PRDayTrips Travel Planning Guide

Hi. We’re Ray & Gwenn, and we’re the people behind PuertoRicoDayTrips.com.

We moved from New Jersey to Puerto Rico in September 2003 to escape the cold New Jersey winters. We purchased our current property in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico in August 2005, and spent a year renovating the house.

During our construction, we reconfigured the east wing of the house to create our Vacation Rental — Coqui’s Hideaway Rainforest Villa at the edge of El Yunque National Forest. We started welcoming guests to Coqui’s Hideaway in November 2006.

What makes this site different

In 2007, we saw the need for accurate, non-biased information for visitors to Puerto Rico. That was our reason for starting PuertoDayTrips.com. We wanted to provide a resource that visitors could use to read about the kinds of things there are to do in Puerto Rico.

One thing that is really important to us (and we believe to our readers as well) is that we have personally done 99% of the things we write about on this site. Unlike other travel sites, we don’t just regurgitate stuff we’ve read in travel magazines or elsewhere on the internet.

We walk through the streets of Old San Juan. We slug through waterfalls in the rain forest. We go on tours/excursions and attend shows so that we can share our experiences and others can decide if they’re worth your time and money. We eat at the restaurants we list on our site. We go to public restrooms so we can tell you if they’re clean or not.

Most of the time it’s a lot of fun. Sometimes … not so much. But we do it!

The rest of our family

We have 4 dogs and 2 cats that are all adopted strays.

All of our dogs were “street dogs”, or “satos”, that we rescued here in Puerto Rico.

One of them followed us home on a walk one day. The second one had been dumped with her puppies in a cardboard box on our street (we found homes for the puppies and kept the mother dog). The third one had been living on the street below us for a couple weeks. And the fourth was supposed to be a foster for us (along with her puppies) from the Humane Society … again we kept the mama dog and the Humane Society found homes for the puppies.

Our cats are also adopted strays. One came from Save A Gato in Old San Juan. The other was dumped with her kittens at our vet’s office.

We had visited Puerto Rico prior to living here, so we have experienced the island from a “tourist” perspective. We hope that our experiences might give you ideas for things to see and places to visit during your time in Puerto Rico. That’s what this site is all about.

Departing from Puerto Rico Day Trips from San Juan/Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico may be small in size, but every corner of this island has a different vibe. Great beach views abound along its coasts, but unexpected, glistening vistas, the ones that make you instinctively reach for the camera, are as typical here as the sand and waves. The best way to meet those seemingly happy moments? The trip, of course.

The roads of Puerto Rico serve as the stage and the performers are rolling hills dotted with small country houses, wild horses roaming freely through the forests, fishing villages with tiny bars by the water are charming sights that travelers discover when they dare to venture outside cities and the center of the island. Starting in San Juan, these day trips are less than two hours from the city and reveal the raw beauty and cultural goodness of Puerto Rico.

Luquillo – for stunning views of the coast and local delicacies

Located on the east side of the island, Luquillo is only an hour away from the capital and travel is pleasant and easy; just take PR-66 towards Rio Grande and then take PR-3 south. Luquillo will materialize soon, luring you towards the shore with its blue-green waters and the lines of the tallest palm trees around. Head to Balneario La Monserrate, also known as Luquillo Beach, if you want tranquil scenery, soft sand, and easy access. Drive a little further and stop at La Parede Beach for a more rugged coastline, a favorite among surfers who come here to catch the decidedly rough waves. After a day at the beach, just follow the locals who inevitably gravitate towards the Luquillo stalls to find delicious food and cold beer. These beach stalls offer a variety of fried foods such as alcapurrias , bacalaitos and piononos , but other stuffed dishes like fried pork with rice and beans are also easy to find.

