COMIENZOS DEL SIGLO 16, los colonos en Puerto Rico sin importarle la tragedia demogrfica que otros causaron en Santo Domingo en desgracia de los indios, cometieron los mismos abusos y obtuvieron iguales trgicos resultados en la Isla. Nuestros indios tanos comenzaron a fallecer en nmero alarmante vctimas del maltrato en las minas y las enfermedades importadas de Europa, de las que carecan de resistencia inmunolgica. A falta de mano de obra, los colonos obtuvieron el visto bueno de los frailes jernimos y los dominicos para sustituir a los indgenas con esclavos africanos. Ms tarde, arrepentido de haber dado tambin el endoso, Fray Bartolom de Las Casas se lamentaba: no advirtiendo la injusticia con que los portugueses los toman y hacen esclavos; el cual, despus de que cay [en cuenta] en ello, no lo diera por cuanto haba en el mundo, porque siempre los tuvo por injusta y tirnicamente hechos esclavos porque la misma razn es dellos que de los indios. .. Estos documentos no expresan que todos fueron exterminados. De hecho, otros documentos eclesisticos indican de matrimonios de indias con espaoles. Es una realidad histrica que, contrario a otros europeos (ingleses, franceses, holandeses) los espaoles se entrelazaron racialmente con los “indios”. Los hijos de estos se consideran mestizos, no espaoles ni tanos o indios “puros”. Slo hay que ver las razas desde Mxico hacia Sur Amrica, donde en varias de ellas no slo prevalece, sino que predomina la raza indgena contrario a la experiencia de los indios con los ingleses y los norteamericanos en los Estados Unidos. En Puerto Rico, an contra la anuencia del gobierno, frecuentaba el intercambio racial. Por ejemplo, cuando Sabana Grande se separa de San Germn y es fundado, el ncleo blanco y econmicamente acomodado que compona el Cabildo vio con malos ojos el proceso tnico que se produca en gran escala en su regin, y hasta cuestion los derechos de aquellos ciudadanos espaoles por casarse con mujeres pardas. El 4 de noviembre de 1822, el alcalde don Francisco Antonio Nazario se quej al Gobernador de Puerto Rico: …se observa que tanto en las Juntas parroquiales como electorales se introducen personas que siendo por si blancos de calidad estn casados con mugeres notoriamente pardas, se declarase por el Supremo Govierno si estas tales personas que han desmerecido por su mal casamiento son propiamente ciudadanos en el Gose de sus derechos. .. * Citado en el libro Sabana Grande: Notas para su historia, de Luis R. Negrn Hernndez. El Gobernador no contest la carta del alcalde Nazario. Hay que sealar al respecto una confusin entre algunos boricuas nacidos en los Estados Unidos que adoptan el concepto racial y cultural norteamericano de “si tienes una gota de sangre india, eres indio”. A travs de los siglos, el pueblo puertorriqueo ha continuado marcadamente el intercambio entre parejas de diversas razas. No se ha de omitir que hasta inmigrantes de la raza china fueron admitidos en la Isla para trabajos de construccin de la carretera militar as como, no slo la presencia de inmigrantes de una larga lista de naciones y regiones del globo, sino el mestizaje que se dio con el criollo y la criolla. Unos tipos raciales son ms marcados que otros, segn la zona de la isla que visites. Dando charlas en barrios tierra adentro en pueblos del centro de la Isla, muy corrientemente encuentro estudiantes de pelo castao claro, y casi rubio (natural) y ojos azules o verdes. Recientemente me sorprend al conocer en un barrio de Barranquitas a una adolescente de tez, ojos y facciones similares a las nrdicas. En las costas y en las que fueron zonas azucareras abunda el tipo negro y mulato, mientras que en el Oeste no slo se ve el tipo de antepasado europeo sino sobresale el “pardo”, el de piel bronceada” y ojos oblicuos, achinados. Hemos encontrado documentos que hacen mencin de “indios” en libros parroquiales de la vasta regin de San Germn (que no solamente incluye el pueblo) a finales del siglo 18 y principios del 19. Estos, no obstante, no detallan si fueron los indgenas importados de Centroamrica para labores agrcolas, como sugieren algunos historiadores, o los que fueron introducidos de otras islas del Caribe durante la colonizacin. Luego de algunos aos, estos “indios” no vuelven a ser mencionados en los registros de San Germn, sin explicacin alguna. Tampoco sabemos qu factores llev al prroco, presbtero o funcionario a identificarlos como “indios” en su descripcin racial. Es tpico en el hablar puertorriqueo, describir a los de tez bronceada como “de color indio” o “trigueos”. Los espaoles en los siglos 17 al 19 usaban comnmente el trmino “pardo” (de piel obscura, intermedio entre blanco y negro). Una nueva aportacin al tema, son los estudios que conduce con los cromosomas “Y” el doctor en biologa Juan Martnez Cruzado, del recinto universitario de Mayagez. El especialista en gentica comenz a investigar, con una beca de $270 mil de la Fundacin Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos, la presencia gentica “indgena” en el puertorriqueo. El profesor Martnez ha estado examinando el cido desoxirribonucleico (ADN) de