It’s interesting how a country that is 100 miles by 35 miles can hold so many secrets of its natural wonders, waiting to be discovered at any time.

At least for me, this was the case of Cueva Ventana. I lived in Puerto Rico for 24 years and never heard of this cave, yet in the past few years many of my friends have been talking about it like the new “it” place to do “turismo interno”, or local tourism in Puerto Rico.

So, in my recent visit to Puerto Rico, I made sure I visited this cave that mysteriously popped out of nowhere. Besides, I love caves!

Cueva Ventana, which in English means Window Cave, got its name from its most particular feature; the “window” with the view at the end of the cave.

The cave is not that big or deep, and the physical demand to explore it is average (anyone fit enough to hike about 10 minutes and climb down some muddy, natural steps will be more than fine).

With flashlight in hand (very important to have flashlights as it is pitch black in there), my friends and I made our way inside the hole in the ground that marked the entrance of the cave and started exploring the cave on our own.

One of the cool things about Cueva Ventana is that (at least to this date) you can visit it on your own without the need for a guide or the need to pay a fee. You come in, you explore, and you enjoy on your own.

Once inside, there were a few interesting chambers, lots of stalactites and stalagmites, a few slightly tight spaces, and lots of bats! Yes, bats! In case you’re afraid of them.

After about 10 minutes of slow walking in the darkness, I caught a glimpse of a ray of light coming out from a tight passage made out of rock formations. As I walked closer the light shone brighter and brighter. I could now see the opening in the end.

As I entered the last chamber, all I could notice was the huge contrast between light and darkness. It wasn’t until I got close to the opening that I could actually see the beauty of the landscape in front of me. There were the mountains, the river, the sky, and the farmlands… nature.

It was a cloudy day with scattered showers, so the ambiance at the edge of the cave changed as the clouds came and passed by. But, one of the most beautiful things I saw there was the rainbow formed after a strong shower.

The rainbow…Of course, I had to do a jumping picture.

After admiring and having fun at the edge of the cave (literally the edge as there’s a precipice beyond the opening) all my friends and I had to do was head back through the same way we came in.

How to get there:

Visiting Cueva Ventana is pretty easy. From San Juan, you just need to take the PR-22 road to Arecibo and take exit 75B. Drive for about 8 to 10 miles until you see a Texaco gas station to your left. Park on the Texaco, or next to it, where you’ll see a sign that says “Cueva Ventana”. Walk up the trail next to the sign for about 10 minutes until you reach the opening of the cave.

The climate of the first three continents studied is warm and even hot, in some parts humid or dry. In general, across the continents, the climate is similar in basic parameters. The climate of South America is more diverse, since the mainland lies in a larger set of climatic zones than Australia and Africa. The most favorable for human life and economic activity are the subtropical and temperate climatic zones.

4. Which of the continents is the hottest; the driest; the wettest? Why? The hottest continent is Africa, as the highest air temperatures are observed here due to the spread of deserts and semi-deserts. The driest continent is Australia, since 2/3 of the continent is located in areas of insufficient moisture. The wettest continent is South America, as most of the continent receives a large amount of precipitation.

5. Which rivers of the southern continents can be compared by the similarity of the nature of the flow and regime; difference? Explain your answer.

According to the similarity of the nature of the flow and regime, it is necessary to compare rivers whose basins are located in the same climatic zones and flow in the same relief conditions (Amazon and Congo). By difference, one can compare rivers whose basins are located, firstly, in different climatic zones (the mode and type of river feeding will change), and secondly, in different relief conditions, since the mountainous nature of the flow will obviously be different from the flat one.

6. What natural areas occupy the largest area on the considered continents? What are the smaller ones? Why? What is the connection between climatic zones and climatic regions, on the one hand, and natural zones, on the other?

In Africa, the largest area on the mainland is occupied by savannas and deserts, in South America – by humid equatorial forests and savannas, in Australia – by deserts. This is due to the climate of the territories, namely the distribution of precipitation over the territory of the continents. Climatic zones and climatic regions determine the natural zone that is formed on the territory, as they determine the air temperature and the amount of precipitation in the territory.

