#11 Finca Victoria It opened in 2021, billed as the first-ever Ayurvedic retreat in the Caribbean. But this Vieques retreat is far more than that: it’s a creative, eclectic, fun boutique hotel that’s quickly become a main draw for the island of Vieques.

Just about every one of the 12 rooms here is different. Some are bright and airy with ocean views. Others are filled with artwork and vintage furniture. And then there is the “Invisible House” designed by Sylvia Demarco, a remarkable design with two-way mirrors, vast windows and an asymmetrical look. Plainly, there is no hotel like this in Puerto Rico (it’s even fully vegan).

The property is massive and filled with things to do.

#12 Caribe Hilton What if you want to take your family to experience San Juan? A boutique hotel won’t do. Nor will some of the more business-focused high-rise hotels in the capital. When it comes to families, the iconic Caribe Hilton is the place. There’s the massive pool complex at the center, the endless amenities, the on-site Morton’s and Starbucks, the 17 acres of tropical gardens. This was the first Hilton outside of the continental United States, and it still has the feel of a special hotel. A recent renovation has helped take the classic look of the hotel into the modern age. What hasn’t changed? The excellent private beach, the infinite energy and, well, the famous Piña Coladas.

#13 Palacio Provincial The newest boutique hotel in Old San Juan is actually set in a two-century-old building that once housed a diplomatic office. There are 43 rooms and suites with high ceilings, street side views of the historic town and a fantastic rooftop deck. The town square here is the Consular Restaurant and Bar (in keeping with the diplomatic history), home to a great brunch, delicious cocktails and even an on-site pizza oven.

It’s the primary place to stay if you want to experience Culebra.

#14 Club Seaborne The tiny island of Culebra is still very much a mystery for most travelers. It’s home to what’s billed as one of the best beaches anywhere in the Caribbean, Playa Flamenco (and yes, it is that good), but very few travelers have ever actually visited, with the vast majority of visitors being visitors from mainland Puerto Rico. Accordingly, there are very few places to stay outside of vacation rentals. Enter Club Seaborne, a clean, lovable, 12-room hotel with terrific, warm staff and a great daily breakfast. There’s also a great pool and waterspouts on offer.

Wow is the operative term here.

#15 El Blok The first thing you say when you see El Blok is “wow.” The look is that striking, thanks to a marvelous design by award-winning architect Natanial Fuster. This adults-only hotel in Vieques has 30 rooms across four categories: Estandar, simpler rooms with amazing balcony views; Esquina, with double balconies and massive floor-to-ceiling windows; Solana, which means private terraces and balconies; and El Doble, with queen beds and aimed at couples or groups. The story here, though, is the scene, from the delectable Placita restaurant to the ultra-cool rooftop, home to some of the best views on Vieques.

#16 O:live Boutique Hotel The O:live that started at all, and still going strong in its location perched above the Condado Lagoon. The O:live has 15 rooms, some smaller, some larger with large indoor-outdoor decks with tubs, all with lovely little touches and sleek bathrooms. The biggest draw here is the rooftop, a sceney, energetic roof deck with marvelous views of the lagoon.

#17 Condado Ocean Club This adults-only high-rise has some seriously stylish rooms. In fact, every one of the 96 units here has floor-to-ceiling windows with views of San Juan’s varying shades of blue — either the lagoon or the Atlantic. The look of the rooms and the hotel is bright and crisp, white and aquamarine, almost an amalgam of Puerto Rico and the Aegean. The vibe is fun and cool. That’s particularly true at the rooftop infinity pool deck where there’s poolside service til midnight and the weekends are filled with the sounds of the hottest DJs. There is also a buzzy beach bar called Sandbox, one of the few waterside hotspots in Condado.

#18 Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino If you’re in Puerto Rico for a major meeting, chances are this is where you should be staying. It’s directly across the street from the Puerto Rico Convention Center, with 503 solid if unspectacular rooms and a well-run, business-focused ambience. But as you dig deeper, you realize this is more than just a very convenient business hotel. There’s a great rooftop pool deck; a solid lobby bar and sushi bar; and a terrific Texas de Brazil Churrascaria. It’s the kind of convention hotel you’re more than happy to retire to at the end of a long day of confidence sessions. Even better? The new Distrito T-Mobile, a multifaceted entertainment and culinary destination, is just across the road.

#19 La Concha a Renaissance Resort It’s one of the more unsung Marriott brands: Renaissance. But in the Caribbean, Renaissance actually has a rather interesting portfolio of properties, from Aruba to Curacao to St Croix. And then there’s La Concha, the 483-room hotel in the heart of Condado. You know what? There is just something fun about this hotel. There is an energy that pervades the property, whether you’re in the always-bustling lobby bar, the casino or La Marina, the semi-secret adults-only beach spot. Much of that is due to the unique design of the hotel, which was first built back in 1958, the brainchild of star Puerto Rican architects Osvaldo Toro and Miguel Ferrer.

#20 The Royal Sonesta San Juan Sonesta is in the mist of a new expansion push in the Caribbean, one that began early last year with the debut of the Royal Sonesta San Juan, its first resort on the island in the home of the former InterContinental in Isla Verde. The Sonesta has just under 400 rooms, with all the amenities you’re looking for (including the only Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Puerto Rico) and a plum perch on the intoxicating sands of Isla Verde Beach.
