Run down, mostly closed

May 2022 • Couples

Do not listen to Puerto Rican advertisements. This place is not that great. They have some food trucks and a subpar beach. The only reason it gets any stars is because there is a cool place there to stop and feed the pelicans and tarpons. Do not plan out for more than 30 mins of your day if you plan to stop here

Sad once a beautiful place Nature has it now.

May 2022 • Business

The place is closed down. So sad it is just for ghosts. You can still visit the fountain and the beach.

La guancha was a beautiful place, happy place for families and place for music and dancing. Now it is not so sad paid my condolences.

Character and Charm

Mar 2022 • Solo

Rating 5 stars for its character and charm. Was told by locals that back in 2020 they were hit hard by an earthquake and have not recovered. Imagine that after hurricane Maria hit. Two catastrophes that toy haven’t recovered from.
The entire park was shut down and secluded other than one stand selling souvenirs and a man selling coquito. So sad. No where did I find online that things were this bad in Ponce. Breaks my heart. The amusement rides are still up but no one allowed to ride. I pray Ponce rises again one day.
Def make it out there to support those in need. The ride from San Juan is a majestic, unbelievable site. Mountains galore!!!!! The most breathtaking. You won’t regret it.

Beach and great time

Jul 2021 • Family

If you make it to the souther part of the island you must visit LA Guancha. It offers food, drinks and what better feature than the sea. It is free to park and access. Plenty of picnic tables and space for you to set up with your family. Young kids can splash in the water or play at the playground. Adults and teens can do a nice walk/hike on the shore. There’s is a police station right there so you feel safe with the police presence.
Did I say it is free.

A reminder of how vulnerable we all are to Mother Nature. La Guancha is a favorite stop for the Ponce locals.

Aug 2021 • Couples

La Guancha reminds us all that Mother Nature dictates the course of history. Once a thriving tourist attraction centered around a beautiful boardwalk and businesses it now stands desolate and just a quiet reminder of what it once was. I gave it 5 stars because I’d still like to see tourist come out and see for themselves the pride and love of these wonderful people as you walk through and support the local food Kiosk that remain where once thousands of people gathered. The views are spectacular still and the locals friendly and warm. If you want to experience local business and tourism in Ponce be sure to make la Guancha a try.

Kiosks at La Guancha are open!

Aug 2021 • Family

La Guancha was open on the Saturday afternoon that we went. Because the boardwalk is still closed (due to hurricane damage, maybe???), the kiosks have moved next to the park and also at the dead end where the restaurant is. Most of the kiosks are selling drinks (I got a Big Gulp of mojito, unintentionally, ooops! I didn’t complain lol), and some good empanadas of shrimp and beef. At the kiosks toward the dead end, we got some pinchos and absolutely delicious shrimp ceviche (at El Patio), a good mango frappe, and some more yummy freshly fried empanadas at Pleasures of the Sea (I wish I had saved some room to try the stuffed tostones and mofongo at Pleasures of the Sea). It was really hot, but it was lively and fun. Definitely a popular local family hangout.

La Guancha ghost town status

Jun 2021

La Guancha use to be a fun place to visit but unfortunately it is fenced out. Not worth visiting. The place is eroding away, there use to be caring in the past to maintain the place.

Everything Is Still Closed

Apr 2021 • Family

As of April, 2021, the boardwalk is totally closed. A nice, quaint park, but not worth the trip. Keep checking back, as I am sure it was great (and will be again).

Everything was closed

Oct 2020 • Family

We tried visiting on a Tuesday afternoon but everything was closed and deserted, not sure if it is due to all the covid restrictions. There were metal fences surrounding the entrance and you could see a small bronze statue of Hector Lavoe in front of the entrance. The only thing we could observe freely was la fuente del leon (the lion’s fountain) but it wasn’t working either.

History

La Guancha originally consisted of a road and pavement next to a causeway built near the easternmost shore of the Barrio Playa opposite the Ponce Yacht Club. The romantic area is frequented by families and lovers alike, especially on weekends, for relaxation and connection. Under Mayor Cordero’s administration, however, a number of properties worth over $18 million were added to the La Guancha area, transforming it into a new recreational development. [5] The new facilities were designed by engineer Axel Bonilla Cortes. [6]

Services

Seven new facilities added to the existing pedestrian zone: [7]

  • In Dr. Enrique “Coco” Vicens Recreational and Cultural Center (Spanish: Centro Recreativo y Cultural Enrique “Coco” Vicéns ), which consists of an open-air amphitheater for concert spaces and can accommodate about 30,000 spectators. [8] His stage is known as “Tarima Hector Lavoe”. [9]
  • Attractions and attractions dedicated to the celebration of Patron Saint Festivals, fairs and similar celebrations
  • José Ángel Zayas Colón Children’s Park with over 40 games for children, and the Chamorro-Franceschini Brothers Park (Julio and Geraldo ) with facilities for people with disabilities
  • Several parking spaces with parking for 900 cars distributed throughout the complex.
  • A majestic fountain as its main axis, displaying the city coat of arms and its iconic lion
  • Multi-use building with facilities for the Ponce Municipal Police, Ambulance and EMS, and other related agencies
  • A manicured beach area with over 10,000 cubic meters of new sand that replenished and built on the previous beach area, including five beach volleyball courts, gazebos, Caribbean ramps, and associated lighting.

This project complements a $4 million recently opened tourist pier at nearby Port Ponce. [10]

Funding

The complex was developed by the Department of Community and Economic Development of the Autonomous Municipality of Ponce at a cost of $18.6 million. Cost breakdown includes $3.6 million to acquire Paseo Tablado La Guancha, $6.5 million to purchase over 27 acres (110,000 m 2 ) of land, $8.0 million to build a facility, $0.2 million for a tender and $0.3 million for the modernization of PR-12 (Avenida Santiago de los Caballeros) as infrastructure leading to the new complex.