Culebra and Vieques – for a beach escape

Simply put, Culebra and Vieques is a piece of paradise, home to ivory sands lapped by calm blue oceans and thin dirt roads flowing through dense tropical forests. Getting there can be as easy as hopping on a plane in San Juan and flying in thirty minutes, or you can turn it into a road trip by going to Fajardo and then traveling like locals through an hour and a half panoramic view. Ferry trip. If you choose the latter option, just be sure to get to the terminal early to pick up your tickets – if you’re traveling on a weekday or slow weekend, shoot to arrive half an hour early, but if you’re going out during high season or summer weekends, be prepared to arrive at the queue at least an hour early. Either way of arrival will soon have you swooning over bright white sands like Culebra’s Flamenco Beach or Navio in Vieques. But this relaxed, friendly local attitude will make the biggest impression on your trip – life on these hospitable islands is definitely sunnier, saltier and easier.

Fajardo – for tropical tunes and areps

Fajardo is not just a place to take a ferry to pristine Vieques and Culebra – this fishing town is also a great place for a tropical getaway. Just an hour from San Juan, Fajardo offers the immaculate sand of Seven Seas Beach, a nature reserve known as Cabezas de San Juan, and some of the best Arepas Rellenas (white corn pocket bread) on the island. Head to the village of Las Croabas where you can sample local food, drinks and music by the sea. If you’re feeling active, rent a kayak or kayak from Seven Seas and explore the peaceful coastline, or stroll along Playa Escondida, a stunning hidden beach overlooking Luquillo. Fajardo is also home to El Conquistador Resort, arguably the largest and most famous resort on the island, and the pristine islands of Hicacos and Palomino, only accessible by boat..

Guavate in Cayey – for glorified cuisine and rural roads

Cayey is known as the home of the highly publicized roast pig, a local delicacy. It’s not a dish you get at any restaurant on the island, however, and many locals make it a must to drive to Guavata to eat their way down the piglet route. Officially known as La Ruta del Lechón, this hilly country road (officially Carretera 184) in the Central Mountains has been made even more attractive by celebrity chefs Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern who frequent it. Along the track, culinary enthusiasts will find many different lechoneras (restaurants) such as El Nuevo Rancho, El Mojito and Los Pinos. The famous roast pork is usually served with rice, pigeon peas and a savory slice of cuerito (pork skin) on the side.

Salinas and Ponce – for southern charm and a dose of local culture Rico, crossing ridge after ridge, and the road itself is elevated enough that you can see the ocean over the mountain peaks. Salinas and Ponce are about thirty minutes apart and less than an hour and a half from San Juan.

First stop will be Salinas, famous for its highway food stalls on Highway 1 and oceanfront fish restaurants on the Camino de Playa (or PR-701). Another popular stop is Aguirre, a picturesque 19th-century sugar mill village now partly in ruins. It is home to turn-of-the-century cottages, the oldest golf course on the island, and a nature reserve. 0054

Old City: During the tour you will get acquainted with San Juan, founded by the Spanish colonizers in 1521. It is not only the oldest city in the US founded by Europeans, but also almost the oldest European city in Latin America. Unlike neighboring islands, old San Juan has been perfectly preserved in its original form, thanks to the efforts of local cultural figures who have achieved a ban on new buildings and the fact that any restoration work, even in private mansions, must be coordinated with the Institute of Culture. You will have a unique opportunity to feel the charm of the old world in the Spanish colony of the past centuries and see magnificent examples of colonial architecture. Among the historical attractions are the fortress of San Felipe del Morro (Fort San Felipe del Morro), the fortress of San Cristobal (Fort San Cristobal), the Catholic Cathedral of La Catedral (La Catedral de San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico), where the first Governor is buried Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce De Leon, and La Fortaleza, the oldest active residence and government house in the New World, where the current governor works.

SAN JUAN OLD TOWN AND PUERTO RICO COFFEE

Tour of the Old City: culture and history, and tasting the most beloved local drink – coffee.

The rich cuisine of Puerto Rico is a bizarre mixture of culinary traditions of the Taino Indians, faraway Africa and Spanish heritage. Coffee on the island is famous for its excellent quality: local coffee plantations supplied coffee to the Vatican in the 18th century, and today it is a favorite folk drink with excellent taste, regardless of where it is served – in a tiny cafe in the back streets of the Old City or in a fashionable restaurant.

