1. Take A Stroll Around Old San Juan

Old San Juan is one of Puerto Rico’s finest cultural attractions, and there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than by exploring the historic centre of this picturesque district on a walking tour. The vibe today is relaxed and laid back, but this old town has a history of turmoil, which has left its mark on the historic buildings and the ravaged fortress, Castillo San Felipe del Morro.

Visiting Old San Juan is one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico

You can hear stories of intrigue, smuggling and revolt as you explore this impressive castle by the sea – one of the most popular things to do in San Juan. It’s also an excellent place to sample some traditional Puerto Rican cuisine.

The sights, sounds and smells of Old San Juan are simply charming, making this a must on any Puerto Rico itinerary.

3. Go Scuba Diving in Paraguera

Paraguera is one of Puerto Rico’s hidden gems – a beautiful coastal town near one of the best coral reefs Puerto Rico has to offer. Get your Puerto Rico snorkelling fix at the Paraguera Wall. With colourful corals and incredible biodiversity, it’s one of the best places to observe marine life around the island.

Will you be adding Scuba diving to your Puerto Rico itinerary?

Paraguera is also one of only three places in Puerto Rico (along with Mosquito Bay and Luaguna Grande) where you can observe bioluminescent phytoplankton. These tiny microorganisms light up when disturbed, creating incredible visual displays in the water after dark.

If you’re lucky, you might see bioluminescence during your trip to Puerto Rico

Seeing the glowing waters of the bioluminescent bay at night is simply unforgettable and easily one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico.

4. Visit El Yunque National Forest

The only tropical rainforest within the US National Forest Service, El Yunque is one of Puerto Rico’s most popular attractions. This enchanting forest covers 28,000 acres on the north eastern part of the island, and receives a whopping 120 inches of rain a year.

El Yunque National Forest is one of the most popular places to visit in Puerto Rico

The lush, green vegetation sustains a wonderful diversity of animals, insects, and birds, including the legendary coquí frog, an important symbol of Puerto Rican culture and identity.

After a few days on the beach, El Yunque is the perfect place to cool down, as it is dotted with natural pools where you can take a refreshing swim. To get the full experience, why not book onto an El Yunque Rainforest and Waterslide Tour? This tour is filled with unforgettable adventures in the wilderness which you’re guaranteed to want to add to your Puerto Rico itinerary.

6. Hang Out On The Beach

Puerto Rico is known for its beautiful coastline. It’s home to miles of pristine white sand beaches where you can easily spend a day (or a week!) paddling in the warm turquoise waters and topping up your tan.

If you’re looking for the best beaches for paddling and snorkelling, head to Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo. With dreamy palm trees, golden sand, and a lovely sheltered bay where you can swim in peace, it’s a great option for a beach day in Puerto Rico. Cabo Rojo is another popular option, especially for snorkelling.

Cabo Rojo is an amazing place to add to your Puerto Rico itinerary

Perhaps the best beach in Puerto Rico is trickier to reach! It’s located on the outlying island of Culebra, nestled in a sheltered bay with shallow water and jaw dropping scenery. It’s definitely off the beaten path, but if you go, it’s likely to be the highlight of your Puerto Rico itinerary!

You have to go snorkelling if you visit Culebra on your holiday in Puerto Rico

7. Visit the Camuy Cave Park

One of Puerto Rico’s most popular attractions is the Camuy River Cave Park – an extensive cave network stretching for 286 acres underground. Shaped millions of years ago by the relentless course of the River Camuy, this impressive subterranean system is decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, occasionally opening up into vast caverns and sinkholes.

Camuy River Cave Park is one of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders

Step away from the lush green forests above ground and descend into a completely different world, where you’ll encounter strange wildlife and beautiful rock formations. This fabulous site should definitely be on your Puerto Rico itinerary.

8. Get Your Thrills On A Jet Ski or ATV Tour

Life in Puerto Rico is pretty relaxed and easy going, but if you’re looking for some thrills during your stay, you’ll get them on one of these brilliant tours. Finding the pace of life too slow? Hop on board an All Terrain Vehicle and enjoy a few carefree hours zipping around the fabulous Puerto Rican landscape on this popular ATV tour!

Alternatively, head out to the northern coast and tour the coastline all the way through the San Jose Lagoon to the beach of Isla Verde. I’d recommend taking a look at this awesome jet ski tour – definitely one of the most fun things to do in Puerto Rico if you’re looking for a little adventure!

Who would love to hop on a jetski in Puerto Rico?

Finally, if you’re still looking for that adrenaline high, head to the Toro Verde Adventure Park, where you can enjoy an epic 2. 5km zip-line known as ‘the monster’. Wow, that sounds like fun!

9. Visit Cueva del Indio

Although Puerto Rico’s architecture is dominated by its Spanish colonial history, the island has a much longer cultural legacy. The Cueva del Indio is an ancient cave that contains a large number of petroglyphs made by the indigenous inhabitations of the island, prior to the period of Spanish colonisation.

