Caja de Muertos Island – Ponce, PR

Gorgeous beach, hiking, snorkeling, and blissful seclusion

Caja de Muertos, located off the coast of the city of Ponce on the south coast of the island.  This island is one of the most underrated places in Puerto Rico.  The island is a nature reserve, this is the kind of island a developer or cruise line would pay a high dollar to acquire.  The little accessibility has kept Caja de Muertos sort of a secret, that even a few residents of Puerto Rico have visited.

This uninhabited island is home to Playa Pelicano which has won the Blue Flag award for many years.    You can enjoy a full day of beach-combing, suntanning, and snorkeling.  If you’re staying in Ponce, Playa Pelicano is truly the only beach by our standards.

Two strong points within the European collection are Baroque art and Victorian painting.”

Permanent Collection

“The permanent collection consists of 4,500 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, ceramics, three-dimensional objects, photographs, engravings, drawings, videos and installations of sound art. The works of art span 30 centuries (from 900 BC to the present) and come from Europe, America, and Africa. In 1956 Luis A. Ferré established a foundation that bears his name and acquired his first group of European paintings for the future museum in Ponce that opened in 1959.”

Hang out at a Plaza

To observe the best architecture and European charm of Puerto Rico, visitors ought to visit a plaza (square), considered the center of each municipality.  At the plazas, you’ll find a Catholic church, the Alcaldia (Mayor’s Government Office), local shops, cafes, and small restaurants typically serving traditional Puerto Rican food.  The best part of visiting a plaza is seeing locals just sitting down speaking to friends over a cup of coffee.  Be sure to stop by the table of dominos where abuelitos (grandpas) enjoy the most beloved game, dominos, they’re happy to chat and show off their game.

Our favorite plazas are Plaza de Armas, in Old San Juan, Plaza Colon in Mayaguez (west region), the plaza in San German (the only town with two squares), and the plaza in the town of Dorado, one of the few remaining traditional plazas left on the island.

Wander Around Old San Juan

San Juan is today comprised of many different districts, but the most interesting area for tourists, or at least for those looking to learn more about the history of the city and the people, is Old San Juan.

This is the oldest continually inhabited part of the island and is found separated from the rest of the city, on a small island off the coast.

It’s a wonderful, ramshackle place, full of museums and colonial architecture dating back to the early days of Spanish settlement.

Get a taste for the local flavor and culture of Puerto Rico on this small-group Old San Juan food tour featuring several local eateries.

Join your guide for a culinary exploration of island staples like plantains and sofrito, all with the colorful facades of the city’s oldest neighborhood as your backdrop.

If you are looking for a great walking tour, look no further than this Old San Juan Walking Tour. Explore the colorful buildings and charming streets of Old San Juan in a small group.

Your knowledgeable guide will help you discover the area’s key historic sites and gain new insight into Puerto Rican culture.

3. Go to El Morro

El Morro is the most important sights to visit within Old San Juan. It’s a vast, stone fortress, that dates far back to the very early 16th century.

Float past hundreds of years of history and picturesque scenery during a 2-hour sunset sailing excursion in Old San Juan Harbor.

As you sail, you’ll enjoy up-close views of Old San Juan sights like El Morro fortress, La Fortaleza, Paseo la Princesa and more, all set aglow by the fading late afternoon light.

Things here are much less developed, and the scenery and the beaches are raw and rustic. There are plenty of lonely stretches of white sand to explore as well as a large, protected wildlife area.

Take a Vieques Island day trip from Puerto Rico to ease the stress of figuring out your own itinerary.

History and Entertainment

The discoverer of the island state is Christopher Columbus, his team landed on the shores of Puerto Rico in 1493. According to archaeological research, the very first human settlements on the islands formed about 4,000 years ago, very little is known about the pre-Columbian history of the archipelago. The Spaniards founded the first colonial settlements on the islands in 1508; the archipelago received its current name in 1521. By the beginning of colonization, about 30,000 Indians lived on the islands, according to official figures, by 1530 no more than 1,000 of them survived. The cause of the death of the natives was viral diseases brought by Europeans, and many of them died due to hard physical labor.

