Culebra island adventures: Culebra Island Adventures | Discover Puerto Rico

Culebra Island Adventures Culebra, Puerto Rico

We begin by snorkeling North on Tamarindo Beach while observing the gorgeous scenery of Culebra and Cay Luis Peña.  Our first snorkeling session into the refreshing coastal waters is to discover the wonders of the corals and colorful fish under the sea.  Make sure you hold your snorkel tightly because speechlessness followed by excitement is a known effect after discovering the hidden secrets this wild refuge and unspoiled reefs hold within…after seeing one of Culebra’s finest natural reserve’s marine flora and fauna, we head back to enjoy some cold beverages and snacks.  Wait … there is still more!  Grab your snorkeling gear (provided with tour) again because we are heading out to swim towards the sea grass beds where yet another secret awaits. Apart from the other exceptional marine life, chances are high to experience Culebra’s most unique treasure, observing the native Hawksbill and Green sea turtles and enjoy their majestic beauty!
Hope to see you…soon!

Great experience, would recommend

Yueyang_Y, Jan 2023

Great experience with Nani and Mateo. Tour worth paying for since it made our day hassle-free and we didn’t have to worry about activities, rentals, or transit. Due to weather, the kayaking was canceled. But we still got to swim over the coral reef and see fish, jellyfish, and turtles! My mom couldn’t swim and Mateo towed her along on a floatie so we were happy she got to enjoy it. They take care of you if you can’t swim. We spent some time at Flamenco beach before returning and it was absolutely beautiful.

Absolutely Awesome Experience!

Ruth_M, Nov 2022

I’ve always wanted to snorkel but have been scared. I decided to do this excursion with my family because of the Sea Turtles and it was amazing. I screamed most of the way, but I was the only one lol. It was such a beautiful experience. My children are 11 and 13 and absolutely loved it. My phone didn’t work underwater so getting an email with videos and pictures from our guide was awesome. Elliot and Jon were very knowledgeable and personable. Great personalities and do their best to accommodate you. I 100% recommend this company and our your guides!

Beware dye to the Ferry overbooking.

Lynn_F, Aug 2022

We never Kayaked nor snorkeled. The ferry took us to the island and we were informed the ferry oversold and the guides were not allowed on. Heard the ferry oversells a lot and noticed both ways tour groups load last. So we were left with no water or food from 11-4 as the kiosk in the tour language was closed. Some took taxis back to get lunch. The tour group did respond saying they would refund us, they did not know the kiosk was closed, after a couple hours sent water and pizza and changed to pick us up at 2:30. Very disappointed as having a short list to Puerto Rico, only 4 days, we had been looking forward to this tour the most. ..snorkeling with turtles and kayaking. I would be cautious about recommending this.

Response from Host,

Aug 2022

Hola Lynn,
We are very sorry the day did not go as planned. The situation with the ferry caught us by surprise and forced us to cancel and refund the tour. This experience was not anything we want for our guests and are very sorry it was disappointing. While we tried to attend the situation, we realized we need to build a plan if something like this were to happen again. Your feedback is important to help us improve communication and strategies for this tour. We truly hope you were able to enjoy the rest of your stay in Puerto Rico.
Kind regards, KPR Team

Swim with turtles!

Darren_P, Aug 2022

Ashley, Luis, and Luisa were all so great and helpful. Swimming with sea turtles, fish, coral, and squid was the highlight of our trip. The kayak was fun but quite a workout. Just enough time on Flamenco beach. Would recommend!

Thank you, Darren! We appreciate your kind review of our services and recommending the tour!

Joel_D, Aug 2022

Great experience. All on time and worth the money. Great tour guides, John, Edwin and Eric. Our kayaking experience was wonderful but cut short due to a small emergency with one of our fellow kayakers. The best portion of the day was the snorkeling with the turtles. Beautiful wonders of nature.

Don’t miss out Flamingo Beach Island tour

Monica_H, Jul 2022

Snorkeling and kayaking off a small private island where coral is grow for regeneration followed by beach afternoon at Flamingo Beach. Absolutely everything was fabulous and highly recommended. Our tour guides were Elliot, Luisa and John all of whom took care of us and our group extremely well. High energy and knowledgeable.

It is generally accepted that the prototype of Treasure Island from Stevenson’s novel is the island of Youth

?

Previous Entry | Next Entry

“The doctor carefully broke the seals and a map of some island fell on the table… He looked like a fat dragon rearing up.”

Map of Treasure Island from the novel

It is generally accepted that the prototype of Stevenson’s Treasure Island is the Island of Youth (Juventud) off the coast of Cuba. Dimensions, mountains, dense forests and a pirate past – everything is the same … Except for one thing: the island was inhabited all the time, and the story of Ben Gunn running wild could not have happened on it. nine0003

Youventud Island on its side (to make it look like)

The next candidate is Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands archipelago. The island is uninhabited, there are deep caves in the rocks (remember where Ben Gunn hid the treasures?), a rich treasure was indeed buried in the vicinity. But the island is small, it cannot boast of forests and hills. Other possible prototypes – the islands of St. John, Rum, Cocos and others – fall even less under the description.

Culebrita Island. See the inverted dragon? nine0002 But there is another island that could be used to create Treasure Island. This is Culebra Island in the Los Cayos archipelago east of Puerto Rico. More precisely, a couple of islands: Culebra and Culebrita.

Both islands were uninhabited at one time. Both were used by pirates who ambushed, repaired and filled the holds with “live canned food” – turtles. At one time there was a fort on the top of the hill. Then, already in the 19th century, a lighthouse was built there, but the palisade of old thick logs is still visible in some places. nine0003

There is a shallow lake with a swamp (there is probably a fever here too). Rocks with caves. Herds of wild goats roam (hello to Ben Gunn again). The most interesting thing is that the currents, reefs and dangers described by Stevenson almost exactly correspond to reality. So much so that you can be guided by a book when choosing a place for anchorage …

Let’s take a walk along Treasure Island – we will feel like Jim Hawkins. Let’s start with the landing…

This is the shore where the Silver Pirates landed. In the background is Cayo Botella, aka Skeleton Island:

View of the lighthouse (former fort) from the northern camp:

»:

Exit from a sheltered bay, natural channel between mangroves. View from Ben Gunn’s boat:

“Then I came to the edge of an open sandy plain, about a mile long, where there were sparse pines and some gnarled, crooked trees, like oaks, but with light leaves like willows. “: nine0014
