North Carolina has a lot of great places to play golf in the winter but there are some times when it’s just not possible. So what are you to do when you want to play golf in the winter but can’t because of the North Carolina weather? You go to a great winter golf destination!

How to find a winter golf destination?

Think areas with warm weather! Here in North Carolina our winters can be unpredictable so you want to think of a destination that has pretty consistent temperatures during the winter. You also want to think of places that don’t get a lot of snow.

There are tons of them but some of the best winter golf destinations include:

Orlando, Florida

Florida has great weather during the winter and you don’t have to worry about snow. The Orlando area also has many other attractions which makes for a great winter getaway. You can enjoy a round of golf and then spend some time at one of their many amusement parks. The area also boasts of many great golf courses including the Championship Course at Bay Hill Club & Lodge and Waldorf Astoria Golf Club.

San Diego, California

Southern California also has great weather during the winter and the San Diego area has tons of great golf courses, making it a great winter golf destination. San Diego is also close to Los Angelas or Tijuana which are big tourist destinations. They have many golf course choices including the South Course at Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course and Maderas Golf Club.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Arizona winters are great for getting in a round of golf. The Scottsdale area also offers a lot of things for visitors and vacationers. The area has many different golf courses with views that you can’t get many other places including Saguara Course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club and the Monument Course at Troon North Golf Club.

Hilton Head, South Carolina

You don’t have to go far for this one! Even though Hilton Head isn’t that far from home, the weather there is a lot more conducive to winter golf. Hilton Head isn’t nearly as busy during the winter which makes it a great time to get in a round of golf at one of their many different golf courses. They have many different options including Atlantic Dunes at Sea Pines Resort and Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.

Miami, Florida

You can’t get much better winter weather wise than Miami! There is so much to do in this area that it would make a great winter vacation destination. The area boasts of many different golf courses including Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne and Soffer Course at Turnberry Isle Country Club.

Tucson, Arizona

Tucson doesn’t have quite as many golf courses as Scottsdale but it definitely has top quality courses. The area also has tons of hiking trails and parks that would make it a great winter destination. Tucson has many different golf courses including Sonoron Course at Omni Tucson National Golf Resort and Canyon Course at Ventana Canyon.

It’s looking like a long winter wonderland for golfers stuck in Northern climates.

Already dreaming of an escape to find the sun?

It will cost you. Not everybody has the means to tee it up on a Caribbean or Hawaiian island. Most Americans don’t even own a passport. That’s not a problem in Puerto Rico (although cost certainly is).

If you can’t afford the airfare to some dreamy tropical paradise, all is not lost. You can find plenty of golf courses open south of the Mason-Dixon Line and on the west coast. The 10 best winter golf destinations in the continental United States have golf courses for any budget, not to mention various lodging from luxurious to basic. Ready to plan an escape? Here are some of your best options:

1. Scottsdale, Arizona

What to expect: Scottsdale edges out California’s best. Most of its desert designs are resort friendly with wide fairways, although you’ll still lose balls to the cacti in the arroyos. Scottsdale’s modern restaurant and shopping districts, packed with bars, attract a younger crowd than SoCal’s Coachella Valley, fostering a more energetic vibe. There’s a much better sports scene nearby, too, with the Phoenix Suns (NBA), the Arizona Coyotes (NHL) and the Fiesta Bowl followed by spring training in the Cactus League. The desert sunsets never get old, either.

What to expect: Palm Springs might be the most famous of the nine cities in the Coachella Valley, but all of them (Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, etc.) have restaurants, resorts, festivals, shopping and courses worth exploring. The surrounding desert and mountains provide a beautiful backdrop. The main drawback is most of the courses are surrounded by housing developments. For a change of pace, you can ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to an elevation of 8,500 feet to hike in the snow.

3. San Diego, Orange County

What to expect: The worlds of Orange County (south of L.A.) and San Diego feel dramatically different, but both are loaded with bucket-list golf. Orange County reflects the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, while San Diego has the surfer “just chill, dude” mentality. The major downsides are the traffic jams and California sticker shock.

What to expect: Most of the best clubs are hidden behind the gates of private communities. Other good options, like Naples Grande, require a stay at a resort for access, so don’t delay in making plans. Tee times at the best public golf courses in Naples fill up fast when the snowbirds land. It’s not always beach weather. Yet you wouldn’t know it by all the Michiganders and Ohioans in shorts splashing in the waves off the Gulf of Mexico.

What to expect: Yes, the land of Mickey Mouse is overrun every winter by families and tourists. Considering the deep roster of courses, golfers also get a seat at the table. There plenty of resorts we haven’t even mentioned yet — the 54-hole Reunion Resort, the 36-hole Orange Lake Resort (plus two executive nine holers), the three (and a half) Disney courses, and the 54-hole Streamsong Resort, which is 90 minutes south in the middle of nowhere. What to expect: Everything is hotter in south Florida — the forecast, the night clubs, the wardrobes on South Beach. Its golf scene ranges from a classic Donald Ross at the Biltmore in Coral Gables, to the legendary Blue Monster, which hosted the PGA TOUR from 1962 to 2016. With five courses, PGA National is one of golf’s largest resorts, led by the famous Bear Trap on the Champion course. The Breakers Palm Beach is one of the game’s most luxurious and most historic resorts. Its Ocean course is the oldest course in Florida. The Palm Beach par 3 course provides the best public golf right on the ocean in the region at an affordable price.