Cueva del Indio is an incredible place to see during your trip to Puerto Rico

Combine this fascinating spot with a trip to the ‘Taino Stonehenge’, an impressive stone circle covered in even more petroglyphs, which functions as a sacred ceremonial site for the indigenous Taino people. Nestled within the heart of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is a totally stunning island. With an iconic coastline, centuries of history and a heap of waterfalls – you’ll be spoilt for choice with all the epic and best things to do in Puerto Rico.

Now, if you’re anything like us, you’ll want to explore as much of the island as you can. This sometimes leads to us getting pretty stressed when trying to cram it all in – which, we quickly realised isn’t fun for anyone. You end up leaving being so exhausted as you’ve tried to cram in too much.

So, to help you along your way, I’ve popped a few firm favourites that you really shouldn’t miss in Puerto Rico. It’s a stunning island.

Take a look, below, at the best things to do in Puerto Rico. Have the best trip!

1.) Explore San Juan

Exploring San Juan is easily one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico once you arrive on the island. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that you can’t miss it!

After spending some time at the Museum of Art, touring Casa Bacardi (with a tipple of rum in hand) and exploring the vibrant area of La Placita (with all the live bands, bars and foodie spots) be sure to explore the historical spots in San Juan.

This means that you should pop over to Old San Juan, too.

Old San Juan is Puerto Rico’s oldest settlement and is listed on America’s National Register of Historic Places where you can easily spend half a day wandering around.

Yes, there’s an easy trolley bus around the museum, but it’s even more fascinating just to lose yourself in its historic streets on foot; well, as long as it’s not in the glaring heat of midday.

Also, be sure to visit the San Juan National Historic Site, too.

Located in Old San Juan, this National Park Service-protected site houses a number of spots such as; the forts of San Felipe del Morro (El Morro), San Cristóbal and San Juan de la Cruz. Gorgeous!

After all that exploring, head over to Verde Mesa for the yummiest of dinners -their seared tuna is so good.

Finally, finish off your night on the rooftops at AC Rooftop Bar and Eter Rooftop Lounge in Condado.

Both have some epic cocktails.

2.) See El Rio Camuy Caves

Around an hour’s drive from San Juan is the world’s third-largest underground cave system. It’s totally awesome (in the literal sense of the world).

Now, you probably won’t have time to view the full 10-miles of caverns or every one of the 220 caves, but a guided tour is a must and well worth a good gander around. Plus, you’ll be able to try your hand at zip-lining, going for a dip and river-jumping.

It’s so much fun.

3.) Explore El Yunque National Rainforest

Perched on the east coast of Puerto Rico, you’ll find one of the natural wonders of the island, just a 45-minute drive from the centre of San Juan.

Through beautiful scenery of El Yunque National Rainforest, you can take a trail from the Visitor Centre down to the waterfalls. Honestly, the Rio Espiritu Santo Waterfall or Juan Diego Falls are both stunning.

Yes, the roads can be a little on the rough side when travelling here but it’s totally worth the trip.

Alternatively, follow the Mount Britton Trail or explore Torre Britton if you fancy giving your legs a rest.

4.) Unwind on Culebra Island

As far as beaches go, visiting Flamenco Beach is one of its most loved and easily one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico if you love a bit of sun, sea and sand!

With its sands stretching for a mile and a half around the edge of the island of Culebra (only around 20 minutes off the coast of Puerto Rico), this beach feels both remote but also lots of services; meaning you’re never too far from snacks or bathroom breaks. Both essential at the beach!

To get here, it’s easiest to hop on a chartered boat tour or head over to Ceiba Ferry Terminal to grab a boat to Culebra itself.

Plus, the island is home to the ruins of Faro Isla de Culebritas, a lighthouse which operated from 1886 to 1975, and is now on the US National Register of Historic Places which can be seen.

Before leaving the island, stop off at Zaco’s Tacos that serves up some of Culebra’s best seafood tacos. Trust me on this.

5.) Trek Cueva Clara

Perched in the northwest of the island, exploring Cueva Clara is one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico if you want to explore the island’s natural history.

With guided tours available, you’ll get to explore inside the cavern, see the views across the island and explore the beautiful part of Puerto Rico.

Tours take place on the hour, so arrive well before your booking (30-minutes is best).

6.) Stroll through Vega Alta

Nestled, just west of San Juan, Vega Alta is a region that’s easy to visit, especially for Cerro Gordo National Park which hugs the shoreline.

For an easy to access beach, head over to Balneario Cerro Gordo and Cerro Gordo Beach West which is totally easy to visit for a long afternoon. Plus, nearby Playa Tocones is great if you fancy testing your skills at surfing!

