USPS adds 200 postal workers to work backlogged mail in Puerto Rico

With Two Shipping Containers Of USVI Mail Stuck In Puerto Rico, Postal Service Will Ship Mail Directly To Territory From Mainland

The U.S. Postal Service will start shipping mail to the territory directly from the U.S. mainland instead of the regular Puerto Rico route, following lobbying from local leaders as thousands of mail headed to the territory have been stuck in Puerto Rico.

“We have contacted the White House, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the USPS to identify short and long-term solutions,” said Governor Kenneth Mapp in a release issued Thursday. Mr. Mapp explained that at least two shipping containers of mail have been delayed in Puerto Rico. Read more

Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, a member of the House Government and Reform Committee, released the following statement after meeting with Deputy Postmaster Ronald A. Stroman regarding postal service delays in the U.S. Virgin Islands:

“Today I met with Ronald A. Stroman, Deputy Postmaster General for the United States Post Office. I was informed by the Deputy Postmaster General that the Postal Service added 200 temporary workers in Puerto Rico to sort backlogged mail and daily flights are continuing to move the mail.

“I have received the commitment of the US Postal Service through Deputy Postmaster General Stroman that within the week mail for the Virgin Islands will be sorted and routed through Miami instead of Puerto Rico in order to address the problems expressed by the residents of the Virgin Islands. The United States Postal Service will be using a commercial carrier to route mail for the residents of the Virgin Islands in order to ensure timely delivery.

“The Deputy Postmaster General has acknowledged that it is important for him to be in the Virgin Islands to assess firsthand the damages to our postal facilities in order for him to understand the concerns of the residents of the Virgin Islands. He has accepted the invitation from my office to make a visit to the territories in short order to understand and see for himself the concerns I and the people of the Virgin Islands have concerning our longstanding issues with the mail service. I look forward to his visit to the Territories and working with him to alleviate our problems with our mail service.”

Puerto Rico is the USA? A Few Facts about the Ruined Island

President Donald Trump stated the day before that Puerto Rico is in “big trouble” , facing widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Maria .

Trump pointed to the island’s outdated electrical grid infrastructure and Puerto Rico’s massive debt, which would cost billions of dollars to rebuild.

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/9″Food, water and medical assistance must be a priority and Puerto Rico gets it all in full,” ,” Trump tweeted.

According to The Washington Post , Trump’s tweet came just after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi urged the Pentagon to send more people to help Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands so that residents know: “the US government will do whatever is necessary for them without question or hesitation” .

About 3.4 million Puerto Ricans were left without electricity. It will take months to recover, authorities say. Satellite photos show the island on July 24 and September 25.

— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) September 26, 2017

As a reminder, federal emergency aid resources are already torn between helping those affected by three of the strongest hurricanes that hit the US territories at once: Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Many note that responses to the call for help from Puerto Rico were not as massive as for Florida or Texas .

Perhaps this is because, according to a Suffolk University/USA Today poll in March, most Americans don’t understand that Puerto Ricans. ..are also Americans.
Here are some answers to some questions about the island

Are Puerto Ricans American citizens?

Yes. Under Section 302 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, people born in Puerto Rico have the same birth rights as natives of the 50 states.

Do they vote in elections?

You may think so, given that they are American citizens, but…. No.

Puerto Ricans cannot vote in the general presidential election, but they do have the right to vote in the primaries, the process of nominating candidates for the presidency of the country.

What is the exact name of Puerto Rico’s status?

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth unincorporated organized territory of the United States.

In practice, this is quite difficult. For example, most Puerto Ricans do not pay federal income taxes, but they do pay social security, health care, import and export taxes. Some articles of the Constitution apply in Puerto Rico, some do not, and even experts are not always sure which ones.

Why is Puerto Rico still not the 51st state?

Puerto Rico has had a longstanding movement to become the next state. Five referendums have been held on this issue over the years. In the last one, which took place in June with a very low turnout, 97 percent of the votes cast were in favor of joining the US.

However, Congress will have to decide on this, and it is not known when this will happen.

Island Governor Ricardo Rosselo stressed Puerto Rico’s US identity yesterday when he asked for federal aid.

“The island is on the brink of a humanitarian crisis,” he told . “To avoid this, we must recognize that we, Puerto Ricans, are the same American citizens. When we talk about disaster, everyone should be treated equally” .