The rich cuisine of Puerto Rico is a bizarre mixture of culinary traditions of the Taino Indians, faraway Africa and Spanish heritage. Rich stews (asopao), ritually prepared (pasteles) and delicious (mofongo) – all these dishes will be remembered for a long time for their delicious, and for some reason homely, aroma.

SAN JUAN OLD TOWN AND RUM TASTING

Old City Tour: Culture and History of the City, National Cuisine and Rum Tasting

The tour consists of a 5-hour excursion (walking, car meets and escorts) with a Russian-speaking guide. The tour program includes a visit to the historical sights of Old San Juan and a visit to one of the ancient fortresses (El Morro fortress, tickets included), as well as a tasting of local rum. Other ordered dishes and drinks are paid extra. The driver meets guests at the hotel half an hour before the start of the tour, and the guide – in the Old City.

Welcome to the capital of rum, where 132 million liters of rum are produced annually, including the world’s most popular Bacardi rum. We invite guests to a local bohemian bar where the owner himself, a rum connoisseur, will lead a tasting of Puerto Rico’s most vibrant rums, including the recently released (legal) pigorro moonshine rum. During a bartender-led tasting, guests will learn how to prepare one of the classic rum cocktails. If there are children in the group, a non-alcoholic tasting option will be offered.

SAN JUAN OLD TOWN AND COCKFIGHT

Tour of the Old City: Puerto Rican culture, history and cockfight.

The tour consists of a 7-hour excursion (partly walking, partly driving, 6 hours excursion and one hour round trip) with an English-speaking guide. The tour program includes a visit to the historical sights of Old San Juan and a visit to one of the ancient fortresses (El Morro Fortress), as well as a visit to cockfights. The driver meets guests at the hotel half an hour before the start of the tour, and the guide – in the Old City.

The cockfighting club we are heading to is located in the city center and is equipped as a modern sports arena, but the world of cockfighting itself is a long tradition, the foundation of which was laid back in the 16th century. Puerto Rico is the only U.S. territory where the sport is legal, and there are several clubs in each of the island’s seventy-eight municipalities. There are more than 120 of them on the whole island. Bets on roosters range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars; it is difficult to describe the excitement of the crowd surrounding the arena, where handsome roosters fight to the last. Each battle lasts about 15 minutes and victory is determined by the rules that have been established for centuries. Cockfighting on the island is called the sport of gentlemen: both because it is played mainly by men, and because all bets are oral and are not recorded anywhere, and all calculations between players are based on parole. However, given the level of emotion surrounding this traditional sport, it’s hard to imagine a fool wanting to cheat in such an inappropriate place.

ATTENTION! The fight ends when the rooster has run away or is pecked by the opponent in a hook that lies and does not rise. Please discuss this point with clients – the sport is ancient and reflects the basic principle of the animal world, i.e. the strongest wins. However, the spectacle is less bloody than bullfighting or boxing. Birds cost several thousand dollars and have been playing for their owners for years.

EL YUNQUE AND BIO BAY

The tour includes a 10-hour trip, a private guide tour of the El Yunque rainforest and a night kayak excursion to a unique, unforgettable bioluminescent bay (kayak swim). The price includes transport, driver, English-speaking guide and tickets. Dinner is paid separately.

El Yunque Rainforest, shortlisted for the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is known for its waterfalls and intricate hiking trails. The forest of El Yunque rises to almost 1,050 meters above sea level and receives over 500 mm of precipitation per year. You will be able to see the richness of the flora and fauna of the rainforest and admire the extraordinary plants and animals. You will see in its original form all the diversity of the tropical flora of the Caribbean: thousand-year-old trees, exotic plants with inflorescences of all colors of the rainbow, tropical flowers and spreading lianas.