The dominance of Spain on the islands continued until the 19th century, the second half of which was marked by the beginning of the struggle of local residents for independence. In 1860, more than half a million people permanently lived on the islands, the vast majority of local residents at that moment were below the poverty line. In the second half of the 19th century, independence uprisings broke out in succession in many cities, in 1898 the first autonomous government was formed in Puerto Rico.

Most Puerto Ricans are Catholics, so Christmas on the island is celebrated in December. Catholic masses are held from 15 to 24 December, that is, until …

However, the state managed to maintain autonomy for only a few months, in July 1898 the war between Spain and the United States began, as a result of which the entire territory of the islands was captured by the United States. The islands continue to remain under the control of the United States even now, in recent years, many local residents have been in favor of the official annexation of the archipelago to the United States as the 51st state.

In addition to interesting natural attractions and ideal conditions for a beach holiday, the island nation is famous for its rich cultural life. During the year, a lot of interesting festivals and carnivals are held here. Very interesting holidays are dedicated to patron saints.

Many beautiful traditions were inherited by the locals from the Spaniards, including an indifferent attitude to salsa. Not a single holiday is complete without the performance of local dance groups. Fans of event tourism will be interested in visiting the islands at the end of January, when the traditional Saint Sebastian Festival is held. In November, it will be interesting to visit the city of Ponce, at which time the annual Bomba-and-Plena festival takes place.

Vieques Island

The cuisine of Vieques traces its history back to the traditional dishes of the Arawak and Taino Indians. Of course, there are differences in cooking, because in the cuisine of the Indians grains, root vegetables, seafood prevailed, and in Puerto Rican, or, as the locals call it, “cosina-criolha”, there are many dishes from meat, legumes, rice, wheat with the addition of vegetable oils, especially olive. This indicates the influence of Spanish cooking traditions, and the presence of herbs, okra and taro – the influence of African traditions. And, … Read

Puerto Rico. Tourist information.

Territory and geography

Puerto Rico is located in the northeastern part of the Caribbean on a large island of the same name and several nearby islands from the Greater Antilles group in the Caribbean Sea. The nearest neighboring states are the American and British Virgin Islands in the east and the Dominican Republic in the west.

Puerto Rico is a Freely Associated or Freely Associated State that is partly dependent on, but not an integral part of, the United States. While sharing citizenship, currency, and defense with the United States, Puerto Rico also has its own constitution, legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The capital of the state, the city of San Juan, is located in the north of the island, in one of the best natural harbors in the Caribbean region.
Most of Puerto Rico’s islands are uninhabited or sparsely populated, the most populous being the main island, approximately 170 km long and 60 km wide, with a coastline of about 500 km. In the center of the main island is the so-called Central mountain range Cordillera Central, where the highest point of Puerto Rico is located – Mount Cerro de Punta (Cerro de Punta), 1338 m above sea level. The southern coast of the island is washed by the Caribbean Sea, and the northern coast by the Atlantic Ocean. There are more than fifty large and shallow rivers in Puerto Rico, most of which originate in the mountains of the central range. There are also seventeen lakes on the island, all of them of artificial origin. The northeastern part of the main island is occupied by the Rio Camai National Cave Park, the largest underground river flows in it and 200 caves with unusual limestone karst formations are hidden.

Nature and climate

Located almost in the heart of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico has a maritime tropical climate, with almost even temperatures throughout the year in the range of + 26-28 °C. At the same time, the temperature on the coast is always several degrees higher than in the central mountainous part of the island. On the south coast, washed by the Caribbean Sea, it is usually a little warmer than on the north. When buying a tour in Puerto Rico, it is important to remember that from June to November, the Atlantic hurricane season comes to the islands, which is characterized by heat and high humidity, as well as strong hurricane-force winds that periodically hit the island.

The peak tourist season in Puerto Rico is from December to April, and July and August can also be called the high season.

