Hailed as one of the island’s most opulent resorts (it cost $342 million to build), Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve unfolds along three miles of white-sand beaches bordering the beautiful Dorado Beach Reserve — a former coconut and grapefruit plantation turned playground for Hollywood royalty. Laurance S. Rockefeller was a former owner, and Amelia Earhart, John F. Kennedy, and Liz Taylor were all regulars in this property’s former heyday. Today, the 1,400-acre nature playground draws couples and families alike with its swish rooms, water park, and high-end spa. The resort did suffer some damage from Hurricane Maria, but after closing down for renovations, it reopened in October 2018.

Past the security gate, a winding road through a forest of coconut palms and rainforest-like gardens transitions guests to a private world of exclusivity. Guests are greeted with mini homemade popsicles, and are guided up stairs past giant agaves and moat-like ponds to a grand open-air pavilion built entirely from sand-colored travertine. There’s an emphasis on luxury, but the design and materials complement the natural landscape. After check-in, a private “embajador” (ambassador) escorts guests to their oceanfront rooms via golf cart along boardwalks shaded overhead with canopies.

The Ritz-Carlton is essentially split into two neighboring zones either side of the entrance. East Beach embraces most facilities, such as the lobby, Positivo Sand Bar, Signature Restaurant, and the fitness center. The main cabana pool is also located here — it’s a jewel-like expanse of emerald green, overlooking the beach. West Beach encompasses the Encanto Beach Club facilities. Spa Botanico in itself spans five-acres, housing both indoor and outdoor areas throughout a gorgeous pineapple garden. Getting around at the Ritz is done by foot, on a free-to-borrow bike, or by golf cart.

This is not a cheap place, particularly with resort fees and pricey restaurants, but most guests find the superb service and amenities worth the high rate.

This Ritz-Carlton is located in Dorado, a beachside township on Puerto Rico’s central north coast. It’s a popular tourist destination with good surfing waves, around a 40-minute drive west of San Juan. Dorado is around 40 minutes to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport and 35 to 40 minutes to Old San Juan. A number of golf courses reside in the Dorado area either within or surrounding the Ritz property; they include East Golf Course (six-minute drive), the Sugarcane Course (nine minutes), and the Pineapple Course (14 minutes). The Ritz resides on its own private stretch of beachfront. A number of fast-food joints such as Pizza Hut, along with a Walmart, Supermart, and Starbucks, are all about 10 minutes away. DALLAS, March 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Braemar Hotels & Resorts Inc. (NYSE: BHR) (“Braemar” or the “Company”) today announced that it has completed the acquisition of the 96-room Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Dorado, Puerto Rico (the “Dorado Beach” or the “Property”), previously announced on December 27, 2021. In addition, the Company acquired the income stream attributable to fourteen luxury residential units adjacent to the Property that participate in a rental management program. The total consideration for the acquisition was approximately $193 million ($1.8 million per key, inclusive of the residential units in the rental program). The acquisition was funded with $104 million of cash, six million shares of common stock, and the assumption of a $54 million mortgage loan. For purposes of calculating total consideration for the transaction, a price of $5.84 per share was assumed.

Developer Federico Stubbe has transformed his private residence into a gallery home with state-of-the-art comfort. Settling in the Caribbean is a dream for many, especially during the harsh months of winter. For Federico Stubbe, this is not a dream, but a reality. President of the Prisa Group, a major developer, Stubbe is actively developing his native Puerto Rico. His company is leading large-scale projects in the cities of San Juan, Bayamón, Manati, Sidra, Gurabo. The gem of the “collection” is the Dorado Beach resort and the house that Stubbe built there for his family. Plot of half a hectare on the Caribbean coast back in 1958 year began to develop Lawrence Rockefeller. In the 1960s, it was a vacation spot for the rich and prosperous. Today, the point of attraction for tourists from all over the world is the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Hotel, opened in 2012: business and political elites, Hollywood stars flock here for vacations, famous athletes recuperate here.

