If you’re a history buff and/or shutterbug like me, you’ll be in heaven. Absolutely worth the price of admission for both forts especially since the ticket is good for an entire week. Don’t miss this!

Awesome place to hang out. Worth paying the $5 to see the two forts. They’ll take you back 500 years.

The fort protected the island when it was known as the guardian of the new world with nearly half a century of military history that began with the Spanish conquistadores and ended with World War II.
Wow.. What a castle fort! Fun to climb the walls, get history of this Spanish fort from 1500s, and take in beautiful Atlantic Ocean breezes. Stop here and walk around. Great spot for kite flying.
On a sunny day come here in the late afternoon, around 4 or so, and spend a while lounging on the grass and watching kids fly kites. Great spot for photos. Buy a passion fruit sorbet from the vendor.
Historic landmark! Great view! This is a must visit if you’re in Old San Juan. Oh! Don’t miss the experience of flying a kite here!
Absolutely amazing & full of history. Not to mention free entry during National Park month 4/16-4/24/16). Go ahead & camp out on the fort’s beautiful large front lawn/entrance
Rich in history, El Morro is the perfect spot to explore with the family. Learn the military importance of the oldest fort in US territory. Don’t forget to bring your national park passport and kite!

Classic, must-see site for any visitor new to PR & interested in more then just Bacardi tours, beautiful beaches, & delicious eats! (not that there’s anything wrong with the previously mentioned 🙂
It can get windy in the Fort so hold on to your hats!! Oh, and please check out the bathroom on the plaza level. It has some of the best views of the ocean.
if you Love Castle, this is a Must See if your visiting the island! make this your #1 Priority one your ship docks! and take you cam, because you will take many pictures!
Castle provides a great backdrop to all the flying kites in the sky. Def stop by the sorbet vendor across the street! Passion fruit + coconut = winning combo.
Tiene una hermosa vista y sin duda es un “must” en San Juan! Sólo ponte mucho bloqueador si vas a caminar por el paseo del Morro.
One of the most beautiful places you’ll ever visit. Makes a good “first stop” since it’s so close to the airport. Free entrance on US Government holidays!
There’s a saying: “If you haven’t visited El Morro, you haven’t been to Puerto Rico.” Dating back to the 16th century, this fort is magnificent and historically significant. En savoir plus
Beautiful view of the ocean and insightful history. Very windy and great for flying kites. Simultaneously romantic, historic, and fun. Good for everyone.
The fort and grounds have incredible scenic views. Sunset is the best time to go, but midday would be great for a picnic.
Gorgeous old fort with incredible views, surrounded by a great grassy park full of picnics and kite flying.
Several free days every year – worth checking ahead in case you’ll be visiting around those times. Save $5 a person!
Awesome views of San Juan, Puerto Rico and the ocean! Much larger and older than St. Augustine’s fortress.
If u also plan on visiting San Cristobal Fort buy a combined ticket to save
Great place to come with the family. Good History and great view. Fly kites.
The castle closes at 6pm. Be sure to get there at least 30 minutes before 6pm. Sometimes there are very strong winds.
One of the best views in Puerto Rico! Some people even brought kites. A wonderful of the ocean.
Admission is free for kids 15 and under, $3 for adults, and $5 for ticket to both forts – Del Morro and San Cristobal
Do all of these. Long weekend in PR is best time to visit this place. Entry is free during long weekends
Must see! $3 admission and you will spend 2-3 hours taking in the ocean views and exporing the castle.
We walked from La Concha to El Morro. It was quite a walk, but totally doable with enough water and of you leave early enough, before it gets too hot.
our pass is good for multiple days so you can spread out your trip here and at Del Morro.
Tickets to either of the Old San Juan forts (El Morro and San Cristobal) gives you free entrance to the other for a week!
One of my favorite places in Old San Juan – great photo opportunities and great spot for sunsets – some fun facts En savoir plus
When you pay the fee to enter, it’s good at both forts for a week. You just have to keep your receipt.
One of my favorite places as a child! Grab a kite and enjoy of the gentle sea breeze. Be sure to try a “Piragua”!
Visiting during the day? Bring a Kite! Visiting at night? Enjoy the awesome star-gazing!
Don’t miss views over the cemetery on the northeast side.
The first lighthouse built in Puerto Rico, built in 1846 and exhibited a light using five parabolic reflectors. In 1876, a new octagonal iron tower was constructed atop the walls of the fort.
San Juan’s military structures were built by the Spaniards and are the oldest European constructions in the US. Built at the harbor’s entrance, El Morro (1539) has withstood several attacks.
If you are staying in PR for a few days, you can buy one pass for both El Morro and San Cristobal (the other fortress). Visit them on different days–the pass is good for both visits.
Very windy! Great grounds for flying kites! The fort is gorgeous!
Gives you a picture of how to live in the Spanish era in Old San Juan, Peurto Rico. Beautiful!
Great scenic site, even if you don’t want to pay to go in to the museum.
Views for miles! Beautiful fort in a gorgeous location.
Fascinante, lleno de historia, cuya información presentada en cada parte de la fortaleza con fotos. La tienda adentro tiene libros interesantes pero son demasiados de caros.
Go fly a kite! No really, this is an incredible place to put your kite piloting skills to a test or just stick around and see some unique kite designs
Very big fort. Lots of places to take pics.
They close at 6pm. It’s a pretty big fort so give yourself an hour or so to enjoy the views.

