Great Escapes: A Luxury Excursion at Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico

Text size

These days it seems like everyone—from crypto traders to entrepreneurs—is moving to Puerto Rico in search of the good life, not to mention some appealing tax breaks.

The Rockefellers, visionaries as they were, were prescient about Puerto Rico, known as isla del encanto, or “island of enchantment. ” In 1955
Laurence S. Rockefeller
bought Dorado Beach, then a pristine jungle coast 30 minutes west of San Juan. He went on to develop what was then the Caribbean’s first eco-resort set on 50 acres of beachfront property. For the opening of the resort, Rockefeller gathered friends such as
Elizabeth Taylor,

John F. Kennedy,
and
Mickey Mantle.

The appeal of Dorado Beach has stood the test of time, but now it just looks a bit different. Today, Dorado Beach is a Ritz Carlton Reserve, an elite group of five properties around the world, that are known for their next-level service and accommodations. It features a passel of top-flight restaurants, amenities galore, and an elite golf course conceived by renowned design masterminds
Robert Trent Jones
and
Robert Trent Jones Jr.
The lushly tropical gated community is what the Dorado Beach area is best known for among luxury travelers.

Residences at the Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach, many of which sit along the golf course, start around a cool US$12 million and go up to US$80 million. (Property values have quadrupled over the last few years.)

As an owner of one of the homes put it: “Everyone wants to be here.” Airbnb’s in Dorado in general are also in high demand as luxury condo complexes and construction cranes are popping up everywhere. But outside this exclusive enclave, there is another world that is not to be missed—one that has the vibe of a largely undiscovered beach and surf town with a growing and dynamic food and drink scene.

Residences at the Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach, many of which sit along the golf course, start around a cool US$12 million and go up to US$80 million.

COURTESY OF DORADO BEACH, A RITZ CARLTON RESERVE

Dorado Beach, A Ritz Carlton Reserve, is considered one of the top resorts in the region. Decades earlier, the Rockefellers had the foresight to turn what looks like a great surfing beach into calm, swimmable water by moving large rocks to break the waves, effectively creating pockets of lagoon along the oceanfront. The rooms are larger than many New York City apartments—many have palatial outdoor shower areas, plunge pools, and private pathways to the beach.

If you never wanted to leave the property—or your room, for that matter —you wouldn’t have to because there are around half a dozen dining options. Don’t miss Encanto, a casual Mediterranean beachfront restaurant that serves addictive naan (Indian bread), fresh grilled fish, and indulgent desserts like churros. Coa, the property’s fine dining restaurant, is a destination in and of itself, especially on Friday nights when they feature live jazz, but the cuisine—simple and refined grilled fish and the best Wagyu beef you’ll find within a thousand miles—is the real draw.

For a more accessible price point a short jaunt down the road from the Ritz Carlton is the Hyatt Residence Club, where rooms, even in high season, start around US$400 a night. The Hyatt has 82 residence-style rooms, including two-bedroom residences with kitchens. The beachfront property has an onsite pool and fitness center.

EAT & DRINK

Arguably one of the best views in Dorado can be experienced at Kikita Beach House. This is the ideal place for sunset drinks. The sweeping, expansive vista from a patio on a promontory over the Atlantic is also the ideal for watching surfers ride the frothy waves. An added bonus: you’ll get a flavor of the local happy hour scene.

Down the street—about a four-minute walk from Kikita Beach House—is Rombo, one of the most inventive cocktail bars in the area. Opened in 2020 by a mixologist from Marmalade, a San Juan restaurant that is considered one of the best in Puerto Rico, Rombo, easily Dorado’s hippest establishment, is bringing a genuine speakeasy type of experience to the town. The drinks, which are extremely reasonably priced, are works of art. Sample any cocktail featuring mezcal or ginger for a memorable gustatory experience.

Tabla is another newcomer to the Dorado dining scene. This tapas-style restaurant has an extensive wine list, serves top-notch inventive cocktails, and so-called small plates that are mostly much larger than appetizer size. Don’t miss the octopus and the house’s vegetarian take on alcapurrias, a Puerto Rican street food staple. For a real Dorado institution, try El Ladrillo—“red brick” in Spanish—which has been around for over 45 years. The art-filled restaurant makes a very authentic paella and serves excellent sangria.

EXPERIENCE

Rockefeller Trail.