Thanks to three glass outbuildings, an ordinary modernist villa has been transformed into a piece of contemporary architecture.

Stubbe first appeared in Dorado in 1990, when, as part of a joint project with the Pritzker family, he was implementing a Rockefeller master plan. The house where the Stubbe family lives today was built in 1995. “Initially, it was a very ordinary Mediterranean style villa, designed by a local architect. We set up a home for my mother there. I rented half of her house while we were renovating our mansion in San Juan. We liked living in Dorado so much that we decided to settle here. I had to buy my mom’s house! From that moment on, Dorado Beach became my main place of residence. Seven years ago, the interiors were literally gutted, we added glass ceilings, rebuilt a lot – there was a complete transformation. The same can be said about the life of Stubbe himself. After his beloved wife, the mother of his two daughters, unexpectedly passed away, the developer again found a girlfriend of life.

At a Formula 1 race in Barcelona, where he was testing cars, his attention was caught by Carolina Figueredo, a Venezuelan art dealer in Caracas. She shared Stubbe’s passion for fast cars and wild adventures. They had an affair, and Carolina became the full owner of a luxurious residence in Dorado Beach. The gallery owner quickly got used to the new place, founded the FITS Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes artists, engages in educational programs and produces art installations. Of course, Figueredo paid special attention to works of art in her own home. Her excellent taste reigns here.

Together with her husband, for several years Carolina has collected a first-class collection of contemporary Asian art, works were brought from numerous trips to Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, and also regularly bought at fairs in Basel and Miami. “I started studying Asian contemporary art about ten years ago,” says Karolina. — With the exception of Japan, it was a young, rapidly developing art. As a museum worker, it seemed interesting to me to follow the dynamics.”

The kitchen-dining room is located in one of the glass cubes. Cooking is a hobby of the housewife.

In the living room-gallery, contemporary art coexists with the most valuable terracotta sculptures of ancient China.

The house has recently been completely remodeled. Carolina Figueredo worked hand in hand with designer Jean-Pierre Santoni. He helped arrange a hall that resembles a contemporary art gallery. The designer and collectors together chose the works of Takashi Hinoda, Takomo Sawada, Lin Tian Mio. Together with Santoni, Federico Stubbe figured out how to combine the house with a garage, because his favorite vintage cars Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover and the advanced Tesla Model S are stored there. nature and love art. Their residence has become a real art museum in a tropical park.

The stunning vegetation that surrounds the house is a full-fledged element of the interior, it is clearly visible through the giant windows. To enhance the effect, the owners decided to build a green wall – the fashion for “vertical gardening” was laid by the French landscape architect Patrick Blanc. Another decoration of the estate is a magnificent golf course. Thus, the owners are in contact with nature all day long: if they do not wander through the emerald lawns, then they contemplate it from the windows of the villa. The park and lawns are the object of constant care of invited experts.

Spectacular staircase gathers the space of the central hall. On the walls are the work of Liu Bolin and Liu Dao. The outer surface is polished to a shine. It effectively reflects the work.

For the furnishing of the four-bedroom house, the designer Jean-Pierre Santoni chose author’s items – interesting, with character. Functional items, armchairs and lamps were bought so that they looked no lower in level than the works of art on the walls. This is how objects by Jean Prouvé, Fritz Hansen, Arne Jacobsen, Christian Liaigre appeared in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.

The house has a lot of free space, so the works of art are exhibited almost like in a museum. On the wall is the work of Y. San. The colored sculptures of the Chinese woman Lin Tian Myo are an Asian answer to the American J. Koons.

The residence has three transparent volumes inspired by the glass Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York. One of the cubes contains Karolina’s office, another contains the kitchen-dining room, and the third contains one of the living rooms. “Glass structures are commonly used in commercial properties, and we wanted to see what it looks like in a private residence.” In the Caribbean it is very important to include nature in the overall structure of the house, and the Stubbes succeeded brilliantly in this.