Puerto Rico – an island of vibrant life! Reserves and national parks with the wild nature of the country attract here connoisseurs of eco-tourism from all over the world. The diversity of flora and fauna is great and includes almost 20 species of birds, about 250 species of plants, including orchids, many mammals and fish. As well as almost five dozen amphibians, among which there are endemic species that are found only here, for example, the Puerto Rican boa constrictor and the Coqui frog, which lives in the El Yunque rainforest.
In the western part of the southern coast of Puerto Rico, washed by the Caribbean Sea, there is a dry tropical forest Guanica. A great variety of bird species, including endemics, live in the wilds of this forest. The climatic features of this area contribute to the growth of cacti. The dry forest of Guanica is completely different from the humid tropical forest of El Yunque, located in the east of the northern coast of the island. The reason for the local dry climate is the Central Mountain Range, which separates Guanica from the northeastern part of the island, where about 2500 mm of precipitation falls annually, while in Guanica it is less than 750 mm, and in some places even less than 150 mm.

Currency exchange and banks

Although the US dollar is the official currency of Puerto Rico, sometimes you will see price tags in stores that show prices in “pesos”, the Puerto Rican dollar. If you’re planning a trip to Puerto Rico, it’s best to bring some US dollars in cash to buy souvenirs from the little shops and tips, as well as a dollar bank card. Just like in the USA, cards and traveler’s checks are universally accepted in Puerto Rico.

Customs and Immigration

Puerto Rico follows the laws and regulations of the United States. Import and export of foreign currency without a declaration is allowed in the amount of up to 10,000 US dollars or its equivalent. This also applies to travelers checks. If you are carrying gold, do not forget to declare it. Items for personal use are not subject to customs duties. In addition, you can import a block of cigarettes and up to 1 liter of hard alcohol into the country duty-free. Care must be taken when importing food products and any items of organic origin. We recommend that you check before importing whether they are allowed to be imported into the territory of Puerto Rico.

Customs control can be quite quick and hassle-free, but due to the global trend of tightening inspection rules, it may take longer. As in many countries around the world, Puerto Rico practices a random selection of passengers for more thorough screening. Anyone who arrives may be one of them, then your luggage will be subject to a closer inspection, and the officer may ask additional questions. This is usually done to curb illegal migration, so the questions will be about your plans for staying in the country and perhaps having sufficient funds to cover your expenses while traveling to Puerto Rico.

As with customs regulations, Puerto Rico’s visa regulations are similar to those in the United States. If you intend to travel to Puerto Rico, make sure you get a US visa. Opening hours for institutions, shops and museums

The standard opening hours for shops are from 9 am to 7 pm, but some shops are open until 9 pm before weekends. On Saturday – a shortened working day, and on Sunday only the shops of the port area, where cruise ships call, as well as souvenir shops and small shops, are open.

Transport

Unfortunately, there is no direct flight between Russia and Puerto Rico. To get to Puerto Rico from Moscow, we recommend taking flights via New York. Puerto Rico International Airport – Luis Munoz Marin (Aeropuerto Internacional Luis Munoz Marin) receives daily flights from the United States, and also connects with Caribbean countries such as Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, Saint Martin.

Intercity bus service is virtually non-existent in Puerto Rico. Local residents use mostly private vehicles. As a result, the island has a well-developed network of roads and expressways. Tourists can use a taxi service in San Juan or rent a car.
Puerto Rico Seaport receives the largest cruise liners every day and is one of the largest ports in the world.

Telephone codes and communications

Cellular communication in Puerto Rico differs from the GSM standard we are used to. The local standard is called CDMA/TDMA. Most Russian mobile operators have contracts with local operators and provide international roaming. Before leaving for Puerto Rico, we recommend that you check with your operator about the availability of roaming and activate the most favorable tariff.

787 is the international code for the island. Also, along with this code, the code 939 is used. All numbers contain seven digits with the mandatory code 787. In the case when the call is made from abroad, you must add +1 before the code 787.
Internet in Puerto Rico is not widespread enough. However, if you want to book a good standard hotel in Puerto Rico, then Internet access will certainly be offered to you there.