The rich flora and fauna of El Yunque includes the rarest Puerto Rican green parrot, unique dwarf orchids and many varieties of ferns. More than 400 species of tropical trees grow here, including tabonuco palms, ausubo trees and over 50 species of orchids. Hundreds of small waterfalls fall within the park. Closer to the tops of the mountains stretches a strip of rain forests, also known as “dwarf forest”, where trees, pressed to the ground by strong winds, rarely grow more than 6 meters. Throughout the forest, there are many hiking trails with a total length of more than 40 km.

The Puerto Rican frogs known as “coca” living here are a symbol of the island due to their melodic arias, although their presence can only be felt by sound and few tourists are lucky enough to see them – the largest “coca” is no more than 5 centimeters in length. Be sure to ask your guide to teach you how to recognize this tiny tropical frog’s song.

Bioluminescent bay kayaking is an unforgettable sight that can only be seen in 5 lagoons in the world, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them. Such an extraordinary natural phenomenon is found in the east of Puerto Rico, in the town of Las Croabas. The lagoon, surrounded by mangroves, is home to a special kind of zooplankton that glows when in contact with moving objects. As if by the will of an unknown wizard, your hand, lowered into the water, is outlined by silvery lights. On a moonless night, when the glow of plankton in the water is especially bright, you can see the outlines of fish swimming under you. The trip does not require special sportswear and is accompanied by specially trained guides in accordance with all water safety rules. The hosts will teach guests the basics of kayaking and help beginners along the way (the swim to the bay takes about 25-30 minutes one way).

RIO CAMUI CAVES OR ARECIBO OBSERVATORY

Rio Camuy Caves tour or visit to the Aresi Astronomical Observatory Camuy or to the astronomical observatory in Arecibo. The tour ends with lunch at a local restaurant with a detailed explanation of local culinary traditions. The price includes transport, a driver and an English-speaking guide (lunch of your choice is paid separately).

The Río Camuy National Park is famous for its fantastic limestone formations and many caves, making it one of the best places in the world for caving. More than 200 caves have been discovered in this region, some of which have a colossal interior volume. On the walls of one of the caves, 42 petroglyphs of the Taino Indians, the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean, were found, destroyed by the Spanish conquerors. These caves formed in the bed of the Camuy River (Rio Camuy) over a million years ago, and are one of the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere. The impressive cave complex is equipped for a safe visit. Visitors will be led through the 50-meter Cueva Clara Cave, adorned with crystalline stalactites and stalagmites. Also, visitors can admire the Rio Camuy underground river, which flows along the bottom of the cave and is one of the largest underground rivers in the world.

The Arecibo Astronomical Observatory is a grandiose construction of mankind. The observatory has both the largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the world and the most powerful radar. A lot of modern achievements and research in the field of astronomy were made in this observatory. Several Hollywood films, including the James Bond series Goldeneye, have used the radio telescope bowl as a film set. Currently, the Arecibo Observatory is a US historical monument.

EL YUNQUE AND THE GARDEN OF TROPICAL FLOWERS

El Yunque Rainforest Tour and Heliconium Private Tropical Garden

The tour includes an 8-hour trip with a Russian-speaking guide, including a visit to the El Yunque rainforest, a visit to a private helicon tropical garden, and, if desired, in the remaining time – shopping in the center of shops from the manufacturer. Garden of Tropical Flowers: A visit to the heliconium garden, created by a Hungarian gardener over many years of painstaking work on his own estate, spread out in the middle of a tropical forest, is remembered for a lifetime. Includes an introduction to the typical fruits, vegetables and root crops on which the local cuisine is based.

El Yunque Rainforest, shortlisted for the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is known for its waterfalls and intricate hiking trails. The El Yunque Forest rises to almost 3,500 feet above sea level and receives over 500 mm of rain per year. You will be able to see the richness of the flora and fauna of the rainforest and admire the extraordinary plants and animals. You will see in its original form all the diversity of the tropical flora of the Caribbean: thousand-year-old trees, exotic plants with inflorescences of all colors of the rainbow, tropical flowers and spreading lianas.