7. How does the law of latitudinal zonality manifest itself in the distribution of natural zones on the continents? Why does the alternation of natural zones occur? Compare the savanna zone of the first three continents studied. What explains the similarities and differences?

The law of latitudinal zonality on the continents is manifested in the successive change of natural zones when moving from the equator to the poles. The alternation of natural zones occurs due to changes in air temperature and the conditions of humidification of the territories. The savannas of the three studied continents are similar in that they have seasonality characteristic of savannahs (dry and wet seasons of the year), the same climatic conditions and soils are formed, and the general nature of vegetation. The differences are due to the location of the natural zone on the continents, since, for example, in Africa, the law of latitudinal zonality is clearly expressed, and in Australia and South America it is slightly violated. In addition, the zones are different in terms of plant and animal species that define the zone; the savannas of each continent are characterized by their own endemic plant and animal species, the largest number of them in Australia.

The most populated continent is Africa.

9. What are the differences between the continents in the composition of the modern population. What is common in the history of the indigenous inhabitants of the continents? What are the differences? Prove that the population is located on the continents depending on the history of settlement and natural conditions.

In the composition of the modern population on the southern continents, the main difference between South America and Australia, on the one hand, and Africa, on the other hand, is manifested. The population of Africa is dominated by the indigenous population of the mainland, while the basis of the population of South America and Australia is currently made up of descendants of immigrants from Europe and Africa (South America) or Europe (Australia). The indigenous people of all the southern continents experienced the oppression of the colonialists, they were exterminated (Aborigines of Australia and Indians), turned into slaves (Africans) – this is a common feature for the indigenous peoples of the southern continents. The differences lie in the level of development of the civilizations of the indigenous peoples, for example, in South America, before the arrival of the colonizers, there were large states, in Africa there were underdeveloped states, and some of the peoples were at the primitive stage, as well as the natives of Australia.

The population is located on the continents depending on natural conditions, since more settlement is characteristic of territories with favorable climatic conditions, for example, in Australia it is the east and southeast coast, in South America it is the southeast and northwest parts. The distribution of population depending on history also works on the example of Australia (colonization began from the southeast and east coasts, where the highest population density at a given time). For South America, this is manifested in the fact that on the east coast (from where the colonization of the mainland began) the population density is also high.

10. Based on the integrated map, identify the territories on the continents that are most developed by man. In what natural areas are they located? Why?

The most developed territories in Africa: the Mediterranean coast, the coast of West Africa, the southeast of the mainland, the hinterland of South and East Africa. The most developed territories in South America: the east and west coasts of the mainland. The most developed territories of Australia: the southeast and east coast. All territories are mainly located in the natural zones of savannahs, steppes and hard-leaved evergreen forests and shrubs, since these territories are most favorable for human habitation and agriculture.

11. What types of economic activity are developed on the studied continents?

Agriculture and mining, manufacturing industries (textile, food, engineering) are developed on the studied continents.

12. What natural phenomena have catastrophic consequences for economic activity and life of the population? Which of them do not depend on a person, and which occur under the influence of economic activity?

Hazardous geological phenomena (earthquakes and volcanic eruptions), dangerous atmospheric phenomena (droughts, heavy rains, hurricanes) have catastrophic consequences for economic activity and life of the population. All of them are independent of human activity. The catastrophic consequences for economic activity caused by the human factor include desertification and land degradation, which can occur due to unsustainable agriculture and deforestation.

13. On which of the continents is nature most changed by man? Why?

The nature of Africa has been most changed by man, as the boundaries and areas of natural zones have changed dramatically due to the consequences of human activity on the mainland. Huge areas of equatorial forests were reduced, desertification developed in the savannahs, and many species of animals were exterminated.

14. Name and show on the map the largest cities of the southern continents.

Major African cities: Algiers, Cairo, Abidjan, Lagos, Ibadan, Kinshasa, Khartoum, Johannesburg, Cape Town.

Major Australian cities: Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane.

Large cities of South America: Bogota, Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte.

15. Name the monuments of natural and cultural heritage located on the southern continents.

Natural Heritage Sites of Africa: Tessilin Ajer, Solonga National Park, Lake Turkana Parks, Victoria Falls, Ngorongoro Territory.
