The most interesting places in San Juan.

To get to know all the interesting objects and sights of Puerto Rico, while relaxing in San Juan, you may not have even a week. But there is a “top list” list that will help you get an impression of this amazing island in a very short time.

    1. El Viguia mountain peak and the city of Ponce. The mountain itself is located just north of the city of Ponce. You can get here very quickly by regular bus from San Juan. In addition to exploring the mountain itself and its amazing landscape, it is worth looking into several interesting places to visit at its foot, in the city itself. For example, in the Castillo Serrale Museum. Then see the Cathedral Basilica of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, take pictures at the Plaza of Delight, stroll through the park of Bombay. Here you will also find a collection of exhibits of the Ponce History Museum, where you will learn how the settlement was built and developed, as well as see exhibits that witnessed its glorious history. Art connoisseurs will find a lot of interesting things for themselves in the local Puerto Rico Music Museum and the Ponce City Art Museum. In addition, ten-story towers are located next to the mountain peak of El Vigia, from the observation decks of which you can see almost the entire panorama of the city of Ponce and the Caribbean Sea.

    2. Saint Christopher Castle. This is one of the largest forts in Puerto Rico, which was built in ancient times by the Spaniards and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List at the end of the last century. The castle covers an area of 27 acres of land and rises almost 150 meters above sea level. At the beginning of the 17th century, a small redoubt was built here to protect the capital of the island, the city of San Juan, from enemy raids. The construction of the Castle St. Christopher itself began only in the middle of the 18th century. Today you will be able to appreciate the unique architectural model of Saint Christopher Castle, which is represented by a multi-level network of fortifications. It makes sense to take a tour with an audio guide (in Spanish or English) and learn about the vast system of tunnels that connect different parts of the fort, see the guardhouse, visit the artillery observation post that the American army built in the middle of the last century. You will be impressed by the local exhibits – 200-pound mortar shells and water tanks under the main square, holding more than 700,000 gallons of rainwater and can keep the garrison alive for a year. The castle also has an exhibition of military clothing from different years. By the way, it was in the castle of St. Christopher that some scenes of the famous Hollywood blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” were filmed.

    3. Bacardi rum factory and its cultural centre. This property is located in the suburbs of Cataño, very close to San Juan. The Bacardi factory today is one of the most significant factories in the world that specialize in the production of rum. The Bacardi company was founded in 1862 by the famous Don Facundo Bacardi in the city of Santiago de Cuba, but three quarters of a century later it was completely recreated in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Today, numerous visitors to the factory can fully enjoy an interactive journey into the history of the facility, get to know the origin of the brand itself, and also learn about the features of family production. Here you can see the process of rum production itself, which is clearly an educational and entertaining event at the same time. Typically, a tour of the factory includes an informative short film, as well as a demonstration of how rum-based cocktails are made. You can immediately taste the samples in a special impromptu tropical pavilion. The light tropical breeze here will undoubtedly remind you of the very symbol of Bacardi – a bat. It is a symbol of health, good luck and family. There is also a small shop at the factory where you can buy all kinds of souvenirs and, of course, real rum.

    4. Mosquito Bay. This untouched corner of nature is simply impossible to ignore when relaxing in San Juan. Mosquito is the largest wildlife sanctuary in the Caribbean. This is perhaps the most intriguing and amazing place in all of Puerto Rico. Geographically, it is located on the small island of Vieques. To date, there are only five bioluminescent bays on the planet. Two – in Australia, and as many as three in Puerto Rico. Mosquito Bay is the largest and most famous of them. The radiance of the water, which you will see here with your own eyes, is associated with the presence in the water of some microscopic organisms – dinoflagellates, of which there are countless. They produce this mysterious blue-green glow. All it takes is a little splash of water. By the way, in one gallon of water there are more than 700 thousand of these dinoflagellates. The very location of this bay is ideal for the life of plankton. On the shore of the bay you will see mangrove trees. Microorganisms feed on their leaves. Dinoflagellates are quite sensitive to chemicals. They can die not only from waste fuel or engine oil, but even from various repellents or suntan creams. Be very careful in this area. And remember that during the full moon it is better not to go here, as microorganisms will not be so noticeable.

