San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Caribbean climate happily lends itself to outdoor activities—miles of beaches, the open-air museum that is Old San Juan, and the street art of Santurce, to name but a few. However, pandemic times and reduced capacity inside restaurants exposed the dearth of al fresco dining options across the capital’s metro area. And because zoning regulations discourage street sheds and beachfront tables, some savvy restaurateurs sought creative ways to embrace the outdoors.

Their clever solution: why not enjoy food, drink, and San Juan’s sights from a bird’s-eye view? These recently-opened rooftops, each overlooking some of the best scenes of San Juan, are now some of the capital’s most coveted reservations overall. Here are the best rooftop restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which have become hot spots for savvy visitors and locals alike.

Cool rooftops are the signature of the O:live Collection of hotels. Cascading waters, breathtaking design, and lagoon views are the draw of Condado’s O:live Boutique Hotel and O:LV Fifty Five. But their newest property, Isla Verde’s Aire de O:live, stands apart for two reasons: stunning beach views and fine Japanese-inspired cuisine from chef José Miguel Meléndez of local favorite Yoko. Kumo, which means “cloud” in Japanese, was the first piece of the hotel to open in December 2021. 

Overlooking a wide swath of sand, the restaurant provides one of the island’s most picturesque perches to enjoy dishes such as crispy sushi rice wrapped with tuna, brushed with eel sauce and topped with foie gras. Cocktails, such as the origami—aged rum, mezcal, allspice, falernum and orange bitters—are equally complex and alluring. It’s a perfect partnership, as well as a full-circle moment for O:live founders (and spouses) Loisse Herger and Fernando Davila, who coincidentally went on their first date on the very same rooftop during its previous incarnation 15 years ago. About 20 of the 80 hotel rooms will be refurbished and ready for occupancy by summer 2022, while the remainder of the hotel will open in 2023; Kumo, in the meantime, can be enjoyed seven days a week.

Telling the host at Casita Miramar that you have a reservation at Cuarto 16 feels like uttering a secret password. They will mumble into a headset, then lead you up a stairwell where the conventional trappings of the hacienda-like restaurant give way to a clandestine warren of rooms, open kitchens, bars, and ultimately a tranquil garden terrace above one of San Juan’s busiest enclaves. Planters of herbs, pots full of flowers, cascading vines and swaying palms cause diners to feel far removed from the city. And while the speakeasy addition might welcome guests in the same manner as its downstairs sibling—with a complimentary root vegetable soup and giant discs of bacalao fritters—the rest of the menu diverges from the traditional Puerto Rican offerings of Casita Miramar.
