What You Need To Know About The Island Of Culebra And Cars

Taking your car to the Island of Culebra

Unfortunately, taking your car to the island of Culebra is as difficult as can be. We highly recommend that you choose to leave your car on the main island of Puerto Rico, rather than take it to Culebra. You can, technically, take your car to Culebra via a cargo ferry. However, this is not at all guaranteed. The cargo ferries that sail to Culebra are not at all intended to accommodate tourists.

You can get on the cargo ferry most times but realize that you could get a ticket and then get bumped off the transit due to a more important item (such as construction equipment) getting shipped. It is also advisable to book your trip and shipment as soon as you know you will be taking the ferry because it fills up quite quickly.

It is actually quite affordable to transport your car on the cargo ferry. On average, it will only cost you about thirty bucks as long as you are not transporting a large truck which will cost a bit more.

The worst part about the cargo ferry in Puerto Rico is that if it is deemed full enough, it will leave before the set departure time, and not just a few minutes either. The cargo ferry could leave hours before the set departure time. So, if you plan on taking your car to Culebra, get to the dock super early.
 

Alternative options

You do have a couple of other options in terms of getting around in Culebra. There are car rentals available on the island. It will cost you about $75 per day. You also have the option of getting a taxi. Taxis on Culebra are mostly independently run. During the day, you can find them driving around. At night, there are fewer of them on the roads. The best idea is to get some business cards from taxis during the day. This way you can call them whenever you need to get around.

However, in Culebra, you will likely be close enough to the beach in order to walk there. You will likely also be close enough to town and all the restaurants. You will just need to walk a mile or two.
 

Advice for visiting Culebra

Culebra really is a wonderful place to visit. However, before you visit, read the following tips:

• Bring beach supplies – The main attraction of Culebra is the beaches. So, you will need towels, sun tan lotion, bottled water etc. These are in fairly short and expensive supply on Culebra. So, be sure that you bring these things along with you.
• Be aware of where you book your stay – Some spots are better than others. When you book your hotel, make sure that you are close to the area that you plan on spending the most time in. As we mentioned earlier, taxis can be in short supply at night, so, you might need to walk unless you choose to rent a car.
• Plan ahead for the ferries – The ferries in Puerto Rico are not known for sticking to their schedules. So, get you tickets as far in advanced as possible. Then, on the day of your departure, make sure that you arrive early at the dock.
• Keep an eye on the weather – It is no secret that Culebra is a beach spot. So, make sure that you pay attention to the forecast when you visit. You won’t want to trek out to the beach if the forecast has nothing but rain in it.
• Take a taxi to and from the ferry – The wait to get in and out of the parking lot for the ferry can be excruciatingly long. So, take a taxi there or get dropped off somehow. If you are taking your car with you prepare for the long wait by arriving super early.

Conclusion

Visiting Culebra in Puerto Rico is a fantastic way to get away for a few days. However, getting there is more difficult than you might initially think. You should plan your trip on the ferry ahead of time regardless of whether or not you plan on taking your car with you because the ferry schedules can be pretty unreliable at times. Also, be sure that you bring whatever you think that you will need for the beach with you.

My car’s flat tire light was on, they told me it was just a sensor and not to worry about it. The car only had 17,000 miles on it but it was all beat up, scratched and dented and the molding was falling off the doors and trunk. On day 2 the battery died and I was stuck trying to find jumper cables for a few hours because the Avis help number was useless and the number for the local rental on the contract was never answered after about 200 tries. I was also given at least 2 other non working numbers and was on the phone with no resolution for hours that day because they could not get me in touch with the “right” people. I was unable to reach them and afraid to use the car so I did not use it for the rest of the week. Terrible car, terrible customer service.

We were offered a van instead of the small car we had reserved. It was a gas hog and difficult to manuver. Also, the vehicle had not been cleaned since the previous renter. At drop off, we discovered that the office was pretty much hidden, and is only open 4 hours a day (8am-12pm).

Our pickup was a disaster. We had a 1pm pickup and didn’t get our car until after 5. We checked in and were told they would call when the car is ready and someone would bring it around curbside. We waited 45 minutes and no call. We watched others check in and get their car before us. We asked the Avis representative and they said we had three in front of us. We waited 30 minutes and went back up. They said maybe another 20 minutes. We went back up after 30 minutes and she said to go talk to the manager at Budget next door. We were one of the last people in the airport waiting in our car. Finally they gave us keys and told us to walk up the hill and get our own car. We pulled all of our luggage up the hill and the stairs and got our car. Worst pickup experience I have ever had. Never again.

Staff was friendly enough but not helpful. When we arrived there were people waiting for vehicles. Some were waiting 1/2 an hour or so. The check-in process was slow. Once assigned a car, you walk a while, self document damage and go. Our vehicle was badly damaged on all four bumpers. As we would drive and hear things rattling, we were sure a bumper would fall off. It didn’t, but it wasn’t at all good. The return process is not clear. There’s no help. Limited signage. And this is a rental place inside the airport; typically a seamless process. The cost was a very poor value at about $150/ day for a Hyundai Elantra. Do not recommend.

Vehicle was damaged in multiple areas and took pictures of entire vehicle inside and outside due to threat by staff that if it was damaged or came with 1 mile less than a full tank of gas, I would be charged. I had bought the insurance at time of reservation and the insurance even said they might try to have me buy another insurance policy….which they pushed. So technically, I bought both the extra policy online and had my personal insurance policy which had rental car coverage but they wanted me to take another one out at the rental desk threatening me that if the vehicle was damaged in any way….my credit card would be charged the value of the vehicle. Between that and the gas statement…. .they make a hard push to tack on extras. I did get gas 2 miles away and they did a checkin quickly and no additional charges so far on credit card.

The staff were generally rude to customers as a whole.

We waited THREE hours in line to pick up our rental. Upon arrival at the desk, we were told that the rental was not in their system, that they were sold out, and that there was no car for us. We called the corporate line and were told that the rental was visible but the representative at the local St Thomas rental office declared that it had “not been ported over” to them and thus there was nothing they could do for us. We reserved the rental FIVE months in advance and were left stranded in an unknown place…with children. It wasn’t a great start to our much needed vacation.

When we picked up the car the attendant was very short with us and we could hardly follow what she was saying. This was the first time me and my new wife have ever rented a car and when she asked for us to pay we just used a debit card. We were than charged and extra 28 or so dollars a day because we didn’t use a credit card, which wasn’t mentioned until after she charged the card, and we weren’t fully aware of this beforehand. We than asked her if we could switch our payment method to a credit card, which we had with us, to avoid the extra fee. She quickly and rudely respond that she couldn’t do that for us since she already ran our card. Like I mentioned this was the first time we have ever rented a car and will likely be the last time we rent with Hertz unless we can somehow get this sorted out.