Great shop! We rented 2 nice, new bikes for the week (helmets included). This is the place to go. And the best way to get around the surrounding area (Condado, San Juan, etc). Many streets in the area have a green paved lane for bikes which makes it safe and easy. The staff here are super nice and willing to answer any tourist question.

The bikes mark provided were perfect for San Juan. I used it a ton over the week and a half and it was a fun smooth ride even over the cobble stones. Good shocks are key. Weird thing is almost no one bikes in SJ despite some sweet dedicated paths near the ocean. Drivers can be a little crazy but I hope more people start biking. Then again it was nice to have all the paths to myself.

self-registration at the US Embassy
Puerto Rico is a small country in the northern Caribbean. It is a clean, safe, tourist island visited by travelers from all over the world every year. Divers, windsurfers, family vacationers choose Puerto Rico for its endless white sand beaches, clear clear waters of the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea and the highest level of service. And recently, Puerto Rico has become the center of the gaming business in the Caribbean and invites nightlife lovers to numerous nightclubs, casinos and gambling establishments. The famous El Yunque nature reserve, many architectural and historical sights, including old defensive forts built by the Spaniards, are located on the island. The island is governed by the laws of America, and behind the scenes it is its 51 states, so a visa to Puerto Rico is issued at the US Embassy.
Features of registration
Russians need a visa to Puerto Rico, the US Embassy in Moscow is in charge of registration. Consular departments are located in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg.
The procedure for obtaining a visa to Puerto Rico consists of several stages:
- Registration on the official website of the Embassy.
- Filling out an online visa application. Upon completion of filling, you must print a confirmation with a barcode. https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ – fill out an online visa application.
- Payment of the consular fee. There are two options for payment – by bank card directly on the site, or by printed receipt at a bank branch.
- Appointment for an interview. For registration, it is necessary to enter the data of a foreign passport, the number from the completed application and the number of the paid receipt in a special form. After that, you can choose an available date and time for a visit and come on the appointed day with a full package of necessary documentation.
http://www.ustraveldocs. com/ru_ru/ru-niv-appointmentschedule.asp — sign up for an interview. A visa to Puerto Rico for Ukrainians is issued at the US Embassy located in Kyiv. The application procedure and the list of required documentation are the same as for Russian citizens.
Types of visas to the country and the necessary documentation for their issuance
The US Embassy for a trip to Puerto Rico opens short-term (non-immigrant from six months to a year) and long-term (immigrant from a year) visas for Russians, which, depending on the purpose of the visit, are divided into:
Visitor visa
This category is suitable for individuals who wish to make a tourist trip to Puerto Rico, visit relatives or friends living on the island, or travel on a business trip.
To obtain it, you should apply to the Embassy by submitting the following documents:
- Confirmation of financial security (bank statement, ownership, tax payments).
- Proof of purpose of travel:
- hotel booking;
- invitation from a citizen of Puerto Rico;
- an invitation from an organization in Puerto Rico.
- Certificate from work on wages, indicating the position and length of service of the applicant.
- Certificate from the police about the absence or presence of a criminal record.
Work Visa
Puerto Rico Short Term Work Visas (up to 1 year) are granted to applicants based on an approved petition submitted to Citizenship and Immigration Services by the applicant’s employer. You should contact the Embassy to submit documents after the applicant’s employer receives a notification of approval of the submitted petition.
Important! An approved petition does not guarantee a 100% visa.
This category of visas is suitable for:
- highly qualified specialists to perform narrowly focused work;
- workers for seasonal work;
- trainees;
- artists, athletes, cultural figures;
- family members of the applicant holding this category of visa.
For an interview at the Embassy, in addition to the main list of documents, you need to prepare:
- Approved petition number.
- Confirmation of qualifications (diplomas, certificates of completion of courses, etc.).
- Certificate from the place of work indicating the position and length of service.
- Work book.
Student visa
Opened for those who want to get an education in Puerto Rico. Before applying to the Embassy, you must obtain a document on official enrollment in one of the educational institutions of the island.
In addition to the interview, you should bring:
- Guaranteed return to Russia.
- Guarantees of financial solvency to pay tuition fees. In case the applicant is a minor or does not have sufficient personal funds, a sponsorship letter from the person who will pay for the trip and tuition.
- School certificate and other education documents (USE, TOEFL, etc. ).
Transit visa
If Puerto Rico is not the purpose of your trip, and here you only have a transfer, you must apply to the Embassy for a transit visa.
You will need:
- Proof of financial solvency (bank statements, tax payments).
- Certificate from work on wages, indicating the position, length of service and the period of vacation during which the trip is made.
- Ticket to the country of destination.
- Visa for the country of destination (if required).
Main list of documents
- Visa application. It is filled in on the website of the Embassy online.
- Foreign passport valid for more than six months after the end of the trip.
- Visa photo 5×5 cm.
- Appointment for an interview
Processing time and cost
The consular fee for a visa to Puerto Rico for citizens of Russia and Ukraine is 160 USD. The fee is paid in rubles, at the exchange rate on the day of payment. Payment is made before visiting the Embassy and is not refundable in case of refusal to open a visa. Children are not exempt from paying fees. Consideration of documents takes, as a rule, three working days. However, in some cases it can be up to a month. It is recommended to apply to the Embassy in advance – at least 3 months before the intended trip.
Challenges
Embassy staff take the verification of documents and interviews with applicants very seriously. The presence of a complete set of documentation is not a guarantee of opening a visa. Employees of the consular department pay more attention to answers to questions during an interview than to the documents provided. Their goal is to identify potential immigrants. When answering questions, you must convince the officer that your purpose corresponds to the declared visa category and you do not plan to stay in the country after the end of the allowed period.

