Finding the Fountain of Youth

Do you dream of finding the Fountain of Youth? I think I have found it in Coamo, Puerto Rico!

Have you ever wanted to visit the Fountain of Youth?

Tales of a natural spring that restores youth and revitalizes anyone who touches the water sounds too good to be true. Legend has it that many explorers have gone searching for these magic waters, and I think I have found the Fountain of Youth in Puerto Rico!

Location

Located near the center of the island, deep in the mountains, are the natural hot springs of Coamo. Centered between Ponce and Caguas, these thermal baths are worth the drive.

  • Coamo Hot Spring Pools
  • Aguas Termales de Coamo
  • Coamo Thermal Springs
  • Banos de Coamo
  • Coamo Natural Thermal Pools
  • Piscinas Aquas Termales de Coamo
  • Coamo Thermal Baths

Known by many names, these hot springs are located between Ponce and Caguas in the south central town of Coamo. The healing properties are widely praised among the locals and visitors alike.

Facilities

The hot springs facilities are open seven days a week, 6 AM to 9 PM. There is a small entrance fee of $3.35 per adult (non-resident) for the clean, well maintained facilities including full size changing rooms.

Once inside, the area is a large tranquil garden with plenty of seating and areas to lounge. There is a small snack bar and gift shop with a beautiful mountain view.

Thermal Pools

The pools are fed from the natural thermal waters from a spring upstream. Locals say the pools were built downstream for the optimal natural temperature for the best healing properties.

The pools reported to be around 43 degrees Celsius, 109 F. There is a slight mineral smell to the water. The pools are continuously refilled from the springs to maintain the warm temperature, so the water never gets “stale”.

Starting with the larger Not-as-Hot thermal pool to acclimate to the heat of the water

Start with a cleansing shower and the step into the larger pool to acclimate to the temperature before stepping into the smaller, hotter pool.

The Hot Pool at Coamo Thermal Springs

There are lounge chairs around the pools and more tables & chairs for seating upstairs. You only need to bring a swimsuit and towel, everything else is provided!

It is recommended to limit pool time to 20 minutes or less, then hydrate and cool off before another soak session. The abundant seating is convenient for multiple sessions and it is easy to spend a couple hours soaking (off and on) in the pools.

Coamo Hot Springs Smaller, Hotter Pool

Saturdays and afternoons (Noon to 3PM) tend to be the busiest times. Most visitors spend at least an hour at the pools.

Are the thermal pools really the fountain of youth? I plan to go many more times and test the waters of this theory for myself.

Living water Kosino, excursions in Transcarpathia

Kosino – thermal springs, culinary festival in Kosino

In the village of Kosino or Koson (Hung. Mezokaszony) of the Beregovsky district in Transcarpathia, geysers with hot mineral water annually attract thousands of tourists to improve not only the body but also the soul. They come to yellow-brown springs from all over Ukraine from the end of April to November – while the swimming season continues. It is not surprising, because the Transcarpathian hydrogen sulfide thermal water has amazing properties. It has long been considered living water, healing because of the rich content of mineral biologically active substances: iron, sodium, potassium, iodine, fluorine and others. This combination of compounds is found only in a few corners of the world: the Kuril Islands, New Zealand, Iceland and Beregovo.

What are thermae or thermal waters? This word comes from the Greek “heat”, “warmth”. Actually, only those that have a temperature of 37-42 ° C are considered thermal. If it is higher, these are already hyperthermal sources, and if the water temperature reaches only 20-37 ° C, they are called warm or subthermal.

How did the springs with thermal water come about? There is a legend that once the ancient Greek goddess Hercyna walked the ancient homeland of olives and sunny grapes. In the midst of the journey, she felt thirsty, but unfortunately there was no water nearby. It was unbearable. Then the beauty stamped her foot and freed the stream closed underground. So, according to legend, thermal springs arose.

In fact, groundwater receives heat from the rocks that surround it deep in the bowels of the earth, often making its way in the areas of volcanoes (in this case, the waters come to the surface in the form of geysers). With an increase in temperature, mineralization increases, the concentration of sodium, silicic acid, fluorine, sulfate ion, chlorine ion and other useful biologically active and mineral substances increases. Thus, temperature is one of the main factors affecting the balneological properties of waters.

There are 3 baths with thermal water in Transcarpathia. The largest one is near the village of Kosino, about 800 meters from it. There is a health-improving and recreational complex – the recreation area “Shoshto-Termal”. Prices 2022 in Kosino are acceptable. Here is the warmest and mildest climate in Transcarpathia, due to active underground processes: the movement of layers, the heating of underground rocks and the formation of hot geysers with water saturated with iron. Healing water rises from one of the three wells currently operating in this region, which is called 16 T. A powerful hot stream comes from the very heart of the earth, gradually cooling down along the way. The depth of the well is almost 1200 meters underground. Mineralized by 24% water during extraction exceeds the temperature of +55°C. When it drops to +41°C, it is served to the pools equipped with fountains, underwater massage and Jacuzzi.

All European standards apply in Soszto-Thermal: in the middle of a beautiful oak grove, enclosed by a fence, there are two swimming pools, on the side there are wooden buildings made in the Austro-Hungarian style with appropriate white plaster and carved brown wood (quite close proximity affected here with Hungary), cafe, restaurant. Nearby car parking.

In this extraordinary beauty, the soul is filled with calmness, and the body with health. Tranquility of an oak grove, mild climate and intoxicating Transcarpathian air

annually attracts thousands of people not only from all over Ukraine, but also from all over the world. This water treats the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and nervous systems, rheumatism, kidney and skin diseases, arthritis, sciatica and even obesity. It also strengthens the immune system very well.

But how did our ancestors guess about the healing properties of thermal waters? Even the ancient Romans arranged for themselves places for baths in thermal waters wherever their legions passed. On the site of the famous world resorts – Karlovy Vary, Vichy, Baden-Baden and others – archaeologists find the remains of Roman baths to this day. Soon, the doctors drew attention to the healing qualities of thermal waters and began to investigate the reason for their action. So, Savonarola (the grandfather of the Inquisition burned on fire) treated the sick with fresh, mineral baths and even warm milk baths. Donkey milk was especially popular. It was in it that the wife of Emperor Nero basked. But the unique composition of thermal waters was discovered much later.

Modern hydrotherapy originated in the West. Its founder is the Austrian peasant Vincent Priesnitz, who managed to heal his wounds with hot compresses. After a happy recovery, he became an active advocate of hydrotherapy and thermal waters.

In Russia, doctor Nikitin systematized material on the use of sea water and mud, fresh and mineral waters. Recommended time spent in the pool – 25 – 45 minutes three times a day. It is not worth increasing it, especially if the disease is at the stage of exacerbation.

In addition to treatment and admiring the beautiful nature, you can always find something to do in Kosino. A real culinary feast will be held at the Kosino Thermal Waters complex on Victory Day. On May 9 of this year, the first Transcarpathian “championship” for cooking bograch starts here – an ancient Pra-Hungarian dish that was so liked by the inhabitants of Transcarpathia that it is now considered traditional. The winners of the competitions are waiting for a generous reward – 25 thousand hryvnia. This is a great opportunity to get not only aesthetic pleasure, but also material satisfaction.
