EPIC PR. ADVENTURE!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Frances_O, Aug 2022

What an EPIC adventure! Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to experience nature at its best and push themselves and others out of their comfort zone. Things to know: READ!! They are clear about expectations you are going to get muddy and sweaty, you are going to climb up and down slippery rocks, you are going to be fully submerged and swimming in a ( cold) deep water river and you are going to love every minute of it. We were scheduled with the 9:45am group. The hike is NOT 4 hours long as originally assumed, it breaks down to a 30/40min drive to a private location then a 30min walk ( on muddy rocky path) to the river /waterfall 2 hours approx. at the river ( this is the best part) and 30min walk back to your car. ( arrived at 2pm) Where you get to hose down mud and change into dry clothes, if you want. Recommend: Eat breakfast and wear good tracking shoes hiking sandal or sneakers are the best. Bring your phone ( even if they say not to ) only if it’s waterproof protected and around your neck ( you can bring a backpack but it will get soaked) If you are unable, don’t worry the guides take pictures and email them to you. NOT immediately so be patient , this is what we call island time. Good news: NO mosquitos or insects to worry about, so no bug spray necessary. Do wear eco friendly sunblock if you need to, most of the walk is in the shade.
Patricia and Aumari were incredible guides helpful, funny and very knowledgeable of El Yunque and it’s unique ecosystem. They provided us with fresh fruit at the river ( nice touch) and water, granola bars and beer at the end of the excursion. My son who is 13 said it the best “mom, this exceeded my expectations” I couldn’t have agree more. My group of 5 included: 3 adults age 50, a 16 and 13 year old.
Hope this helps! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Glad I went!

Erin_G, Aug 2022

Jami and Bradley were great guides. Loved the water. Hike was muddy and challenging for some but still a good experience. I opted not to take my 7 year old up to the waterfall slide and glad i didn’t. It would have been too difficult for her.
I do wish we could have seen some wildlife but trail is very crowded and loud.

Amazing..so worth it

Jesse and Paula were amazing!! As someone who is experiencing health issues I was super nervous to do this. But they made it easy and fun. Even cried making it to the top being so proud of myself. This is a must do, we will definitely be doing this again when we bring our kids. Plus Jesse gives great recommendations for food and things to do.

Favorite part of our Puerto Rico vacation!

JENNIFER_K, Jul 2022

We loved this tour! You cannot get to this portion of the rainforest on your own! We agreed that this was our favorite part of our vacation and we think everyone needs to see it! The views are gorgeous and pictures do not do it justice. Our guides Maxine and Amoudy were fantastic. Couple of tips – wear good shoes because the terrain is challenging. If you are looking for a strenuous and long hike, this is not it. This is a short hike to a gorgeous part of the rainforest through difficult terrain. Do not bring anything (remove jewelry, sunglasses, watches, hats, etc.). You will be completely submerged in the water. Someone in our group lost a gold bracelet on the tour. You do not need to risk bringing your phone or a camera because the guides will take a ton of pictures for you. We had a blast on this and highly recommend it!

If you don’t speak English, I don’t recommend.

Stephanie_G, Jun 2022

I had fun, it was a really good time. The only thing I would like to bring up, is the fact that I paid for a Spanish tour and it was in English. My family members do not speak English which is why I chose Spanish, and the tour wasnt, they barely “translated” anything, and kind of felt that it was due to the fact that they were minority and most were tourists who spoke English but if you pay and chose a language, the tour should be in that specific language not based on “majority”. If that the case, take the Spanish option off. I had to be the one translation the information that was been given to my family, I am not the guide, nor paid to have to do that. The only information they received in Spanish were instructions or questions, in that aspect I was very disappointed. Overall, removing that part, it was a great experience, it was an intense activity, be prepared! The place is gorgeous.

Best tour guide.

Brendishia_W, Jun 2022

Armondo and Patricia was the best tour guides ever!!!!!! If I could give them a 10 I would! Had a one in a life time experience and I was one of our favorite things we did in Puerto Rico! They even gave us tips on things to do after the rainforest tour!