Puerto Rico is a beautiful island nation. Top 9 Beaches in Puerto Rico for Snorkeling0001
Puerto Rico is a small but very picturesque country, a trip to which will give a lot of impressions to all vacationers. Moreover, tourists here are waiting not only for a relaxed beach holiday, but also for exciting excursions to historical and cultural attractions. This is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea, under the jurisdiction of the United States. Some even call it the 51 states. Here you will find a developed infrastructure, excellent service and many options for recreation. Independent travel to Puerto Rico is relatively inexpensive and very diverse. However, to enter the country you will need a US visa, which makes it difficult for tourists to travel here.
Cultural characteristics
The state bears the imprint of several cultures – Spanish, Caribbean and American. This is a great example of how different ethnic groups coexist harmoniously on a small land. In addition, the fate of this state is inextricably linked with the long struggle for the independence of the country, so here one can feel the desire for freedom and emancipation. The central cities and streets gravitate toward the American way of life, while in the countryside you will encounter a mixed and distinct Creole culture.
Top 3 interesting cities and attractions
The capital of Puerto Rico is . Here are recommended to visit the old town with the castle Castillo de San Felipe del Morro
,
San Jose Square, pigeon park and incredibly picturesque waterfront. The next destination is the island. Here you can see the most beautiful bioluminescent bay. If you are interested in the cultural heritage of the country, visit the port city – its center is literally dotted with old churches and other architectural monuments. For example, here is one of the oldest fire stations in the world and the amazing beauty of the Cathedral of Mary the Virgin of Guadalupe.
To get a complete picture of the country, a trip to the coral island Coolerbrita is recommended
– white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters will immerse you in a tropical paradise. Another idea for a trip is the caves of Kamuy
. They occupy the third line in the ranking of the largest cave systems on Earth – the length of the complex reaches 16 kilometers. And if you want to get acquainted with the unique nature of Puerto Rico, be sure to visit El Unco National Reserve
. Here you will find the pristine and untouched by civilization natural beauty of this island nation.
When is the best time to rest
The most favorable time for traveling to this country is from December to April. It is during these months that the water and air temperatures are as comfortable as possible, and the amount of rain is minimal. However, it is at this time that the peak of the tourist season falls, which leads to a sharp jump in prices for tours, hotels and an abundance of vacationers. Book hotels in advance. And trips in the low season are no less bright and intense – the average temperature throughout the year ranges from +22 to +28C.
Safety regulations
Puerto Rico is a safe and low crime destination. Attacks on tourists here are very rare, so safety advice is standard – to remain vigilant and prudent, especially at night. The only recommendation for those who rent a car is not to leave valuables in the car when getting out of it. They can attract the attention of intruders who will take advantage of the opportunity to break into the machine.