    5. Mona Islands. It is located in the strait of the same name in the Caribbean Sea, between Haiti and Puerto Rico. It covers an area of just over 50 square kilometers. The highest point of the island is 95 meters and it is completely uninhabited. And it became famous and attractive for tourists after the treasures of William Jennings, an English pirate and navigator, were found here in 1939. Mona Island today attracts nature lovers from all over the world. Here is a unique flora and fauna, somewhat similar to that of the Galapagos Islands. Today, a small airport operates on the island, but it is used mainly by the US Coast Guard. You are better off getting to Mona on a regular boat, many of which ply in this direction, carrying out tourist transportation.

Old City Tour: Culture and History of the City

The tour consists of a 4 hour tour (part walking, part driving) with Russian speaking guide . The tour program includes a visit to the historical sights of Old San Juan and a visit to one of the ancient fortresses (El Morro fortress). The driver meets guests at the hotel half an hour before the start of the tour, and the guide – in the Old City.

Old City: During the tour you will get acquainted with San Juan, founded by the Spanish colonizers in 1521. It is not only the oldest city in the US founded by Europeans, but also almost the oldest European city in Latin America. Unlike neighboring islands, old San Juan has been perfectly preserved in its original form, thanks to the efforts of local cultural figures who have achieved a ban on new buildings and the fact that any restoration work, even in private mansions, must be coordinated with the Institute of Culture. You will have a unique opportunity to feel the charm of the old world in the Spanish colony of the past centuries and see magnificent examples of colonial architecture. Among the historical attractions are the fortress of San Felipe del Morro (Fort San Felipe del Morro), the fortress of San Cristobal (Fort San Cristobal), the Catholic Cathedral of La Catedral (La Сatedral de San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico), where the first Governor is buried Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce De Leon, and La Fortaleza, the oldest active residence and government house in the New World, where the current governor works.

Old City Tour: Culture and History of the City and national cuisine

The tour consists of a 6-hour excursion (walking, car meet and greet) with an English-speaking guide. The tour program includes a tour of the historical sights of Old San Juan and a visit to one of the ancient fortresses (El Morro Fortress), as well as tasting national cuisine and local beers. The driver meets guests at the hotel half an hour before the start of the tour, and the guide – in the Old City.

The rich cuisine of Puerto Rico is a bizarre mixture of culinary traditions of the Taino Indians, faraway Africa and Spanish heritage. Rich stews (asopao), ritually prepared (pasteles) and delicious (mofongo) – all these dishes will be remembered for a long time for their delicious, and for some reason homely, aroma.

Old City Tour: Culture and History of the City, rum tasting, cockfighting

The tour consists of a 7-hour tour (partly walking, partly driving) with an English-speaking guide. The tour program includes a visit to the historical sights of Old San Juan and a visit to one of the ancient fortresses (El Morro Fortress), rum tasting, visiting cockfights. The driver meets guests at the hotel half an hour before the start of the tour, and the guide – in the Old City.

The tour begins with a 3-hour walking tour of the Old City, including a visit to the ancient fortress of El Morro. We then invite guests to a local bohemian bar where the bar owner and rum connoisseur will host a tasting of Puerto Rico’s most vibrant rums, including the newly released (legal) pitorro moonshine. During a bartender-led tasting, guests will learn how to prepare one of the classic rum cocktails.

The cockfighting club we are heading to is located in the city center and is equipped as a modern sports arena, but the world of cockfighting itself is a long tradition, the foundation of which was laid back in the 16th century. Puerto Rico is the only U.S. territory where the sport is legal, and there are several clubs in each of the island’s seventy-eight municipalities. There are more than 120 of them on the whole island. Bets on roosters range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars; it is difficult to describe the excitement of the crowd surrounding the arena, where handsome roosters fight to the last. Each battle lasts about 15 minutes and victory is determined by the rules that have been established for centuries. Cockfighting on the island is called the sport of gentlemen: both because it is played mainly by men, and due to the fact that all bets are oral and are not recorded anywhere, and all calculations between players are based on parole. However, given the level of emotion surrounding this traditional sport, it’s hard to imagine a fool wanting to cheat in such an inappropriate place.

ATTENTION! The fight may end with the rooster running away, lying down and not rising, or simply being pecked to death by the opponent. This sport is ancient and reflects the basic principle of the animal world, i.e. the strongest wins.

El Yunque Rainforest & Bioluminescent Bay Tour

This tour includes an 8-hour trip, a guided tour of the El Yunque Rainforest and a night kayak excursion to a unique, unforgettable bioluminescent bay (kayaking). The price includes transport, driver, English-speaking guide. Dinner is paid separately.

