CULEBRA

If you thought Culebra was off the grid, just wait until you see Culebrita. Accessible by only private tour or boat charter, Culebrita is a tiny, uninhabited island located 5 miles off of Culebra. Keep a look out for the Culebrita Lighthouse, the only man-made structure on the island, which dates back to the Spanish-era. Keep a look out for the Culebrita Lighthouse, the only man-made structure on the island. This hidden gem is definitely worth a visit!

Culebra’s white sandy beaches are much less crowded than those in most of Puerto Rico. Flamenco Beach is considered the most popular beach on the island and has been rated one of the best in the world by TripAdvisor and Forbes. Its horseshoe-shaped bay is an idyllic place to enjoy snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing and more. While you’re there, be sure to take a photo in front of the famous graffiti-covered military tanks left behind by the US Navy during World War II.

Get your fins ready! Culebra is the perfect place for snorkelling or scuba diving. The coral reefs are full of brightly colored fish, and there are many natural tunnels, caves and wrecks to explore. Remember to bring your eco-friendly sunscreen to keep our reefs safe from harmful chemicals.

Discover Culebra at your leisure by renting a jeep or golf cart. Enjoy and feel the sea breeze as you explore this 7-mile long and 4-mile wide island. Culebra is the smallest of the Spanish Virgin Islands, making it easy to get around in the blink of an eye.

The National Wildlife Refuge on Culebra was established in 1909 by President Theodore Roosevelt and remains one of the oldest wildlife refuges administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is home to more than 115 species of birds and the largest seabird nesting area in the Caribbean. The refuge serves as habitat for endangered sea turtles, as well as other endangered animal and plant species. Nearly 25% of Culebra and 23 surrounding islands make up the refuge area.

The Culebra Historical Museum, also known as El Polvorin, is a museum dedicated to the history of Culebra. The museum is housed in a small building that was used as an ammunition depot by the United States Navy during World War II. The museum features historical artefacts from this period of warfare, as well as exhibits on native Taino Indians, sea turtle conservation and the island’s natural history.

How to get to Flamenco Beach using the Ferry

How to get to the Fantastic Playa Flamenco

Flamenco Beach is a hidden gem tucked away on Puerto Rico’s outlying island, Culebra. It is an ocean side paradise with no equal. But getting there isn’t as simple as other Puerto Rican beaches. Here’s my guide to getting to the magnificent beach, and everything you need to know to prepare yourself for it.

Getting to Culebra

Similar to going to Vieques island, getting to Culebra comes with a few options. You can either catch a flight over or choose the ferry (once again). The decision is based off whether you have more time or money to spend. We rented a car from San Juan, and drove to the ferry terminal in Ceiba. It took an hour and a half to get there, but allow some extra time for traffic. The ferry ride took us about 45mins until we arrived at the beautiful island.

Reserving Ferry Tickets to Culebra

It’s possible to buy tickets at the ferry terminal, but there’s never a guarantee they won’t sell out. We were fortunate to visit on the off season in November so there were no crowds. But during peak travel season (usually summer months), there might be a a limited amount of space so either buy them way before your departure time or online. You’ll have to pay a little extra for a service fee, but it’s worth it to hold your spot. Here’s the ferry schedule from Ceiba to Culebra.

Don’t just wait around in life for things to happen. Make life happen!

Ceiba Ferry Terminal

If you’re driving to Ceiba, you can park your car for just $7 per 24 hours. A van will then shuttle you to the ferry terminal. Be sure to eat before or pack some snacks since dining options are limited to greasy concession stand food or vending machines. After you scan your ticket, head to the Culebra seating side to wait for your ride. Residents usually get priority boarding, which is another reason to book tickets well in advance.

The party boat vibe was so different than the Vieques ferry

Getting around Culebra

Culebra is a small island so it’s pretty standard to just go for a day trip. But if you’re looking to stay a few days on this island paradise, you can always find a hotel. There are golf karts and jeeps that you can also rent to drive yourself around. If you are only going to Flamenco Beach, there are taxi shuttles waiting to take you there for only $3 a person. There are tons of drivers transporting people from Flamenco beach back to the ferry terminal, but you can also call the taxi service at your convenience ( +1 787-358-4816).

This guyFlamenco Beach

*If you are going to take the shuttle DO NOT pay in advance for a round trip! One of the drivers offered a 5$ round trip fee but then gave us a fake number and never came back when we called him.

Playa Flamenco

Upon arrival, you’ll see why all the trials and tribulations were worth it. Consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in the world, Flamenco Beach does not disappoint. It’s filled with gorgeous, soft, white sand and devoid of almost any seaweed or debris. Perfectly clear, calm, turquoise waters line the inlet while majestic hills and palm trees fill the coastline. The beach is super clean and very empty compared to other top beaches. It truly is a secluded paradise, worthy being the greatest in the world.

The Tanks of Flamenco Beach

Along the shore line of this beautiful 1 mile beach lies a forgotten tank. Facing the ocean, walk down to the left and you can’t miss it. This rusted, old relic is a remnant of the USA Navy testing facility. The abandoned tanks are now covered in colorful artistic graffiti that gives the beach its own unique flare.

TANKSONA BEACH

*I would suggest arriving early in the morning and leaving BY 5:30pm. The mosquitoes come out in full force as the sun starts to set and even our bug repellent did little to keep them away.

Food on Culebra

While many people bring their own food while visiting Flamenco, There is an array of concession stands with lots of options. Besides the beach area, our favorite restaurant was the Dinghy Dock. Only about a 6min walk from the ferry terminal, It has amazing food and a cool atmosphere. The restaurant is right on the water and there’s even a swarm of large fish circling around for food. The pinchos and lobster empanadillas were great!

