There’s an intimate wine bar in Rice Village, tucked away above what was once one of Houston’s hottest restaurants.

The recently opened Lees Den from longtime restaurateur Benjy Levit is an intimate hideaway on the second level of Local Foods Market in what was once a lounge above the former Benjy’s, 2424 Dunstan. The 1,000-square-foot space can be entered from the ground floor Local Foods Market, but it also has its own speakeasy entrance on the side.

What’s inside? Designed by Brittany Vaughan of Garnish Designs, Lees Den features light woods and chartreuse green velvet-covered seating meant to evoke a serene, tropical tree house for 60 guests that includes a covered patio. Levit decided to make good use of the space after Benjy’s closed during the pandemic and never reopened; instead the restaurant space was transformed into a larger footprint for the adjacent Local Foods that was renamed Local Foods Market.

Lees Den (a play on Levit’s mother’s name and a wine term) offers more than 250 wines, including many by the glass, along with a menu of snacks, small plates and larger entrees. The wine bar is under the direction of general manager and wine director Chrisanna Shewbart and the food is from executive chef Maria Gonzalez.

On the menu: Pistachio whipped goat cheese with date jam and flatbread; spinach dip with hearts of palm and tortilla chips; sesame ginger meatballs; bread and butter with smoked trout roe; bigeye tuna sashimi; black rice arancini; steak and potato puree with red wine reduction; and “midnight pasta” with tomato pomodoro, basil, Calabrian chile, grilled olives and parmesan. Cocktails too, and wines by the glass including rose, orange wine, and bubbles. Additional wines are available from the Local Foods wine shop with no corkage fee.

Lees Den will be open Thursday through Saturday 4 to 10 p.m. Reservations are suggested but walk-ins accepted.

• Everything we ordered was fantastic! Truly a 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 meal. I forget the name of the items we had and would not do it justice to just describe it as is, but everything we ate was superb!

• Crunchy chicken & Mom’s cake are absolutely amazing!!! The warm & moist chocolate cake psired with the icy Mwxican Vanilla ucy ice cream is to die for! The Kale & peach salad was tasty too!

• One of Houston’s BEST happy hour spots! Great food, great drinks, great rooftop deck & even better service! Get the Mom’s Chocolate Cake. ..it is the bomb.com!

• The off-menu lamb chorizo special is awesome! Ask for it, what do you have to lose?

• Shrimp and grits are delicious. Also, you can always ask for more of the biscuits.

• Try the BBQ pizza and pot stickers. These happy hour appetizers are $6 along with cocktails. Blood orange margaritas are nice.

• The Brussel sprout appetizer is an original twist on the classic dish. Not necessarily for sprout beginners, though.

• Go to the lounge during Happy Hour and enjoy great appetizers and drink specials. Their potstickers are amazing – better than any Chinese restaurant for sure.

• Pirate-style free popcorn was an interesting twist! The salmon was a very solid lunch choice.

• Had the saffron seafood risotto. Absolutely lovely. Great place to try something a little different. Chocolate Cake was soooo good.

• Excellent desserts – blood orange sorbet was fantastic, and mom’s chocolate cake was lovely. Try the blood orange margarita.

• Head all the way upstairs to the patio. It may be cozy, but it gives a wonderful view of the Rice area while sipping on a blood orange margarita.

• The steak and eggs is really something special. One of the tastiest cuts of meat in town!

• Creative specials. Brussels sprouts were creative appetizer. Pork shank and grouper were delicious.

• One of the best happy hours in Houston!!

• The shrimp and grits are excellent and compare favorably with the best in town.

• Kids menu is very good. Very good to share. Loved it ❤️👍🏻.

• The Cornflake Crusted Gulf Shrimp & the Red Mule will do wonders for your pallet!

• The halibut was great! Sat at the bar, service was excellent, super friendly! Highly recommend.

• Awesome happy hour with creative cocktails and delicious appetizers.

• Good spot to go on a Sunday, sit upstairs indoors or outdoors on the deck.

• Lemon drop martinis are delicious! As are the happy hour pizzas 🙂
