Prepositions of location are very popular in Spanish:

A la izquierda de la estación está la farmacia. – To the left of the station is a pharmacy.

El coche está aparcado detrás del edificio. – The car is parked behind the building.

A la derecha hay una estantería donde puedes encontrar el libro. There is a bookshelf on the right where you can find (this) book.

Siempre escoge el asiento junto a la ventana. He always chooses a seat next to the window.

Prepositions and adverbs of place in Spanish with examples

Since it is almost impossible to build a coherent sentence without prepositions, studying them is indispensable. The article will talk about prepositions in Spanish , and more specifically, about prepositions for determining the location of an object.

Prepositions and adverbs of place in Spanish

Most prepositions and adverbs of place are used in conjunction with the preposition “de” followed by a noun. Pay attention to two things:

• the ending remains the same, which of course makes it easier to learn Spanish. For example:

Un cuaderno está en el armari o – The notebook is in the cupboard

• If the preposition de and the masculine article el go in a row, then del is used instead of de + el in Spanish. For example:

Una Mesa Está Delante de EL Armario – UNA Mesa Está Delante Del Armario ( table is CHALDOMS OF THE RIGHTS OF THE RIGHTS OU . Before studying this material, be sure to read the material on the verb Estar.

1) en – at (inside), at (meaning: on the street, on the wall)

• Estamos en la calle – We are standing on the street
• Los sombreros están en el armario – The hat is in the closet

2) sobre – on (in the meaning of horizontal surface )

3) encima de – above

• El espejo está encima de la cama – Mirror hanging over the bed
• La luna está encima de la montaña – Moon over the mountain

4) debajo de – under

• Un perro está debajo de la silla – The dog sits under the chair
• Los zapatos están debajo del armario – The shoes are under the closet

5) delante de – front, front

• ¿Está la mesa delante de la ventana? – The table in front of the window?
• El carro está delante del árbol – The car is standing in front of a tree

6) detrás de – behind, behind

• El carro está detrás de la casa – The car is behind the house
• La tienda está detrás del banco – The store is behind the bank

7) cerca de – nearby, next to ( means 5-10 minutes walk )

• Mi casa está cerca de la escuela – My house is near the school
• Tu garaje está cerca del parque – Your garage near the park

8) al lado de – next to ( implies close proximity to )

• Mi casa está al lado de la escuela – My house is near the school ( equivalent example with 2 cerca 1 )
• Andrés está al lado de Lora – Andrei sits next to / close to Laura ( cerca de no longer suitable )

9) lejos de – far from

• Barcelona está lejos de Moscú – Barcelona is far from Moscow
• El río está lejos del bosque – The river is far from the forest

10) a la izquierda de – to the left of

• El cuadro está a la izquierda de la ventana – Painting to the left of the window
• Teatro está a la izquierda de la cafetería – Theater to the left of cafe

11) a la derecha de – to the right of

• Las sillas están a la derecha del sofá – Chairs to the right of the sofa
• La farmacia está a la derecha del supermercado – Pharmacy to the right of the supermarket

12) enfrente de – in front of

• El carro está enfrente de la iglesia – The car is in front of the church
• La librería está enfrente del museo – The bookstore is in front of the museum

13) alrededor de – around something

• Los arboles están alrededor de la casa – Trees stand around the house
• La gente está alrededor de la estatua – People stand around the statue

14) fuera de – outside of something

• ¿Quién está fuera de la casa? Who is outside the house?
• Él está fuera del carro – He stands outside the car

15) dentro de – inside something

• La cocina está dentro del restaurante – Kitchen inside a restaurant
• La felicidad está dentro de ti – Happiness is inside you

Remember that if there is no noun after adverb , de is not needed.