El Yunque Rainforest, shortlisted for the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is known for its waterfalls and intricate hiking trails. The El Yunque forest rises to almost 3500 meters above sea level and receives over 500 mm of precipitation per year. You will be able to see the richness of the flora and fauna of the rainforest and admire the extraordinary plants and animals. You will see in its original form all the diversity of the tropical flora of the Caribbean: thousand-year-old trees, exotic plants with inflorescences of all colors of the rainbow, tropical flowers and spreading lianas.

The rich flora and fauna of El Yunque includes the rarest Puerto Rican green parrot, unique dwarf orchids and many varieties of ferns. More than 400 species of tropical trees grow here, including tabonuco palms, ausubo trees and over 50 species of orchids. Hundreds of small waterfalls fall within the park. Closer to the tops of the mountains stretches a strip of rain forests, also known as “dwarf forest”, where trees, pressed to the ground by strong winds, rarely grow more than 6 meters. Throughout the forest, there are many hiking trails with a total length of more than 40 km.

The Puerto Rican frogs known as “coca” living here are a symbol of the island due to their melodic arias, although their presence can only be felt by sound and few tourists are lucky enough to see them – the largest “coca” is no more than 5 centimeters in length. Be sure to ask your guide to teach you how to recognize this tiny tropical frog’s song.

Bioluminescent bay kayaking is an unforgettable sight that can only be seen in 5 lagoons in the world, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them. Such an extraordinary natural phenomenon is found in the east of Puerto Rico, in the town of Las Croabas. The lagoon, surrounded by mangroves, is home to a special kind of zooplankton that glows when in contact with moving objects. As if by the will of an unknown wizard, your hand, lowered into the water, is outlined by silvery lights. On a moonless night, when the glow of plankton in the water is especially bright, you can see the outlines of fish swimming under you. The trip does not require special sportswear and is accompanied by specially trained guides in accordance with all water safety rules. The hosts will teach guests the basics of kayaking and help beginners along the way (the swim to the bay takes about 25-30 minutes one way).

El Yunque Rainforest Tour, Heliconia Tropical Garden and Shopping

The tour includes an 8-hour trip with an English-speaking guide, including a visit to the El Yunque Rainforest, check-in to a private Heliconia Tropical Garden, and optional shopping for the rest of the time in the center of shops from the manufacturer.

The price includes transport, driver and English-speaking guide (lunch is paid separately).

Garden of Tropical Flowers: A visit to the heliconium garden, created by a Hungarian gardener over many years of painstaking work on his own estate, spread out in the middle of a tropical forest, is remembered for a lifetime. This really fabulous place with amazing tropical flowers is not visited by ordinary tourists. Includes an introduction to the typical fruits, vegetables and root crops on which the local cuisine is based.

El Yunque Rainforest, shortlisted for the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is known for its waterfalls and intricate hiking trails. The Río Camuy National Park is famous for its fantastic limestone formations and many caves, making it one of the best places in the world for caving. More than 200 caves have been discovered in this region, some of which have a colossal interior volume. On the walls of one of the caves, 42 petroglyphs of the Taino Indians, the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean, were found, destroyed by the Spanish conquerors. These caves formed in the bed of the Camuy River (Rio Camuy) over a million years ago, and are one of the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere. The impressive cave complex is equipped for a safe visit. Visitors will be led through the 50-meter Cueva Clara Cave, adorned with crystalline stalactites and stalagmites. Ponce – a major port and second largest city of Puerto Rico – located in the southern part of the island, between the mountains of the Central Cordillera and the Caribbean coast. The city, often referred to as La Perla del Sur (“Pearl of the South”), was founded by Spanish settlers in 1692 year. Today, the city center – its cozy squares, churches, elaborately decorated colonial houses and graceful fountains of the colonial period – is considered a national historical treasure.

Ponce’s first fiddle is the majestic Cathedral of our Lady of Guadeloupe, which rises above the urban landscape in Plaza las Delicias (Plaza of Delights). Directly behind the cathedral, on the square, is the building of the fire station (Parque de Bombas). It is one of the most striking pieces of architecture in Puerto Rico and is even considered by some to be the most easily recognizable symbol of the island. For many years, the building housed the central fire station, and now it houses a historical museum. From 19’84 building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
