Cons

This hotel was impacted by Hurricane Maria in September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. The 30-year-old Palmas Del Mar is the largest resort community in Puerto Rico, with nearly 3,000 acres and a dizzying number of housing complexes for both residents and vacationers. Oceano, a management company, rents 72 of these condos and villas, which have from one to seven bedrooms. Since each unit is separately owned, decor and layouts will vary, but all have full kitchens, outdoor space, and laundry facilities. Staff are on hand from the home-base near the main gate (security is a priority) so guests can reach out for any maintenance issues or assistance. Most amenities come with an additional fee — like day passes to the Beach Club — but each complex has an outdoor pool that is free of charge. Overall, this vacation spot is best suited for families, retreat groups, and golf lovers — or anyone who does not mind missing out on culture or nightlife.

Scene

A pretty (if predictable) gated resort community for all ages

Guests arriving to Palmas Del Mar will enter through the main gate and speak to a guard for directions to the Oceano office. This is a standalone building on a hill close to the entrance that acts as the nerve-center for all 72 units that the company manages vacation rentals for, which are located in various condo neighborhoods around the sprawling property. Oceano’s office is more than just a front desk — this attractive building with indoor and outdoor seating areas is also the place for reliable Wi-Fi.

Once keys and directions to the unit are handed over (pay attention to directions as it is easy to get lost) guests get back in their cars and wind past manicured grounds and golf courses. Between the full-time residents (there is a school on property), employees, and those on vacation, these roads are quite active, but once settled into the unit, guests can expect to find more peace and quiet.

Since all units have kitchens, guests tend to stock up at a grocery store in Humacao before arrival. Once here, guests can spend their days golfing, playing tennis, and hitting one of the outdoor pools. Security is a major presence and guests should feel completely safe walking, jogging, or biking the grounds any time of day or night.

While certain areas of the property — such as the marina with bobbing yachts and the expansive villa sections — have a whiff of luxury, the quality does vary quite a bit in the actual units, and some are showing their age. The resort is in fact 30 years old, and is working hard to stay fresh for a new generation. There are a few restaurants on-site and the Wyndham Hotel has a romantic wine bar. Other than this, and the small casino, there is little in the way of nightlife.

Location

On the southeast coast of Puerto Rico with views of Vieques

The 2,750-acre property is Puerto Rico’s largest resort in the town of Humacao along the southeast coast. Most guests will arrive by rental car from San Juan airport, about an hour away. The resort complex is gated with 24-hour security and is a veritable bubble of protection from the outside world — appealing to those who want an easy vacation for all ages. There are several condo complexes right on the water with spectacular ocean views, while others are removed with garden or pool views only. While the ocean is pretty to look at — especially on a clear day when one can see the island of Vieques in the distance — this particular area of beach has choppy waves and it is not the best place for swimming. Most guests and residents use the multiple pools. For a beach excursion, however, guests can hit the beaches outside of the gates in Humacao, such as El Morrillo, Punta Santiago, Buena Vista, and Punta Candelero. Humacao also has multiple grocery store options within a 10-minute drive for stocking the fridge. There is a store on property but prices are typically higher.

Rooms

Condo units are the most common, but there are some villas for larger groups

Oceano manages vacation rentals for 72 condos and villas around the resort ranging from studios to seven-bedroom units. They are found in the following complexes: Crescent Beach, Palmas Dorados, Marbella Club, Maralogo, Crescent Cove, and Beach Village. Villas are located in separate section closer to the marina.

Since the owners decorate according to their own taste, it is hard to list consistencies, but each unit is fully furnished with a kitchen, living, and dining area. All have either a balcony or patio, as well as laundry facilities. Most units have outdoor grills and tables for al fresco dining. Each condo complex has an outdoor pool, and villas each have a private outdoor pool. These units are best suited for groups. For instance, the Harbour Lights (photographed here) sleeps up to 14 people.

Features

A range of activities on-site, though expect to pay extra fees

This resort community has easy driving access to the real world (and town of Humacao), but for those who want to stay on-site, there is plenty to do. Many of these activities come with a fee, however.

There are two championship 18-hole golf courses that are visible from several areas of the property. Another popular feature is the Tennis Club, which has 20 courts (two artificial grass, 14 hard, and four Har-Tru clay) and a pro shop. The courts can be lit for evening play, and private lessons and clinics are offered. The fitness center is located on the second floor of the facility with treadmills, cardio machines and weights. It also offers group exercise classes from Monday to Saturday, including Pilates and water aerobics. Access to all of the above requires a fee.

The Beach Club is available to guests and Oceano staff can arrange day passes for a daily fee. There’s a large adult pool here with drink service, lounge areas, and reserved areas for lap swimming. Kids will have access to a water slides and wading pools in their own pool, and children’s activities are included in the package.