The head of state is the President of the United States. The head of government is the governor. The cabinet is appointed by the governor after consultation with the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico.
Language
Official language: Spanish, English

Puerto Rico
, or the Freely Associated State of Puerto Rico, is a small, beautiful, island country in the Atlantic Ocean.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a small island state, the distinguishing feature of which is that, having its own Constitution, it has not received full independence. The freely associated state of Puerto Rico (as it is officially called) is under the jurisdiction of the United States. The link between a small country and a superpower is citizenship, currency, and defense. And although Puerto Ricans are citizens, they are exempt from income taxes. And interestingly, the way of life on the island is not at all American; it is more like a little Europe. Probably because the Spaniards lived here for a long time. This historical fact has influenced the fact that almost all local residents speak two languages: English and Spanish.
The capital of Puerto Rico is the city of San Juan, which has about 440 thousand inhabitants. Watch a short video about San Juan de Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico, whose territory occupies about 9 thousand km 2, “sheltered” at the junction of the Lesser and Greater Antilles, of which it is located. The Atlantic Ocean washes the state from the north, and the Caribbean Sea from the south. The island on which the country is located bears the same name. In addition, several nearby islands adjoin the state territory of Puerto Rico. Its coastline stretches for 501 km.
Map of Puerto Rico
Across the Mona Strait in the west, from the northeast – the British Virgin Islands, and the southeastern border separates it from the Netherlands Antilles.
The ethnic composition of the indigenous population of Puerto Rico is quite homogeneous: Creoles live here – 81%, mulattos – 11%, Indians and Asians – 10%, blacks – 9%, etc.
Puerto Ricans who emigrated to the USA are used mainly for low-paid jobs, but due to high population density and unemployment, they do not seek to return to their homeland.
Flag of Puerto Rico – only side by side and together
The flag of the state of Puerto Rico alternates 5 horizontal stripes of red and white, respectively 3:2.
Puerto Rican flag
On the side of the flagpole there is an equilateral blue triangle, the base of which is equal to the width of the cloth.
In the center of the triangle is a white five-pointed star.
The state national flag of Puerto Rico, adopted in July 1952, is flown only together with the flag of its “curator” – the United States.
It is interesting that the “Statute of the Flag” does not specify the exact color shades in detail. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see flags that have different tones of the primary colors.
Standard of living
Puerto Rico has a fairly high standard of living compared to most other Caribbean islands, but it is still significantly lower than even the poorest US states. Unemployment is quite high, so many Puerto Ricans try to find work in the United States, while the rest are most often engaged in various types of temporary earnings.
Security
The security situation here is rather ambiguous. On the one hand, the overall level of violent crime here is quite low, and the areas frequented by tourists are quite safe and are under the protection of special police units. However, the poor areas of most large cities are noticeably criminalized and pose a certain danger to foreign tourists.
Do not openly display jewelry, expensive photo and video equipment, or the thickness of a wallet. Crowded areas should be avoided, as such places usually have a huge number of pickpockets. It is also not recommended to exchange money on the streets – the risk of facing fraud or outright robbery is extremely high. You should avoid visiting deserted shores alone and especially at night.
If you ask a Puerto Rican for directions to a certain place, the most common response is “follow me”. In most cases, such an escort has sincere intentions to take the tourist to the place he needs, but it should be borne in mind that in some cases this way you can get to the wrong place at all, or even be robbed. You should be especially careful with such guides at night and it is highly undesirable for women and individual travelers. When traveling by car, you should park in well-lit areas and take all valuables from the car with you.
Nudism
Nudism in public places is prohibited in Puerto Rico.
Electricity
Mains voltage is 110 V, 60 Hz (some hotels provide 220 V). Plugs are usually American style with two flat pins.
Units of measurement
The system of measures and weights is metric, but in many retail outlets in tourist areas, elements of the imperial system of measurement are often used along with it.