8. Mississippi/Florida/Alabama Gulf Coast

What to expect: The sugar-white sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico are the attraction. Sections of the Gulf Coast are affectionately called the “Redneck Riviera,” a haven of high rises, spring breakers, T-shirt shops, crab shacks and bars. Don’t let the nickname scare you off. If you lean toward luxury, there are pockets of it (the WaterColor Inn & Resort for example). Several courses, especially Fallen Oak and Kiva Dunes, rank among the best in the country.

9. Tucson, Arizona

Premier courses: Sonoran Course and Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson National Resort; Mountain Course and Canyon Course at Ventana Canyon; Starr Pass Golf Club; and The Golf Club at Dove Mountain.

What to expect: Tucson doesn’t have the sheer volume of courses as Scottsdale, but it’s got the quality on top to compete. The Dove Mountain course by Jack Nicklaus used to host the World Golf Championships-World Match Play event. Although the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour events packed up and left, Tucson remains a fun college town, home to the University of Arizona Wildcats. Parks and trails surround the city, winding through the Sonoran Desert and canyons of the Santa Catalinas Mountains.

10. Hilton Head Island, S.C.

What to expect: Marshes and oaks draped in Spanish moss define the courses of the Lowcountry. Weather-wise and turf-wise, conditions aren’t as good as high season in the spring and fall, but the island still delivers arguably the best winter weather of any golf destination in the Carolinas (including Myrtle Beach and Kiawah Island in South Carolina, and Pinehurst in North Carolina). Crossing the bridge back into Bluffton, golfers will find more memorable places to play: Old South Golf Links, Hilton Head National and the celebrated May River Golf Club.

Winter Destinations 1: Florida – OnCore Golf

If you live in the land of ice and snow from November to March, you deserve a winter golf trip. However, there is nothing worse than leaving for rainy-cool to rainy-cold weather. If you’re buying a breather from the cold, go all the way to the end. We’ve put together a list of popular, fun, warm sunny places that are guaranteed to melt the frost in your limbs, joints and heart and guide you towards spring. First up is Florida.

If we break the solar state into segments, we get six separate areas that deserve attention. From the Panhandle in the Northwest to the three unique cultures of the East Coast, the Magical Middle and the West Coast, Florida means a lot to so many people. Let’s be honest: when you go to the tropics, you want more than golf. For this reason, we have removed two of our favorite golf destinations from this list. World Woods and Streamsong are spectacular golfing destinations, but each requires a trip to get to what’s going on.

Choose the location that best suits your personality and needs. With that in mind, let’s get down to business! Is it Florida? Those in Tallahassee may shake their heads no, but it has an FLA zip code (18 of them to be exact). To the west of the state capital, about 2 hours away, is Miramar Beach. Situated on a spit of idyllic coastal land, Florida MB is home to the Sandestin Resort. All those kids love this place during spring break, but you’ll love the chance to get away from the snowmen here. With 4 golf courses to choose from, variety will spice up your southern hit.

We chose Sawgrass because of its 36 holes on site, including the world famous TPC course and its par 17 island green. The resorts and courses in the Jax Beach area are very similar to each other, and we wanted a place that had several courses, each of which was its own. When you watch the Players Championship every March, you not only tell your friends that you scored on every hole, but also remember the holes at Valley Course.

Finding the perfect spot is a lot harder than Jax Beaches. We considered Orange County National and Shingle Creek but opted for a place with a little more golf and also a little more fun. Grand Cyparis is also very close to the land of the famous mouse, if theme parks are your thing. However, you won’t miss any of these three opportunities.

Dayton Beach is always a little edgier than other parts of the FLA, it’s super-cool golf, motorcycles, space travel and the international headquarters of the LPGA. There are no clean golf resorts in the area, but that’s okay. Gets you up and about to see a bit of the region. For golf, we chose the LPGA International club. Built for the game’s top pros, headquartered on site and world famous Daytona Speedway right across the fairways.

How do I cancel access to the 5 golf courses on site? No, you can’t, you can’t and you won’t. Every spring the PGA National hosts the Honda Classic during the Florida Swing on the PGA Tour, no small task. If the best in the world come here in search of a livelihood, this is proof of that. After you complete the course of the championship, four more courses await you, differing in layout, tasks and scale of fun. If you need to be in Miami, go to Turnberry. Apart from this requirement, West Palm will not harm you.

Fort Myers can be tricky when you first visit. There is, of course, the city itself. There is also the island of Sanidbel, connected to the mainland by a long bridge or many boats. Like Daytona Beach, you won’t find multiple golf courses on your property, so choose a location that’s closer to the water, the action, or golf. Fiddlesticks, Estero, and Old Corkscrew are some of the toughest trails in coastal southwest Florida. With the number of northerners choosing to retire in the region, there are many more courses to suit your game and your budget. For the night we went to Sanibel harbor. Still mainland but right on h3O.