Restaurants on-site include the grill at the Beach Club operated by the Wyndham team. This hotel (the only hotel on the property) has a few restaurants and bars that are open to the public including a new wine bar. There is another restaurant, Café de la Plaza, near the marina, and a bar and grill at the tennis center.

In-room spa treatments and outside excursions can be arranged through the front desk. Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby.

    Tazacorte

On the west coast of the green island (as the locals call La Palma), one of the main resort areas is Tazacorte. It has everything for a great holiday: an equipped beach, a lot of cafes where you can try local cuisine (which the island is famous for), shops to bring gifts and souvenirs. Lovers of attractions will also find entertainment.

    Puerto Calero

If you want peace and quiet on vacation, Puerto Calero will provide it to the fullest. However, for such a pleasure you will have to pay a price above the average – the resort belongs to the prestigious, elite holiday destinations.

    Santa Cruz de la Palma

The resort town of Santa Cruz de la Palma is considered one of the most beautiful in the Canaries. It attracts with a harmonious combination of modernity and history. The capital of the island, La Palma, is a picturesque corner of Spain that leaves no one indifferent. Having been here once, you will want to come back again.

    Playa Blanca

The Canary Islands have long been among tourists and not only popular. Not in vain, many people have the question: “where would you like to relax?” the answer would be “in the Canaries”. Lanzarote is one of the islands of the archipelago. So if the dream is the Canary Islands, then welcome to one of the resorts of Lanzarote – Playa Blanca.

    Puerto Naos

The island of La Palma is called by the locals very simply “Beautiful Island”. And he fully justifies this name. The resorts of the island are stunning with magnificent landscapes. The small village of Puerto Naos, which is the largest resort on the island, is no exception.

    Costa Teguise

There is probably no better resort for outdoor activities than Costa Teguise in Lanzarote. Here everything is conducive to this: the features of the natural landscape, the weather, and the developed infrastructure. And palaces, monasteries and other buildings preserved from the Middle Ages will make your stay here at least interesting.

    Arenal

Arenal is a small Majorcan resort, widely popular among German youth. The development of the resort began in the 60s of the 20th century. and since then little has changed in his appearance. The same old city hotels, the same bars and cafes with dubious fast food, the complete lack of infrastructure for children are more suitable for those who are in the mood for a vacation with a fun nightlife, and not for a quiet family vacation. If your goal is to “break away” on vacation and you are not picky about details, then choose the Arenal resort. But if you value quiet at night, decency and child-friendliness, you might be better off looking for other resorts in more suitable locations.

    Alcudia

The ancient town of Alcudia in Mallorca is a modern tourist resort suitable for a relaxing holiday with the family. The kids will enjoy the clean and shallow beach, the water park, and parents will appreciate the decent atmosphere of the city and historical sights. The town itself cannot be called quiet due to the large number of tourists who come to see it. The streets can often be crowded with tourists of different nationalities.

    Magaluf

Magaluf or the Ibiza branch of Mallorca is a youth resort popular with its party life. Young British, Scandinavians and, more recently, Russians come here to “break away” and hang out. If you have a big company, thirsty for night parties, or you decide to celebrate a bachelor party unforgettably, then you are definitely here.

    Ciutadella

The second largest city in Menorca, Ciutadella was once the capital of the island. With the beginning of British rule in the 18th century. The capital was moved to Mahon. The old town is interesting for its cute medieval streets and buildings in the Baroque and Gothic styles, Renaissance palaces and aristocratic atmosphere. It is also the most “festive” city in which most of the fiestas and festivities are held.

    Mahon

Mahon, the capital of the island of Menorca, is famous for its huge and at the same time picturesque natural port. Lovely houses are spread out on a rock, which offers a bewitching view of the bay, a real treasure of the island.

    Playa d’en Bossa

Playa d’en Bossa is a lively resort in Spain, which is one of the main epicenters of nightlife on the island of Ibiza. Mostly young people rest here, so the resort has a lot of various entertainments, including the possibility of practicing active sports.

    San Antonio

It’s time for vacations and beach holidays. The dream of young people in such a period of time is, without a doubt, Ibiza, with its unstoppable drive of night parties, beautiful sunsets and warm south seas. Ibiza is divided into several areas, each of which has a certain type of tourist features. Today, the subject of our small study will be San Antonio.

    Ibiza

Ibiza is a piece of paradise on Earth, it is not without reason that this resort attracts the attention of tourists from all over the world. Today this resort is known for its chic youth parties and beautiful, as if pristine beaches of the Mediterranean.

    Santa Eulalia del Rio

Santa Eulalia del Rio is the third largest resort in Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands, which belongs to Spain. The local resorts are diverse.

    Port de San Miguel

Many people think that you can only spend a lot of money on holidays in Ibiza. However, the resort of Port de San Miguel proves otherwise. There are several inexpensive hotels here, and several attractions that will be of interest to both children and adults. So, what is the history of the resort of Port de San Miguel, and where you can relax here.

