Indiaas eten bij Taste of India in Puerto Rico

Vakantie

Beoordeling Taste of India in Puerto Rico

coffee, I love you, but I know almost nothing about you. Part 5. “Coffee belt”

A coffee tree can grow successfully and produce beans of sufficient quality only in a certain tropical climate. Of course, theoretically, coffee can be grown in your own country house, but for this you will have to purchase expensive agricultural equipment and special soil, try to reproduce suitable conditions, and as a result, get the most terrible coffee on the entire globe. Because good beans grow exclusively in the countries of the “coffee belt”, and the best – only in some of them. nine0003

Which countries are in the coffee belt?

If you look at the map, it becomes immediately clear how the term “coffee belt” appeared. The “coffee belt” includes coffee-producing countries located along the equator. It was there that nature created the best conditions for the growth of coffee trees.

The coffee belt includes the countries of Africa, Asia and Oceania, Central and South America. Not all countries in these regions were lucky enough to get ideal conditions for growing coffee, but only a few, for example:

  • Africa – Kenya, Tanzania, Yemen, Ethiopia, etc.
  • Asia – India, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.
  • Central America – Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc.
  • South America – Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru.

Where did it all start? In Yemen

It is believed that it was from Yemen that coffee began its distribution around the world (it was secretly brought there from Ethiopia). Until the end of the 17th century, Yemen was the only supplier of coffee to Europe. Sacks of coffee beans were sent from the port of Mocha by ship to European countries (hence the name “mocha”). A little later, the Dutch mixed Yemeni coffee beans with beans growing on the island of Java, and created the first coffee blend – Java Mocha .

Caribbean cuisine – Bonduelle

Caribbean roots

The cuisine of the inhabitants of the Caribbean islands is extremely rich and varied. This comes largely from the history of these islands, as well as the influence of peoples coming from different continents, and therefore diverse culinary traditions. For a long time the West Indies was a colony of the Spaniards, Portuguese, English, Dutch and French. The descendants of the inhabitants of Africa, who were brought here as slaves, also had a significant influence on culinary traditions. Thus, a mixture of cuisines of many nations, not only Europe, but also Africa, as well as the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean islands, which is known to us as Caribbean cuisine, was obtained. nine0003

Sauces

The word “sauce” comes from the Latin word “salsus” which means salty and seasoned. In ancient times, sauces were used to preserve food, and now their main task is to diversify and improve the smell and taste of dishes. West Indians add sauces to meat, fish and seafood, grilled or fried. Some sauces are used first as a marinade (marinating meat and fish is an essential step in preparing Caribbean food), and later they are poured over the finished dish. Very popular thick sauces are Dips. They are prepared on the basis of sour cream, mayonnaise or yogurt. Spicy and fragrant chutneys are also recognized. They are prepared from seasonal vegetables and fruits, as well as seasonings, mustard and vinegar. Caribbean sauces use a variety of seasonings that are used in a variety of ways in the most unexpected blends. nine0051 Common to the sauces of Caribbean cuisine is the combination of sweet fruit flavors with spicy spices and onions, as well as the use of coconut milk, rum and the world’s most savory additives.

Vegetable triumvirate

The main vegetables traditionally grown in this region are tomatoes, garlic and onions. We will hardly find dishes that do not use these vegetables, even if it would seem that their presence is absurd, like bananas with mango and onions. Tomatoes are most often added to soups and sauces, giving them a wonderful color and taste. They are served with chicken meat seasoned with onion, garlic and chili. Tomatoes are also part of the okra dish. nine0003

Beans are the basis

Beans are the main vegetable in the Caribbean. It is valued not only because of its taste, it is also beneficial for health, since beans contain a lot of protein. In addition, it is very convenient to store. The Caribbean climate is especially conducive to the cultivation of beans, so the variety of beans is the basis for a wide range of local dishes. It was from here that the beans were brought to Europe, and then also to other continents.

Fish and seafood – for the poor and the rich

The West Indies are islands, so it’s not surprising that one of the main components used in the cuisine of this region is fish and seafood. Here they are available to everyone. Fish and seafood, which in many countries of the world are considered scarce, accessible only to non-poor people, are present on the tables in every home in the West Indies. Here you can find many types of marine animals, including flying fish, squid, mussels, cod, sea bass, crabs, shrimp, and many other seafood. nine0003

Rum and Cocktails

The West Indies are world famous for their excellent cocktails. They are based on rum, Curacao or bitter Angostura. The following are the most famous drinks originating from the West Indies:

– Cuba Libre

– Daiquiri

– Havana Special

– Mojito

– Pina Colada

The Caribbean is the birthplace of rum. Almost every island has its own recipe for making this alcoholic drink. Cuba and Puerto Rico produce a light colorless or amber rum. Rum from Haiti has a vanilla aroma, while in Jamaica it is a heavy and strong drink. Rum is the basis of many liqueurs and exotic cocktails.