Great experience Not difficult to complete

Jose_L, May 2022

Great tour ! simple and easy walk thru the rain forest towards the waterfall.
I would recommend bring “disposable” or old shoes, because they are likely to very dirty with mud difficult to clean.
otherwise very nice experience by jumping into the water and go thru the natural slide.
when going towards the rally point use Waze as a map for directions, other maps are unlikely to work and not giving accurate descriptions.

Very neat experience, learned a lot.

Stephanie_G, May 2022

Very neat experience, learned a lot. This is a fairly physically demanding tour/experience, so just keep that in mind. I really enjoyed it and it pushed me out of my comfort zone to see things I wouldn’t normally see or do. The tour guides Max (female) and I am so sorry I forget the other one but they were terrific and made your felt comfortable with everything. It is a rather busy area that you go to, so the only downfall is it doesn’t feel like you’re in a “secluded” rain forest or anything, but it was still neat. I think maybe a full day would take you deeper into the rain forest, so since this is just a half day it is very surface level, but was worth it.

Slippery but worth the Hike!

Crystal_L, Apr 2022

It’s not every day you step into a rainforest without a passport. Lots of beautiful plants and waterfalls. Cliff jumping and rope swinging into the river was fun! Do yourself a favor and stop by Walmart or Walgreens and be prepared to ruin cheap shoes!

The Prefect Day Trip

Rebecca_G, Mar 2022

This tour was excellent!!!!all they take all pictures you need was a plus. You leave your cell phones behind so you won’t lose them was perfect. I highly recommend!l to anyone who want to do a short day trip walking ( a little climbing) thru the El Yunque rainforest and see the and swim in beautiful waterfalls !!!! My tour guides were exceptionally considerate and knowledgeable. I love the fresh fruits at the end.

Great views, great guides.

rebecca_w, Mar 2022

We had Jessie and Jamie as tour guides, and they were wonderful. Expect to get everything you bring soaked, the guides will take photos for you. Being that its in an actual rainforest, your shoes will be completely mudded so bring a durable closed toe pair you’re willing to spare. The experience consists of a short walk to an enclosed pool and waterfall with a rope to swing on and a large rock used to dive from. Farther up the stream there is a natural rock slide with a refreshing pool below. You must be physically fit to fully enjoy this experience.

Family bonding

Cynthia_H, Feb 2022

I would highly recommend it. Make sure your fit for hiking and climbing. My family and I had a great time. Love the Rainforest and waterfall’s Our tour guide was amazing.

Really great trip and trip guides

Alexandra_S, Dec 2021

This is a very well run trip. Our guides Jess and Patricia did an awesome job keeping everyone safe and happy. The hike and water stops are very busy with many tour groups but our guides were able to adapt and still give us a great adventure. Our tour included people of all skill levels and everyone had fun on the waterfall slides, even the non-swimmers! Thanks for a great day 😊

Beautiful Site. Great staff.

My wife and I did the zip line tour with our 15-year-old daughter in January 2019. The location is beautiful. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I thought the way they have the course setup, working you up from short simple runs to longer and more complex ones were very smart.

90,000 Rainforests are adapted to hurricanes, but climate change could destroy them | Hi-News.ru – News of high technologies.

When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in September 2017, the island’s forests were a pitiful sight of split tree trunks, fallen branches and leaves. Particularly hard hit was the El Yunque Tropical National Forest, covering more than 110 square kilometers, located in northeastern Puerto Rico. It is known for its pristine beauty and high biodiversity. The winds that hit it at speeds up to 250 kilometers per hour left behind only leafless, partially damaged tree trunks. Four years later, the rainforest still contains clear signs of a major storm. But the ecosystem is gradually recovering. Scientists from the US Forest Service, as well as NASA and some other organizations, are actively studying this process. For researchers, the observations allow us to figure out how forests will change in the near future, when hurricanes as a result of global warming become more powerful and similar to the recent hurricane Ida. Most of all, scientists are interested in the question – does global warming threaten the complete destruction of tropical forests, which are generally adapted to hurricanes.