    Talamanca

The magnificent horseshoe-shaped beach of the Spanish resort of Talamanca in the cozy bay of the Cala Talamanca island of Ibiza hospitably welcomes tourists from different countries of Europe and all over the world all year round.

    Morro Jable

More sedate than its northern competitor Corralejo, the resort of Morro Jable, perhaps, can even be called almost German – in the local bars, shops and hotels, along with Spanish, German is also spoken, and most of the vacationers come from from Germany. There is only one attraction here, but it is precisely for the sake of it that tens of thousands of tourists strive to get here every year – this is its picturesque beach, in which the sandy coast and the rocky coast are organically combined.

    Playa Matorral

Fuerteventura is undoubtedly one of the most heavenly islands of all the Canary Islands combined. And Playa Matorral among its resorts, perhaps, deserves the title of one of the best. Why? Perhaps the most delicate sand of the beach plays a role in this, walking on which is simply an incredible pleasure? Or maybe the reason for this special charm radiated by the place is the wonderful sunsets that you are witnessing here? One way or another, Playa Matorral is definitely impressive.

    Costa Calma

Here the sea seems to be brighter and more colorful, and nature is unexpectedly green, juicy and lush, which is so unlike this Canarian island. This is how the small town of Costa Calma, located in the southeast of Fuerteventura, where the Jandia peninsula begins, greets its guests effectively.

    El Cotillo

This tiny town in the northwest of Fuerteventura is no different from the nearby resorts of the Canary Island – so, a quiet fishing village located around a small harbor. However, in recent years, El Cotillo is gaining more and more popularity among surfers and those who like to relax among untouched nature and watch the sunset.

    Caleta de Fuste

This town is considered the third largest in Fuerteventura. However, this does not detract from the dignity of Caleta de Fuste – it can rightfully be called one of the main resorts of the island.

    Corralejo

Dozens of charters arrive daily from England, Germany and other European countries to this windswept island. It is called Fuerteventura (translated from Spanish “fuerte” – strong, “el viento” – wind). However, despite the wind, although not strong, but blowing constantly, those who have been here at least once prefer this cute provincial town of Corralejo to other resorts of the Canary Islands.

    Playa del Inglés

The city of Playa del Inglés is considered to be one of the most youthful and most “party” resorts in the Canary Islands: the moderate cost of nightclubs and hotels, the relatively low prices in shops and restaurants attract young people of different interests and different orientations.

    Puerto Rico

Once upon a time it was believed that this place at the mouth of the Gran Canaria valley is the sunniest, the brightest. This is how the popular family beach of Puerto Rico appeared on the south coast of the island.

    Puerto de Mogán

Bright white two-story houses with multi-colored window casings that effectively stand out against their background, many palm trees and colorful flowers growing right on the streets, numerous (and I must say, very excellent) restaurants and bars, and – impregnable cliffs surrounding all this picturesque beauty. And also – tunnels similar to canals that connected the harbor and the fishing port: for these tunnels, the inhabitants of the island called the town “Canarian Venice”. You will see all this if you decide to relax in the resort of Puerto de Mogan, the westernmost town of the Costa Mogan, on the southern coast of Gran Canaria.

    Maspalomas

Maspalomas is a 17 km Spanish resort. along the coastline on the island of Gran Canaria (one of the Canary Islands). The total area is about 2000 hectares. Considered one of the most popular holiday destinations among Europeans, it is famous for its luxurious hotels and villas, rich flora and fauna, and breathtaking landscapes. The Maspalpomas tourist area unites several resorts: Baia Feliz, Playa del Aguila, Playa del Inglés, San Augustin, Meloneras and Campo International.

    San Agustin

The world-famous Spanish resort of San Agustin is located on the island of Gran Canaria, which is part of the Canary Islands. The resort is located in its southern part, close to the noisy resort areas of Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas, where the resort and entertainment infrastructure is better developed, there are many restaurants, bars with discos, shops and various entertainment centers. In San Agustin there are also shops, restaurants and bars, but, nevertheless, it attracts more attention to tourists and vacationers who want a calm and quiet holiday, there are all conditions for families with children.

    Santa Susanna

In a beautiful location, surrounded by forests, there is another resort of the Costa del Maresme – Santa Susanna. Its streets are spread over seven hills, so from almost every corner of the city there are amazing views of the surroundings. The resort of Santa Susanna itself is unusually green – there are several parks here (Mirador, Colomer, Riera), outlandish trees grow around, tropical flowers of unprecedented beauty bloom. In addition, many seek to get to Santa Susanna also because of the healing mineral and thermal springs.

    La Pineda

In a picturesque place near Tarragona, a small pretty town is located, surrounded by bright plains, rocky bays, cozy lagoons and pine parks, which gave it its name. Its promenade is the longest in all of Catalonia, and the resort itself is considered the second most visited after Salou.

    Beach:

    sandy

    Oropesa del Mar

It would seem – a typical Mediterranean town, which are many on this coast.
