Most endeavors start off with a dream and most entrepreneurs dream BIG. In the case of Victor González, those dreams entail a $25 million complex which includes a rock climbing space, a recording studio, four bars, a mini-golf course and spaces in which to play every single sport your mind can imagine. However, every dream has to start off somewhere, and that’s where the almost 1.7 acre Eco’s Sports Park comes in.

With an initial investment of $3.5 million, González and his wife, Viviana Thon Olazagasti, embarked in the very colorful adventure that is Eco’s. Putting everything on the line, they opened the first sports park in Puerto Rico in what used to be a parking lot of the Luis Muñoz Marín Park in San Juan.

“I want my life’s work to be Eco’s. I am giving this my all. We do not receive any government incentives, every single cent I make goes back into the business,” said González.

With three soccer fields, two courts which convert from basketball to volleyball courts, three beach volleyball courts that easily convert to beach tennis courts, two paddle courts and two padbol courts which were recently converted into areas for boot camp training thanks to a partnership with boxer Juanma López Rivera, Eco’s is every sports enthusiast’s dream.

At present, Eco’s welcomes an average of 10,000 people a week, and that is without counting the people that go to their theme nights and activities. The sports park has 76 employees that González refers to as “family members” because, at the end of the day, Eco’s is a family enterprise. His mother-in-law, Marimer Olazagasti, industrial psychologist by trade, is the park’s Director of Human Resources; his brother, Juan José González helped finance the repairs needed after Hurricane Maria’s wrath; his sister-in-law, interior designer Janelle Thon was in charge of the décor; and the solar panels which inspired the park’s name and generates 95 percent of the electricity that Eco’s uses were purchased from his father’s company, Windmar Group.

Windmar also happens to be the sponsor of several of Eco’s sports leagues. The park has more than eight sports teams in which an average of 450 people play. From beach volleyball to soccer, from basketball to paddleball, Eco’s has a team for you to join. The teams play weekly games and have a tournament at the end of every semester. The cost to join varies, but, at the higher end, is the fee for a semester of being part of one of the soccer teams, which costs $140 and includes your uniform, tickets to events held at Eco’s, a guarantee of playing 14 games and free alcoholic beverages after the semester’s final game.

As an added bonus, every Monday to Thursday, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Eco’s offers massage services courtesy of Cedano’s Relax Zone.

“We are here to help athletes after their games. We offer massages, we have compression socks and kinesio taping, among other services,” said Jose Cedano, licensed massage therapist and owner of Cedano’s Relax Zone.

More Than Just Sports

González’s vision extends far beyond sports and into the food, beverage and entertainment industries. Aside from sport facilities, Eco’s houses two bars, one with a VIP section, four food establishments and a meeting space which houses video game consoles.

The perfect space at which to host a party, the meeting space lies in close proximity to the Granito Bar on the first floor and the four restaurants. Amongst these are Fahrenheit Pizza Express, Crush Juice Bar, Eco bites comfort kitchen and, the latest addition, Vegandillas, a 100 percent plant based enterprise which will offer vegan “empanadillas” or “vegan junk food”, as D. J. Funky Joe likes to call them.

Vegandillas, the brainchild of Jose Vallenilla, aka D.J. Funky Joe, chef Jose Bonilla from El Punto Vegano, and John Paul Vallenilla, is a spot that wants to challenge common perceptions of veganism.

“We fool carnivores!,” joked D.J. Funky Joe. “We want to improve the way that Puerto Ricans eat.”

For D. J. Funky Joe and his son, veganism is a lifestyle that has led to improved health and they wish to share their experience and their lifestyle with the world.

“We want people to try our food, just try it first, and then we will come at you with all the reasons why this is good for you,” stated the deejay.

“Through our projects, we are giving people options. We don’t want people to switch to veganism from one day to the next, we want people to try it. Say, one day a week, establish something like Meatless Saturdays!,” exclaimed excitedly John Paul.

For self-taught chef José Bonilla, Eco’s was the perfect place at which to establish this business and thankfully, the stars aligned and Vegandillas will open come December.

“Eco’s was the ideal place because it aligns with our eco-conscious concept. We want to bring attention to renewable energy and recycling…and with this being a sports park, it is conducive to a healthier lifestyle. We want to provide delicious and fun eats that don’t deviate from our traditional gastronomic tastes,” said Bonilla.

The Paradox: Family-Friendly Atmosphere and Exciting Nightlife

Aside from offering perfectly maintained sports facilities and food, Eco’s hosts an array of social activities. On Mondays, they host a karaoke night, and on Wednesdays they host a Ladies Night, which turns into a Boss Babe event meant to bring together women entrepreneurs on the last Wednesday of every month. Wednesdays and Thursdays there are also beer pong tournaments at which one lucky player wins $300.

González wants Eco’s to be about more than sports; he wants this to be a place where people connect. With that end in mind, Eco’s also host events like the Block Party, to be held on Nov. 27; the Mega Mix Party to be held on Nov. 29; and a Burger Fest to be held on Jan. 11.

“This is a place where you can meet up or reconnect with people you haven’t seen since high school; network…,” said González.

The hotel itself is not bad, but food is a separate issue. At the pier in the restaurant, very slow service, the menu is meager. There is no children’s menu. oysters are not indicated on the menu. everyone is called a different price per piece. There are no dishes on the menu. We ordered a barbecue and waited for it for about an hour and they brought us not fried, but warmed up. I think for such a price it is not appropriate! There are few fruits. I would like to see seafood on the buffet for such money. I think for 1800 per person and canteen food is too much. According to the hotel: there are no umbrellas on the beach and it is not convenient with children. The hotel area is beautiful, but there is a children’s trampoline, and then it’s all undermined and there is no ladder to it, so that small children can enter it themselves. On the beach, they could make a children’s area under the shades so that the children would not be bored. On the beach, except for the swing under the scorching sun is nothing. You can’t find free sun loungers at all. As in Turkey, you have to run in the morning and take your seats. The linen in the room is not changed every day. Cleaning is 3+. The windows on the balcony are not wiped at all, the floor on the balcony is not washed at all. Refrigerators in the rooms do not cool at all and they are so small that apart from a couple of bottles of water you can’t put anything in there

We celebrated the fifth anniversary of the company in the hotel. Everyone is happy! They organized a worthy celebration for us. They organized paintball competitions, quad bike races, and there were many more corporate-themed competitions. In the evening we took a steam bath, and on the second day we went sailing on yachts, whoever wanted to. Very rich and interesting, I recommend!

We decided to celebrate a children’s birthday here. Didn’t regret it! The hotel has a kids club where you can also lay tables. After the gatherings, we went to see the animals at the zoo, traveled to the children’s island, our kids are simply delighted! I did not want to leave, so the family stayed on the second day, rented a room. Rooms are good, service too. We’ll come again!