El Yunque Reserve, four years after Hurricane Maria, begins to recover

How the rainforest recovers from Hurricane

To understand the damage to the forest caused by Hurricane Maria, the strongest since 1928, scientists studied it from a bird’s eye view. In addition to aerial photography, they used LIDAR, that is, a laser rangefinder, as well as other tools that made it possible to create a three-dimensional map and indicate the composition of the ecosystem on it.

The damage was more severe than expected. What used to be rainforest with a continuous closed canopy has turned into a “patchwork quilt” of separate fragments of closed forest and open areas. The rainforest has become more like a savannah ecosystem, the researchers say. But, most importantly, it has become much lower. On average, according to scientists, the forest lost 7 meters in height. We can say that a powerful hurricane “trimmed” El Yunque.

Hurricane Maria, which hit Puerto Rico in 2017, was the most destructive since 1928

Other scientists studying the forest from the ground confirmed the extent of the damage – Hurricane Maria destroyed twice as many trees as Hurricane Hugo in 1989, long considered the most destructive for the forest over the entire history of observations.

At the same time, the researchers found that not all types of tropical forests suffered the same destruction. Many large hardwoods that grew on low elevations were broken in half as a result of the storm. At the same time, low palm trees, which grow mainly in the high parts of the forests of El Yunque, endured the hurricane quite well. As the researchers note, their trunks are able to bend rather than break in strong winds.

More information about the most exciting and unexpected scientific observations you will find on our Telegram channel

Six months after the hurricane, many grasses, shrubs and sprouts of the tropical tree Cecropia began to actively grow and recover, taking advantage of the sunlight, which was no longer obstructed by the crowns of trees . As the scientists say, these “pioneers” will be pushed out later as the forest ecosystem continues to recover, causing the canopy to close. But, in any case, the latest data shows that El Yunque’s recovery is going faster than scientists expected.

Tropical forest recovering unevenly after a hurricane, which is a mystery to scientists

Rainforest recovering unevenly

Scientists in 2020 repeated aerial photography and survey of damaged forest. These data were recently published in the journal Springer Nature. As it turns out, about two-thirds of the forested areas that lost height during Hurricane Maria quickly regained it between 2018 and 2020, which is to be expected from hurricane-adapted forests. However, almost a third of the forest areas have not grown at all since then. According to scientists, it was an unexpected find that surprised them.

It is possible that some areas of the forest have been damaged to such an extent that the trees can no longer grow quickly. It is also possible that for some reason, instead of wasting energy on growing, these trees are investing more resources in restoring their root system. But why this happens remains a mystery to scientists. This process does not appear to be related to specific tree species or topographical features of the area or other factors that often affect reforestation in El Yunque.

Global warming will change the rainforests

Over the past 30 years, El Yunque has experienced three major hurricanes, that is, category 3 and above. Storms of this intensity have occurred about every 50 years. But over the past three decades, the situation has worsened. As a result, the changes that are happening now in El Yunque are suggesting to scientists what could happen to all the rainforests on the planet in the future.

Over the past 30 years, the number of palm trees has increased in the reserve

Scientists note that the number of palms in El Yunque has recently increased. If the forest is hit by such storms about every ten years, the palms will begin to dominate the trees, causing the forest to become lower and absorb less carbon.

Such a forest may be more resistant to strong hurricanes, since the palm trees are not prone to break in strong winds. But other anticipated impacts of climate change, such as increased droughts, will also affect palm trees. Unlike trees, they cannot survive in conditions of lack of moisture.

Materials about global warming that were not published on the site, you can read on our Yandex.Zen channel to other shrub-dominated ecosystems that tolerate storms and drought well. Finally, let me remind you that climate warming threatens not only the nature of the earth, but also human health, as I have already talked about.