COURTESY OF DORADO BEACH, A RITZ CARLTON RESERVE

Dorado is known for two things: beaches and golf courses. There are numerous courses to choose from, many of which run through jungle and oceanfront coconut groves. The most prestigious course, which can only be used if you’re a guest at the Ritz Carlton, a resident, or the guest of the guest, is part of the TPC network and was named the No. 1 golf course in Puerto Rico. East Course is for players of all levels and Sugarcane is the more challenging.

Don’t worry, not everything in Dorado is members-only. Visitors can go to the public beaches known as balnearios, including
Cerro Gordo
Beach, which is dotted with palm trees and is just as stunning as the beach at the five-star resort. Next to it you’ll find a park, also known as Cerro Gordo, popular for running, walking, and mountain biking.

Those who are staying at the Ritz Carlton can take kitesurfing lessons—a sport for which Dorado has particularly good conditions —with Goodwinds Sports. Owned by former Olympic windsurfer
Karla Barrera
and her husband,
Phil Morstad,
Goodwinds offers kitesurfing, surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, and sailing lessons. It also offers weeklong summer kite and windsurfing camps for teens.

Tropical paradise: villa in Puerto Rico

Photo
Emily Andrews

This villa in the small Puerto Rican town of Dorado, 20 kilometers from San Juan, is a legendary place. The house, built in 1928, stands on the ocean and once belonged to the famous female aviator Clara Livingston, who inherited the estate from her father. Clara was an active woman, she immediately replaced the dilapidated wooden house with a new one, and at the same time built a runway on the site. nine0009

EMILY ANDREWSE

Clara, who died in 1992 at the respectable age of 92, has lived here for about twenty years. During this time, the house has seen a lot. So, for example, in 1937, the writer and the first woman pilot to fly over the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart, stopped here during her last flight. Some time later, she went missing over the Pacific Ocean while trying to fly around the world in her twin-engine light aircraft. nine0009

After living here for almost twenty years, Livingston sold the estate to businessman Laurence Rockefeller, third generation of the great billionaire dynasty, who, among other things, was engaged in the hotel business. Rockefeller decided to open the luxurious Dorado Beach resort here, and in the villa itself, which has now become known as Su Casa (translated from Spanish as “Your Home”), there is a golf club and a restaurant. Since 2012, the villa has been part of the Dorado Beach Ritz-Carlton Reserve and is rented out as a guest house. nine0009

A couple of years ago, the resort was badly damaged by Hurricane Maria, after which it was never fully restored. And finally, this year, the New York studio Champalimaud got down to business, which carried out a large-scale renovation and renovation, completely eliminating the consequences of the hurricane and turning the legendary house into a modern, fashionable, comfortable space.

“The building was still half-destroyed: the floors were swollen, the doors would not close, and part of the roof was missing,” says Anna Beeber, lead designer at the studio. nine0009

, thick concrete walls that will reliably protect against future natural disasters.

The area near the house has also undergone modernization: now there is a garden, a landscaped and tiled courtyard, an entrance area and a huge infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. nine0009

Natural materials were used in the interior decoration: dark and light wood, tiles, textiles, and a calm light-pastel palette, sometimes “diluted” with the classic black and white pattern of floor tiles.

“The result is a harmonious unity of nature and interior – a truly peaceful environment that allows you to relax, think, read and just relax in this elegant and comfortable version of the barefoot resort life,” say the designers. nine0009

EMILY ANDREWSE

The main addition made by the studio is a narrow covered terrace along the front of the house, which forms a bright hall separating the dining room from the large bedroom.

There are five bedrooms in the house with their own bathrooms, which are scattered throughout the building. For the convenience of the guests, the designers have added an elevator to the two existing staircases connecting the first and second floors of the house, so now moving around the villa is not difficult even for older guests. nine0009

In addition to the guest rooms, on the first floor of the building there is a playroom for children and a home cinema with pink walls and burgundy furniture. These colors were borrowed from the original palette of the Clara Livingston villa and are reminiscent of the history of this house.

The designers also approached the choice of furniture with special attention. In the interior of Su Casa, vintage original pieces sit side by side with design icons such as Hans J. Wegner armchairs, Oluce’s Atollo lamp or Minotti furniture and objects made to order in workshops in New York. And besides, the studio invited local artists who created colorful paintings and murals, which became the main decoration of the villa. nine0105 bosque