las mitocondrias (mtADN), que se heredan solamente por va materna. Sus ms recientes resultados, catalogados como “preliminares”, han revelado que el 62% de los puertorriqueos tiene herencia indgena por va materna, el 27% africana y el 11% caucsica (blanco). Estos hallazgos, an con un ejemplo pequeo de la poblacin, tendrn que ser comparados con los estudios de antroplogos, historiadores y otros especialistas en la rama, y podran conducir una posible revisin de nuestra historia. Dichos estudios confirmaran que los espaoles no exterminaron a los indgenas en la manera que se les criticaba y que el mestizaje entre iberos y nativos fue mayor del que se crea. Y de ellos, con la presencia africana, fue eventualmente surgiendo el puertorriqueo moderno. El estudio del profesor Martnez tendra que distinguir entre el “indgena” en general y el “tano” en particular que habitaba en Borinquen al tiempo de la colonizacin espaola en el siglo 16. No todos los indgenas del rea de las Antillas Mayores y Menores eran “tanos” o tenan una cultura, creencias e idioma uniforme, segn narran los documentos de la poca. “Aqu estamos mirando un solo lado de la historia y hay que mirar el cromosoma y que se hereda por el padre”, aclar tambin el bilogo. En febrero del 2007, el referido genetista especializado en evolucin molecular y el arquelogo y antroplogo Juan Jos Ortiz Aguil coincidieron -en expresiones dadas a la Prensa del pas- que los puertorriqueos no somos indios, no somos negros, ni somos blancos europeos. .. somos boricuas con una multiplicidad de caractersticas biolgicas. Se ha demostrado que el 60% tiene ascendencia indgena, pero tampoco quiere decir que es de origen tano exclusivamente. Ambos expresaron la necesidad que en los nuevos textos de historia y en las escuelas de Puerto Rico se incluyan o mencionen los nuevos descubrimientos. A noviembre del 2011, con una subvencin de la Fundacin Nacional de Ciencias, tanto Martnez y el Dr. Tars Oleksyk, continuaban estudiando la diversidad gentica de los puertorriqueos. Cuarentids estudiantes han estado visitando 78 municipios de la Isla recogiendo muestras de enjuague bucal para obtener ADN. El fin es generar mapas que describan la distribucin geogrfica de distintas variantes genticas de importancia. Los resultados cientficos obtenidos al presente pueden ser vistos en el portal https://genomes.uprm.edu. No me sorprendera que estudios similares del cido ribonucleico se realicen en Santo Domingo, y que stos arrojen revelen tambin la presencia de sangre indgena, aunque con una marcada presencia africana dada la invasin y presencia haitiana de Santo Domingo en el pasado. Otra nacin a estudiar sera la cubana. Recuerdo las fotos que me enseara el erudito misionero jesuita Antonio Santa Ana [que descanse en paz] que aparecen en su libro Misin Fronteriza. En la obra, se ilustran campesinos de tierra adentro de Santo Domingo (la Repblica Dominicana) de principios del siglo pasado, distinguindose los de tipo “espaol”, “negro” y un tercero muy similar a los indgenas de la regin descritos por los colonizadores del siglo 16. En dcadas recientes, visitando personalmente dicha “regin fronteriza” (en la frontera de Santo Domingo con Hait) encontr dichas distinciones fisiolgicas menos pronunciadas, resaltando ahora la del negro y el mulato, stos an viviendo en bohos y consumiendo casabe. Conversando aos atrs con el Dr. Ricardo Alegra, me indicaba cmo siempre le pareci significante el gran nmero de nombres tanos en pueblos y barrios de la Isla. Entre otros temas al respecto, hablamos sobre los dientes de pala pronunciados que se notan en algunos puertorriqueos y que son compatibles con los crneo-faciales indgenas, y los rasgos fsicos de muchos de los habitantes del rea de Sabana Grande y pueblos vecinos. [Ver detalle de los dientes de pala muy pronunciados, comunes en la zona montaosa suroeste de la Isla]. Las instituciones culturales de Puerto Rico, inclusive las del Gobierno del Estado Libre Asociado, nunca han desmentido la herencia de las tres razas blanca, negra e indgena que en una u otra forma han aportado a la cultura y fsico del puertorriqueo, como claramente lo ha ilustrado el sello del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquea (I.C.P.R.), que si mal no recuerdo dise el artista Lorenzo Homar, con quien tuve el gusto de trabajar un verano en el antiguo taller de Artes Plsticas que se encontraba en el edificio posterior del Archivo General de Puerto Rico. The Taíno are Indigenous Peoples of the Caribbean. At the time of European contact in the late fifteenth century, our ancestors lived across most of Kuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Borikén (Puerto Rico),  Bahamas, the northern Lesser Antilles, and the southern tip of Florida in what is known as the U. S. today.

Before the arrival of Europeans, art in Taíno culture represented various aspects of daily life including spiritual world-view. Taíno artists worked with clay, wood, stone, shell, cotton, gourds, palm, feathers, and even bone. Today, contemporary Taíno artists work hard to maintain many of these artistic traditions.
