Vaca brava puerto rico: Vaca Brava – Old San Juan

Vaca Brava, Lunch in Old San Juan

The day we visited the HMS Bounty, we finished by going to lunch at Vaca Brava.

Here’s a link to the
HMS Bounty post.

I had heard friends rave about the Vaca Brava restaurant in  Barranquitas so when they opened a second one in Old San Juan, we had to check it out.

Vaca Brava is easy to find.

It’s located on Calle Recinto Sur, directly across the street from the old U.S. Post Office. They are in the space where the Hard Rock Cafe used to be.  Vaca Brava is about 3 blocks from the docks.  There’s a full size fiberglass bull standing by the front door.

Please note that these first 2 shots are from the same vantage point.

Ironically, ‘Vaca’ is a cow and not a bull.

The Restaurant- It’s a large space at 13,500 square feet.  Remodeling set them back $300,000.  As with most structures in Old San Juan, it is not very handicap capable.

I especially like the sepia-toned black and white photo collage of cows, running up the wall in the main room.  Rather eccentric.

The prices are typical for the tourist district of Old San Juan.

Not bad, but not cheap, either.  If you want to try something truly Puerto Rican, this IS the place to hit.  They have daily specials that are posted on a board out on the sidewalk, but no mention of them in the menu.  I would suggest asking your waiter about the specials, if that seemed appealing.

The atmosphere is light and cozy.  A true family vibe.

I liked it.  We chose a spot on the ground floor in the open, but there was even more seating on the gallery above.  The mission style architecture is very inviting.

Vaca Brava has a reputation for huge servings and from what I could see, it’s true.  Me First Mate and I usually split a plate… that would work well here.  Unfortunately, the menu has many more ‘dinners for 2’, but at twice the price.   I suspect ‘doggy bags’ are very popular.

I ordered the house burger with fries.

At $10 bucks it was a bargain.  It came on a split roll with both ‘blanco’ and cheddar cheese and grilled red onions… as well as all the ‘fix’ns’.  The patty was more like chopped flank steak than conventional hamburger.  It was fantastic!  By the time I finished it, I was full.  I highly recommend it.  Oh, if you want Mayo for your burger or catsup for your fries, ask.

Everyone spoke English so no language issues.

Me First Mate ordered an appetizer of Alcapurria.  A dish usually made of mashed Yautia and ground pork, then deep fried.  This version used Platano instead of Yautia.  It came with a mild dipping sauce.  I liked it, but me First Mate said it was not traditional Alcapurria.

Service was polite, but it took 15 minutes to place our order and 45 minutes to get it.  Another table of 6 teens showed up after us, ordered and received their food before we got ours.   As long as you are not in a hurry, this is a great place.  You ARE on vacation, right?  We did not order the daily special so I don’t know if that would have made a difference.

I can say it was worth the wait!  The issues were minor so I still think the experience rates 5 skulls.

Since I ran out of room for images on the Bounty post, I’ve included a couple of extra shots here.

The shuttle ferry terminal is easy to spot.

Look for the big ‘AcuaExpress 2’ sign.  If you want to check out the free Bacardi tour (includes 2 free drinks), this is where you have to go.

There are vans at the terminal in Cataño that will take you to the Bacardi Campus and back for a small price.  It’s worth the trip, I’ve done it 3 times now.. here’s a link.

Trolley Stop 14 is located out front of the Pier 2.  The trolley will take you all the way to Fort San Cristobal, El Morro and back to the docks.   There are many more stops along the way.

The Don Q, Serralles show room is directly across the street from Pier 2.  This is the most popular rum in Puerto Rico.  A premium rum.  Their showroom is open to the public.  Don Quixote is their ‘patron saint’ of sorts.  It’s worth a stop to check out.

More about Don Q rum in a future post.  ARRG!

As always- Larger versions of some of these shots can be seen over on me dedicated Facebook page.  I could always use a few more ‘Likes’.

Thanx- S. Dog

Playa de las Burras

Playa de las Burras is located next to Playa del Ingles.

To the east of Playa de las Burras, you will find the sand dunes of Maspalomas.

Next to the dunes there is a naturist gathering area and another special area, near Bar 7, which is popular with homosexuals.

Playa de Maspalomas

This is just a beautiful place. You have to see it with your own eyes to believe it exists!

Wind-sculpted sand dune sculptures of fine white sand in front of the blue sea. This is indeed an amazing sight.

Maspalomas beach is divided into four zones: the first is great for families and children, the second and fourth are for nudists, and the third is popular among homosexuals.

Sports and entertainment facilities are available here, including showers and a variety of beach bars, restaurants and shops.

