Stormy events in Puerto Rico: an eyewitness account – Radio Sputnik, 07/18/2019

Turbulent events in Puerto Rico: an eyewitness account

Puerto Rico is rocked by the most massive protests in decades. Mindia Gavasheli, editor-in-chief of Sputnik in the USA, spoke about what was the last straw of patience for the inhabitants of the island on Sputnik radio from the scene. nine00 pages of his personal text messages from the messenger Telegram, in which, as many believe, he spoke insultingly about the inhabitants of the island. Rossello said that the working group did not find “illegal actions” in the published correspondence. The leak led to riots: residents took to the streets, the police used tear gas. According to Rossello himself, quoted by the resource, 21 police officers were injured due to the actions of the protesters. In addition, the protesters covered the walls of houses with spray paint. Mindia Gavasheli, editor-in-chief of Sputnik in the USA, spoke on Sputnik radio about what is happening on the island. He explained why he thought Puerto Ricans reacted so strongly to the content of the governor’s private chats. According to him, Puerto Ricans are unanimously outraged by the behavior of the governor, but he is not going to meet the demands of the protesters. Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island with a population of more than 3.5 million, has the status of an “unincorporated territory”, it is administered by the United States authorities, but is not considered an integral part of them. Although all Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens by birth, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in an American presidential election, and the island’s residents are not covered by the American Bill of Rights. “Suitcase – train station – Puerto Rico”. Trump defends migration policyThe US president has suggested to his opponents from the Democratic Party that they go back to their countries of origin and clean up there, not in the USA.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló has refused to step down amid mass demonstrations by residents demanding his resignation following the leak of compromising messages from his Telegram messenger, McClatchy reports. nine0003

Last week, almost 900 pages of his personal text messages from the Telegram messenger leaked online, in which, as many believe, he spoke insultingly about the inhabitants of the island.

Rossello stated that the working group did not find “illegal acts” in the published correspondence.

The leak led to riots: residents took to the streets, the police used tear gas.

According to Rossello himself, quoted by the resource, 21 policemen were injured because of the actions of the protesters. In addition, the protesters covered the walls of houses with spray paint. nine0003

Sputnik Editor-in-Chief in the USA Mindia Gavasheli spoke on Sputnik radio about what is happening on the island.

“Puerto Rico is rocked by the most massive protests in decades. Thousands of people took to the streets of San Juan the day before, protesting against Governor Ricardo Rossello and corruption on the island. The fact is that about 900 pages of the governor’s private chats, and in these chats he discusses with his acquaintances, relatives and cabinet members the situation on the island. In these chats he speaks insultingly about the victims of Hurricane Maria, which killed more than four thousand people on the island, and mocks his voters,” said Mindia Gavasheli . nine0003

He explained why he thought the people of Puerto Rico reacted so strongly to the contents of the Governor’s private chat rooms.

“The fact is that the island has not yet recovered from Hurricane Maria, which hit in 2017. Corruption scandals do not stop on the island. Just last week, two members of the government of Ricardo Rossello were arrested – the ministers of education and They are accused of corruption and misuse of federal funds. In the current situation, this was the last straw that overflowed the cup of patience, and thousands of people literally surrounded the governor’s palace, demanding his resignation. For the time being, the situation was quite peaceful, but (Wednesday) closer to midnight, the police started firing smoke bombs and rubber bullets, as well as spraying tear gas. It is known that numerous arrests were made. But people here are serious and intend to continue these actions, one of them is scheduled for Thursday night,” Mindia Gavasheli said. . nine0003

According to him, the people of Puerto Rico are unanimously outraged by the behavior of the governor, but he is not going to meet the demands of the protesters.

“We did not find a single person who would say: the governor is right and he should remain in his position. Everyone we spoke with believes that, of course, after what happened, the governor should leave. Nevertheless , he still refuses to do this, citing that he did not do anything illegal. He says that these are his private conversations, and that in this way he relieved stress after a hard day, trying to somehow joke about the events through which he had to pass within 24 hours,” said Mindia Gavasheli. nine0003

Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island with a population of over 3.5 million, has the status of an “unincorporated territory” administered by, but not considered an integral part of, the United States government. Although all Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens by birth, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in an American presidential election, and the island’s residents are not covered by the American Bill of Rights.

Trump threw out the white towel. And then he washed his hands Did he work it out at home or did the idea come to him spontaneously – but the US president did something that no one exactly expected from him. Dressed according to the principle “to whom Trump will send.” Probably wanted to know if it’s hard to be a god. Now he knows: easier than the president. nine0003