Alternatively, for a busier beach (with lots of little foodie spots etc), head over to Playa Puerto Nuevo which is great for families, too.

7.) Visit Ponce

Situated on the south of Puerto Rico, Ponce is one of the large cities on the island that’s well worth a little visit whilst on the south coast.

Once here, be sure to explore Cruceta del Vigía (The Watchman Cross) with its 10-storey high viewing platform with views across the Caribbean Sea.

Oh, and stop off at Castillo Serrallés Museum which showcases the history of Puerto Rico and its sugar plantations and rum. Plus, stop by the Museum of Art to explore the Carribeans largest art museums which is great if you fancy seeing some of Puerto Rico’s works of art.

For some of the best ice cream, head over to King’s Cream. Their treats are all homemade and totally delicious.

8.) Stroll by Los Morrillos Lighthouse

Perched at the very tip of South-West Puerto Rico, Los Morrillos Lighthouse is totally easy to visit and well worth a gander. It’s a stunning place to wander for a stroll across the coast.

It’s a totally easy hike and doesn’t take much effort at all – totally great for a relaxing afternoon. Plus, it has a gorgeous beach for an afternoon dip at Playuela, Cabo Rojo, too.

9.) Explore Chorro de Doña Juana (waterfall)

Right in the heart of the island, visiting Chorro de Doña Juana is easily one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico if you fancy escaping the city for a few hours to explore more inland spots.

Again, the roads here can be a little winding and quite narrow at times, so pay attention., That being said, if you’re used to European roads you won’t have much trouble at all.

Easy to stop and just off the road itself. This is a spot everyone can enjoy.

10.) visit Isla de Mona (Mona Island)

Halfway between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, Isla de Mona is a 22 square mile uninhabited ecological reserve that’s for the adventurers amongst us. It’s not the kind of spot you visit for a quick day trip and is certainly a spot for that’s not for everyone. It requires weeks of planning.

Though, if you’re well prepared and up for a long adventure, you’ll easily find Mona Island as one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico. Yes, you will need to extensively plan, especially for harsh environments which can be very dangerous.

Oh, and just be aware, there is a limited number of permits for visitors each day and you will need to organise transportation to visit.

To add a twist of history and culture to your exploration of this beautiful island, go on a search for the carvings left in some of the many caves by the Taíno Indians.

If you’re something of a survivalist, want a huge adventure and willing to go without hotels, potable water and cell service, this might be the kind of trip for you? If not, stay well clear!

11.) See the watefall at Gozalandia

Around a 100-minute drive from San Juan, Gozalandia Waterfall is easy to visit whilst pairing up other northeastern gems to see on the island.

You might need to pay a small-ish charge to park up (around $10) but it’s well worth it for the trails and waterfalls.

It’s easily one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico whilst exploring the islands in more rural areas. Just be sure to tread carefully in wetter conditions – this area gets super slippy.

Bright Caribbean sun, medieval antiquity, warm wind mixed with salty spray and humming through the rocky cliffs, and the home of Pina Colada – all this is the delightful island of Puerto Rico, where you can make all your dreams of an amazing vacation come true.

If you are already tired of lying passively on the beach and swimming in the azure sea, we suggest you go on a tour to the most interesting places of the island.

27 waterfalls

All active and inquisitive people are offered an exciting excursion to the natural water park, where such a skill as swimming will come in handy. The attraction has three levels of difficulty, and is available for adults and children from eight years old. During the extreme walk, you will have to slide down a waterfall, jump into a cold mountain lagoon, pass through narrow gorges and climb winding paths to the tops of hills.

Brugal Distillery

Rum connoisseurs should definitely visit the distillery where the famous Dominican rum is produced. One of the oldest enterprises will allow everyone to get acquainted with the history of the plant, talk about the production of rum, and also offer to try some varieties of the “pirate” drink.

Isabel de Torres Park

Choose a romantic getaway in the Dominican Republic for two and go to a picturesque place – Isabel de Torres National Park. It was here that the famous film “Jurassic Park” was filmed, and a three-meter fern grows here. You can see all the beauty of the park on the funicular, but if you want to wander through the thick wilds that will take you to the era of dinosaurs, then take a walking tour.

Sosua

The small seaside town is always lively and crowded. Numerous bars and discos contribute to a fun pastime, easy dating and detachment from the real world. Those wishing to relax are actively offered an excursion to crocodiles, diving, jeep safari, snorkeling and deep sea fishing.

El Dudu cave

El Dudu karst cave is a favorite place for divers who dive into natural lakes with pleasure, emerging in the most unexpected places. At the bottom of the lakes are fallen trees that do not rot due to the high limestone content. In 2011, freedivers from Russia swam the longest cave (110) meters without equipment. To make this type of leisure more safe, there are spare air cylinders at the bottom of lakes and caves. The pictures that open before the eyes of diving enthusiasts are simply beyond description – you need to see it with your own eyes.
