Por ejemplo, The Sun.[3]

To solve it today, during the ongoing pandemic, media companies from around the world are changing their strategies

At the INMA World News Media Congress, representatives from Newsday (USA), Insider (USA), Funke Mediengruppe (Germany), Sydney Morning Herald and The Age ( Australia) and GFR Media (Puerto Rico) talked about what they are doing to attract readers and make their content truly in demand.

Newsday : from offline to online

Newsday realized that one of the tools to increase audience loyalty could be online events. Thanks to them, you can also find new readers who will stay with the publication for a long time.

Newsday event planner and development team member Melissa Carfero shared what Newsday has accomplished by organizing online events for its subscribers.

“Events have always been part of Newsday’s strategy,” she said. – For many years we have been organizing our own events for our subscribers and their families. You could say it’s our calling card.”

These events were heavily sponsored by advertisers, and therefore, most often, readers could attend them completely free of charge or for a nominal fee. Thus, the publication managed to collect up to 10,000 visitors. By 2018, Newsday began to organize events exclusively for regular readers, thus creating a more “family” gathering.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. This year, Newsday planned to organize several large offline events, but instead they had to develop the concept of online meetings from scratch.

“Because our publication publishes news from Long Island (New York), we primarily focused on providing up-to-date information specifically to the inhabitants of this region. This helped them better navigate the rapidly changing environment,” Carfero said.

If earlier Newsday held no more than one offline event per week, now, thanks to the online format, there can be four or five of them

Journalists of the publication focused on the topic of the impact of covid on business. It is quite logical that online events were also devoted to this topic. First, Newsday launched a series of weekly webinars moderated by a reporter or columnist for the publication. The audience reaction was extremely positive, which inspired the team to continue this story. After that, Newsday decided to focus on online events focused on health, education and entertainment topics.

Carfero noted that during this period they were able to significantly increase the number of events. If earlier they held no more than one offline event per week, now there can be four or five. And “solely thanks to the online format”: “From March 2020 to the first quarter of 2021, we held 155 online events on Newsday Live, which were attended by more than 300,000 people.”

Insider : mobile variety

Insider’s main source of income is subscription. The publication team decided to rebrand their mobile application almost from scratch in order to attract a large audience to their resource. But not only. Taking into account the fact that the number of paid subscribers is very important for the publication, the priority direction for the development of Insider is to retain the audience. According to the chief product manager Alla Novik, the rebranding of the mobile application should also help solve this problem: “Our mobile application has not been optimized. We knew the app was a good way to connect with our followers 24/7 and make Insider a part of their daily lives.”

Insider conducted numerous audience surveys to optimize the app for subscribers. The team spent over ten weeks building prototypes based on user feedback. All surveys and focus groups involved both regular subscribers and completely new readers. Such a wide audience coverage allowed us to test as many models and designs as possible. As a result, a new mobile application Insider appeared.

The total number of installs on Android and iOS grew by 75% in the first month of the new app’s launch

Initially, the company thought of breaking news into topics in their app, but focus groups showed that this innovation would not be effective. Novik noted that they decided to abandon this idea: “No matter what kind of navigation we build into our application, subscribers will still interact with it a little. They are much more comfortable just scrolling down the news feed.

However, they still tried to implement a breakdown by topics of politics and technology in order to somehow separate the news. But users of the application noted that this reduced the variety of content, they could no longer accidentally see interesting news in the feed, since everything was structured. Based on this feedback, the team was able to come up with the following tips for redesigning the app:

simplify navigation and focus on user experience;

mix different types of content in your feed for variety;

Minimize pop-up distractions;

Offer a smooth transition from landing page to content.

The updated Insider mobile app has been running for several months now. According to Novik, during this time the publication has achieved amazing results: “In the first month of the app’s launch alone, the number of installs increased by 75%. In the future, the number of people using the mobile application significantly exceeded the number of users of the publication’s website. It was a useful experience for us, which showed in which direction we should work further.”

Funke Mediengruppe: Live

The pandemic has brought a lot of problems for the news media, but the Funke Media Group has managed to capitalize on it. Marie-Louise Timke, Head of Interactive, shared some of the ideas that have enabled Funke’s publications to expand their audience.

The company constantly adapts information for readers to meet their changing needs. The most popular topic in 2020 was, of course, the pandemic, which is why Funke developed the Coronavirus Monitor, an interactive map that reflects all the latest data on virus outbreaks. The card is available not only in Germany, but also in other countries. With a simple and user-friendly interface, users can customize the search for specific information on the topic of coronavirus. “It functions as a single page that displays the most important information and links to national and regional news about the coronavirus,” Timke explained.

In 2020, the Funke media group developed and posted on the websites of its publications an interactive map Coronavirus Monitor

During the pandemic, the Coronavirus Monitor has become the leading source of information about covid for the people of Germany. The map has been designed to ensure that information can be updated in real time, almost immediately after the appearance of relevant news on the publication’s website. Surprisingly, the development team was able to create it in just a week. After the launch, various features were added to it to ensure the speed of providing information.

“We’ve been working to reduce the amount of unclaimed content,” said Eime Rigas, Audience Leader at The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. “The main thing for us was to develop the quality of the content so that even the most limited content was truly in demand.”

The team did a great job of creating a new content and marketing strategy, in which almost all employees of the publications were involved.

“When we were working on redesigning the approach to releasing content, it took a lot of editors a long time to rebuild. And then we realized that for the success of this process, it is necessary to make it easy and natural,” said Rigas.

So, one of the editors of the sports department suggested an idea to change the interface of the informational editorial panel. Now all content is much more streamlined and journalists are not overwhelmed with data.

It worked great: the lifestyle team published 50% more articles compared to last year, and the ranking of articles with even the smallest coverage increased by almost 40 times.

According to Rigas, the data displayed on the editorial information panel is incredibly useful: “First of all, it is to help journalists prepare content. They are intended to help the editorial team implement their content strategy. But it is very important to understand that they should not unconditionally determine the strategy.

GFR Media : overheard on the net

GFR Media is a leading media company in Puerto Rico that has two publications, Primera Hora and El Nuevo Dia. Both of these publications now want to rejuvenate their audiences, diversify their traffic sources, as well as maintain the same branding across all platforms and increase audience engagement. To do this, the company has decided to rethink its social media strategy, said Selimar Colón, director of strategic planning at GFR Media.

The company did not try to create something new, they were improving the platforms they already had. And they thought about what innovations they could introduce into existing workflows. Colon called it “simplistic production”.

For example, the GFR analytics dashboard for Instagram captures views of one’s own accounts, shows all new followers, profile reach, and the total number of posts saved by users. It also shows the percentage of all media formats such as images, videos or carousels.