Dont mind that creepy red light in the backgroundA+Really thought these were sharks at first

Flamenco beach is the best beach I’ve ever been to in my life. If you have some time I recommend making the trip out to see it. I’m looking forward to visiting the world’s other top beaches to see how they compare to this Caribbean paradise. Seeing tanks on a beach is another unique feature that sets it apart from anywhere in the world! Here’s a guide if you’d like to visit the sister island Vieques. Top 10 beaches according to millions of tourists from all over the world :: Infoniak

Travel

When the temperature in the northern hemisphere is near or below zero, sometimes you want to escape from the cold and relax in a warm place, preferably on the beach.

In 2015, the world famous travel website TripAdvisor published a list of the best beaches from around the world, according to several million users.

From the white sands of the Turks and Caicos Islands to the crystal clear waters of Rabbit Beach, Lampedusa, Italy, here are the top 10 beaches in the world:

Elafonisi beach, ca.

Crete, Greece

Location

Elafonisi is located in the southwestern part of the island of Crete. This oblong beach “separates” from Crete at high tide, and you might think that this is a separate island. And when the tide is out, Crete can be reached on foot. It is very easy to get here – from the nearest town (Chania) it takes only about 1.5 hours if you go by car or bus.

What is the secret

Yellow sand mixed with incredibly small shards of shells, giving it a pinkish hue. It is also worth noting that this beach is a protected natural area, which consists of sand dunes. Some species of rare representatives of the fauna live here, including big-headed sea turtles, which are listed in the Red Book.

Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Archipelago, Australia

Location

This beach stretches along Whitsunday Island for 7 km. This place is located near mainland Australia, and you can get here by water (near the ports of Airlie Beach and Shute Harbor), and from Hamilton Island.

What is the secret

The most amazing thing about this beach is its incredibly white sand. Sand is 98 percent pure silica, which is what makes it white. Since there is no silicon dioxide in the local rocks, it is assumed that the sand appeared on the beach due to sea currents that washed it over millions of years.

It is also worth noting that in the northern part of the beach there is a Hill Inlet bay, where during high tide the movement of sand and water creates a fascinating play of color. The stronger the tide, the more the white sand mixes with the turquoise waters of the bay, resulting in a unique palette of colors.

Flamenco Beach, Fr. Culebra, Puerto Rico

Location

Flamenco Beach is located in the northern part of Culebra Island, which in turn is located 27 km from the main island of Puerto Rico.

What is the secret

The length of the beach is about 1. 5 km. It stretches along a bay that is shaped like a horseshoe and is sheltered from the ocean. The beach is equipped with bathrooms and showers, and you can also find picnic tables here. When diving, you can find many beautiful fish, including parrotfish, blue surgeonfish and ghost crab.

White Beach, Fr. Boracay, Philippines

Location

You can find the beach if you get to the western part of Boracay, a small Philippine island located 315 km south of Manila. You can get here by ferry or boat taken from Caticlan Island.

What is the secret

The beach stretches for 4 km and is located on the quiet side of Boracay island, where there is almost no wind. The water here is like glass, smooth and still, which is great for those who love to dive and enjoy the delights of underwater life. Also along the beach there are a large number of hotels, restaurants and shops.

Anse Lazio beach, Fr.

Praslin, Seychelles

Location

The beach is located in the northwest of Praslin Island. You can get here by Air Seychelles flight from Mahe, and then take a local bus to get to Anse Boudin. From there, 15 minutes to Anse Lazio.

What is the secret

The beach stands out with granite boulders located along its edges. Most of the beaches here are protected from the ocean by a coral reef, and Anse Lazio is no exception. The shape of the beach resembles a crescent moon and along its entire length you can see growing tall palm trees and takamaki that cover the beach from others. Here you can see the sunset in a special way – that’s why some people come here to watch it.

Playa de Ses Illetes, ca. Formentera, Spain

Location

The island on which this beach is located lies 6 km from Ibiza. There is a ferry from there, so getting there is pretty easy. All year round it can also be reached by sea from Barcelona, Valencia and Denia, and in summer you can catch a direct ferry from Denia to Formentera.

What is the secret? Nearby there are several small hotels, as well as a large number of fish restaurants. It is also worth noting that in the northern part the beach is quite free, nudists usually relax here.

Paraiso Beach (Playa Paraiso), ca. Cayo Largo, Cuba

Location

The beach is located on the small resort island of Cayo Largo, which is part of Cuba. This island is located in the Caribbean Sea, more precisely, 160 km south of Havana.

What is the secret? Because of this, most hotels located in permitted areas offer a free shuttle service to the shore. The sea here is not deep and quite calm. The beach has umbrellas and a small bar.

Location: South of Lampedusa, the southernmost of the Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean, closer to Tunisia than to Sicily. There is a ferry from the island to Porto Empedocle near the administrative center of Agrigento in Sicily. There is also a year-round flight connection with Palermo and Catania in Sicily, direct flights from Rome and Milan in the summer.

Rabbit Beach (“rabbit beach”), about. Lampedusa, Italy

Location

You can get to the place where the beach is located by taxi or rent a car. After you arrive at the place, you will have to go down a rocky path to finally get to the beach.

What is the secret

The beach is located on the territory of a nature reserve. Some part of the beach is rocky, and fine white sand can be found along the sea line. It is worth noting that sea turtles lay their eggs here every spring. They do it in fine white sand, which is located on the eastern part of the beach. Baby turtles hatch in August. During this period, the beach attracts a large number of conservationists – they help the baby sea turtles safely reach the water.

Grace Bay Island Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Location

Providenciales is the main island of the Turks and Caicos archipelago. It is here that the Grace Bay beach is located, which is considered the main resort center of this island.
