Caja de Muerto Island | Vámonos Tours
Tentative opening for our island tour bookings may begin in December 2021. Alternatively, contact us to book a full day or multi-day excursion with us or visit our www.touroldsanjuan.com page.
“Caja de Muerto” Island (Coffin Island) is located in southern Puerto Rico off the coast of Ponce (only 8 miles away). This island is only 1/2 mile in width (at the widest part) and 1 1/2 miles in length. It offers many things such as a lighthouse, an old hidden pirate cave, a few hiking trails, and gorgeous beaches. The whole island is also a well-protected natural reserve. Many believe that it got its name because it resembles someone lying down as in a coffin when seen from a distance. Others believe its name derives from a legendary coffin found inside the island’s cave.
Old Lighthouse
The hiking trails on the island take you among other places to the old lighthouse, which has a wonderful platform for a perfect view of the island. This platform is located right on top of the Almeida Cave. You cannot go inside the lighthouse, but the trek to the platform is well worth the view.
The Legend and the Cave
The legend that surrounds this island has to do with a pirate named José Almeida. He once fell in love with a Basque lady when he visited Curaçao. He married her and took her to sea, where she, sadly, was killed. He buried her in the cave mentioned above and visited her each year to leave some of his new treasure with her. When her coffin was found many years later, the island became known as Coffin Island.
The Beaches
The beaches on this island are idyllic. Pelican Beach has the designation of a Blue Flag Beach. These beaches have particularly high standards and are concerned about hygiene, conservation, and amenities. They are guaranteed to be administered in a way that is safe and environmentally conscious.
Some of the beaches located on the eastern side of the island are blocked off from the public when giant turtles are nesting. These beaches are not ideal to swim at for the most part because of the rough seas.
This island offers no fresh drinking water, so travelers are encouraged to bring their own water, food, and beach gear for their visit.
Our “Caja de Muerto” Tour
Our deluxe Coffin Island tour is provided in conjunction with the region’s top expert catamaran operator. Our adventure trip departs from the town of Salinas. It takes approximately 45 minutes in a speedboat catamaran to get to Pelicano Beach. Once onboard, you’ll be in the hands of experienced hosts who will offer complimentary snacks, beverages, and lunch.
Once on the island, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery, spend time at the beach, and/or go on a walking tour or hike. You are free to hike numerous trails and learn about the rocky terrain, the many cacti along the way, a few fun creatures, and the limestone rocks. You may also visit an old lighthouse from 1887, tour the legendary cave, and stop by the island’s tiny flora and fauna educational open-air museum. During your beach time, you may request access to use a kayak and/or a paddleboard.
Your unforgettable adventure includes roundtrip transportation by a Catamaran from Salinas to Pelicano Beach in Caja de Muertos and back, lunch, snacks, the use of a kayak and a paddleboard, and the necessary permits to enter the island. You must check-in at the marina in Salinas at 9:00 am as the speedboat catamaran departs at 9:30 am. Please contact us for more details or call at 1-888-366-6121 ext. 0.
Caja de Muertos Island is a very secluded natural treasure visited by few travelers and ready to amaze you.

Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!… or a bit of history.
In the Caribbean, about seven miles south of Puerto Rico, lies a tiny island called Caja de Muertos.
This is the same “Dead Men’s Chest” on which, according to legend, the famous pirate Edward Turch, better known as Blackbeard, landed his fifteen sailors for attempting to rebel, (among which, by the way, was someone named Billy Bons), leaving them only a bottle of rum to mock. There were no sources of fresh water on the island, and alcohol only increases thirst.
Exquisite punishment, right!
Legend has it that they all died trying to reach the other shore. But apparently not all, according to Jim Hawkins.
Stevenson derived his plot from Charles Kingsley’s “Christmas in the West Indies at Last” and never concealed it.
From there, he pulled out this “yo-ho-ho” (which means “one-two, they took it”, and not drunken pirate laughter at all) and added his few lines.
Young Alison then brought her back to normal at 1891 year old and she began to look the way we know her now. According to some reports, there were even seven verses.
And since that time, the version began to develop that this song was known among the pirates of the 18th century, which seems extremely strange, since Alison’s song was called “The Passion of Billy Bones”. Remember, on the arm of the old pirate Billy Bones, among many other tattoos, there was also “The Passion of Billy Bones”?
The real pirate with that name is unfortunately not known to historians.
And only then Bruns wrote this music and the song sounded in Pirates of the Caribbean …
And here is the Dead Man’s Chest itself or Caja de Muertos, Puerto Rico…
The lighthouse on the island
ho, and a bottle of rum.
Drink, the devil will manage the rest! Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum.
And the boatswain stabbed one with a knife, And the boatswain’s brain was knocked out with a hook,0003
And here they are, brave sailors, Lying around like sacks of rags
Or get drunk in a trashy tavern in the morning. Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum!
Crew list for fifteen names. Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum.
And everyone is cursed and branded. Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum.
The captain is slain with a cook’s ax, the cook is stabbed to death with his knife,
He has four holes in his chest, and the gray sky looks into their eyes,
And sprinkles with water – but neither sunset nor dawn will awaken those who were killed –
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen frozen bodies. Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum.
One defended himself, another did not have time. Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum.
But no one could escape death: One caught a bullet, the other a blade,
The tank and poop are splashed with scarlet blood, everyone is lying dead, damn it!
And although their eyes look to the sky, all their souls rush to hell.
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
There were fifteen of them, dashing guys. Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum.
And it seemed that there was no friendlier team. Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum.
And here it stands – a Spanish chest, in it there are seven hundred pieces of silver ingots, during his life he was well done!
Yo-ho-ho, and in a bottle of rum…”
Such is the story!
It will be necessary to turn to this island during our round-the-world trip, to check if everything is as the legend says?