Buses drop off passengers next to the dunes. Nearby there are many places where you can park your car for free right on the street, as well as special parking lots.

This is one of the most popular beaches in Gran Canaria.

Playa de Puerto Rico

The beach is famous for being the sunniest place in Gran Canaria.

There is always a light breeze blowing here and the sea is calm – ideal conditions for taking a dip in the warm waters of the Atlantic.

Numerous bars and cafes are open along the beach. There is convenient parking, sunbeds, awnings and a number of showers are always at your service.

The beach is wheelchair accessible. There are inexpensive buses from all major tourist spots.

Address: Mogán, Gran Canaria

Playa de Amadores

The beach is located on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria.

On the shore of a large bay, perfectly protected from the elements, there is an 800-meter strip of golden sand, which is washed by crystal clear waters.

This calm and quiet place has become a favorite for those who would like to be together in a romantic setting and spend a day in the sun. It is not surprising, therefore, that the very name Playa de Amadores means in Spanish “Lovers’ Beach”.

There is a large selection of bars and restaurants.

Recommended Playa de Amadores is a great place to watch the sun go down behind the volcanic peak of Teide on the neighboring island of Tenerife. This sunset is a truly breathtaking sight.

Address: Puerto Rico, Dunas Amadores, 35130MOGAN

Plai-de Mogan

This is an excellent, well-protected beast, which is a well-being from the Weightless Sand. is popular with family vacationers.

The clear waters are calm and the sea around the breakwater is a great spot for snorkeling as there are a wide variety of fish.

The beach offers sun loungers, awnings, pedal boats and canoes for rent. The kiosks sell chilled drinks and snacks.

Parking places are located along the road, and in addition, there is a parking lot next to the beach. Buses run frequently and there is a taxi rank.

Playa de Mogan is one of the best beaches in Spain.

Playa Taurito

A beach between Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogan on the south coast of Gran Canaria.

Soft sand and sparkling water – that’s what you’ll find on the picturesque beach. A wonderful opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the intimate atmosphere of an oasis of peace and tranquility.

Near the beach there are a number of cafes, restaurants, shops and snack bars.

A wide range of water sports and activities are available, including fishing, jet skiing, scuba diving, as well as boat trips and walks.

Buses run to Playa Taurito from many places on the island. At the beach there is a large underground parking and a taxi rank.

Playa de Meloneras

Beautiful beach located in the south of Gran Canaria. The water here is warm and calm, great for swimming. The sand underfoot is golden and soft.

Near the beach there are a number of restaurants, bars and cafes offering cold drinks, snacks and international cuisine to choose from. Among others, a fine Spanish restaurant stands out here, famous for its paellas.

Buses are frequent, there are several car parks. There are good conditions for disabled access.

Playa de Guigui

The most beautiful “wild” beach of the island of Gran Canaria.

Fine sandy, golden yellow, it stretches for hundreds of meters in length and tens of meters in width. The water is crystal clear, turquoise. Brown-red rocks contrast with green algae. This paradise is located at the exit to the coast of two mountain gorges. You can get here only through the mountains or by sea; the journey on foot is tiring and dangerous. Delivery by water will be expensive, in addition, you will have to swim to the shore. Of course, the place is worth the sacrifice. The main thing is not to forget about sun protection, the beach is “wild”, and there is nowhere to hide from the scorching rays.

A marked mountain trail to the beach starts about 1 km from the village of Tasartico on the west coast. You will need sports shoes, drinking water and 5 hours of free time.

Address: Tasartico, La Aldeade San Nicolás, LacPalmas

All the beaches of Gran Canaria will delight you with a beautiful coastline and good infrastructure. Have a nice holiday!

News

The public movement “For the reunification of Puerto Rico with Spain” (Movimiento de Reunificación de Puerto Rico con España – MRE) is going to open its local offices in the territory of the Iberian kingdom.

“Once upon a time, our island was Spanish territory,” said the leader of the movement, José Nieves Seise, in an interview with EFE. “Now we want the freely associated state of Puerto Rico to become part of Spain again. On the rights of autonomy. And this idea, we believe, must be promoted not only in our country, but among the citizens of the one with which we want to reunite: the Spaniards must know whom they can join.

“We are well aware that there is opposition in Puerto Rico,” said Nieves Seise. – Of course, there can be no complete unanimity, someone has their own interests that do not coincide with ours. And yet it makes sense to fight for the implementation of our idea.”

The

MRE, according to its leader, already has over a hundred supporters living in Spain. With their help, Puerto Ricans expect to quickly expand the organization in order to subsequently convince the government of Mariano Rajoy of the advisability of accepting the island as part of Spain.
