black Sea)

The Iron Curtain Trail is a new track, not fully developed, but repeating the old line of the notorious Soviet “Iron Curtain” separating Russia from Europe. The route was invented historically and ironically – by the Germans. On the EvroVelo website it can be found under the number EV13. The route is divided into three parts. The northern one is Norway, Finland, the Baltic states, the Kaliningrad region and Poland with Germany, the German one is along the border of Germany with the GDR and the southern one is from the Czech Republic through Eastern Europe to Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. The length of the route is about 7000 kilometers and special signs are placed along all roads: a blue square with 12 five-pointed yellow stars in a circle, inside which are the letters ICT (Iron Curtain Trail). The creators of the idea of turning a negative image of the past into a positive one believe that this journey not only repeats historical borders, but also contributes to a better recognition of the history, culture and customs of European countries. At the same time, get acquainted with the mores of European customs, it’s no joke – to travel about a dozen countries in one route. nine0007

Royal Road (Finland)

The oldest Finnish road and the country’s first tourist route. It runs from Norwegian Bergen to our St. Petersburg, so this route can be considered quite “ours”, given that Finland was part of the Russian Empire, which means that the Royal Road has also seen Russian emperors. Built in the 14th century, the road is still in use today, considered the best route for Finnish cycling. The old road passes through the territory of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia, the Finnish section is called the “Royal Road in Southern Finland”. On the way you will meet pastoral pictures from the life of rural Finns, fishing villages and ancient churches, the ruins of castles in Rassepori, the Moomin Museum in Turku, the Sveaborg fortress, the cathedral in Porvoo and much more. On the way you can meet campsites or specially designated places for fires and tents (on the tourist map they are marked as such: a tent and a fire), where, in addition to a brazier, you can even find a toilet, firewood, a saw and a canopy with seats. In general, Finland, and in addition to the Royal Road, has a huge number of bike paths and bike-friendly trails. nine0007

Crimea

Crimea is ideal for cycling. Here you can wind along the mountain serpentine of the Bakhchisarai region, ride along the edge of the sandy beach on the western coast and explore the eastern Crimea with its abundance of picturesque bays. Extreme travel will allow the mountainous Crimea. The territory of the cave cities in the south-west of the peninsula is interconnected by mountain paths. Thus, you can go not only on the highway. In the Bakhchisarai region there is a network of pack trails, which the locals call “donkeys”. Bicycle touring experts advise using these trails for travel, because donkeys and donkeys will never dodge through the heights in vain, but will carve out the perfect fast track for themselves, so use this ancient secret. In the Balaklava region, extreme mountain descent competitions take place, if you are interested. One of the famous short routes of the Crimea is the Sunny (royal) path. It lasts about 7 kilometers and connects the royal palace in Livadia and the Ai-Todor estate in Gaspra. Previously, it was created for horseback riding, but now it is here for pedestrians and cyclists. nine0007

Great Ocean Road (Australia)

A true symbol of Australia after kangaroos and koalas, the picturesque, impressive 243-kilometer path along the south-eastern part of the country, passing from the city of Torquay to Warnambool, attracts millions of foot, car every year travelers and, of course, cyclists. For pedestrians, the Great Ocean Walk trail is laid along the road. Speed is limited throughout the track, so you can safely enjoy the views of sheer cliffs, deserts and the ocean, stopping where you please. The Great Ocean Road is also the largest military monument – its construction began during the First World War in memory of the dead Australians. You will pass Port Campbell National Park, the famous 12 Apostles rock formations, Victorian vineyards and Australian Aboriginal villages. This continent can easily be called a cycling continent, for example, in Melbourne you can easily find automatic bike rental points for just a few dollars per hour. It is allowed to drive on any roads, including motorways. nine0007
