サーバーエンジニアとは、ネットワークに接続されたサーバーの設計、運用・保守といったハードウェア部分だけでなく、サーバーサイドのソフトウェア設定、運用・保守、さらにはセキュリティ対策なども行うサーバーのスペシャリストを指します。

今回は、サーバーエンジニアの仕事の具体的な内容と、必要とされるスキルや資格などを詳しく紹介していきます。

サーバーエンジニアの仕事内容とは？

サーバーエンジニアの仕事は大きく分けて3つあります。

サーバー構成の設計

新規プロジェクトの際に使用するサーバー構成の設計を行います。予想されるトラフィック量やデータ量からサーバー全体の構成とスペックを見積もり、効率良い運用を視野にいれながら設計をしていきます。

サーバーの構築

OSやアプリケーションのインストールと初期設定などを行い、サーバーを使用できるように整えていきます。サーバーはさまざまな種類があるため、利用するサーバーに合わせたアプリケーションを選択し、設計どおりに構築していきます。

担当する案件がオンプレミス（自社運用サーバー）で運用しているサーバーの場合は、顧客先に出向してサーバーの導入を行い、サーバー使用者（多くは企業）が管理する設備内に設置します。

サーバーの運用・保守

サーバーを利用し始めると、さまざまな作業やトラブルなどが発生します。サーバーの運用・保守では、インストール済みのソフトウェアに修正を加える、新しいソフトウェアをインストールするなど、円滑にサーバーを利用できるように維持、管理していくことが求められます。ハードウェアの面でも、追加のサーバーの設定やメモリの増設など柔軟に対応していくことになります。

また、障害を未然に防ぎ、安定した長期運用を行うために、サーバーの定期的な監視は欠かせませんが、この監視も運用・保守のチームで担当することが多い業務です。

設計や構築とくらべて、業務が長期にわたって続く運用・保守は、サーバーエンジニアにとって重要な業務の一つです。

サーバーエンジニアに必要な知識とスキル

ここからは、サーバーエンジニアにとって必要な知識やスキルについてご紹介してきます。

各種OSの知識

Centos（セントオーエス）、Ubuntu（ウブンツ）、Amazon（アマゾン）、 Linux（リナックス）、CoreOS（コアオーエス）など、サーバーに使用されるOSは複数あり、幅広いOSに関する知識が必要です。

また、各OSの設定だけでなく、ネットワークに対する知識やサーバー用のアプリケーションの知識、セキュリティの知識についても要求されます。

オンプレミスの知識

従来型のサーバー環境構築は減少傾向にあるものの、今もなお需要があり、すでに設置されているオンプレミスのサーバーも数多くあることから、サーバーエンジニアには重要な知識であるといえるでしょう。

サーバーの設計と調達、構築、物理的な設置、運用のための管理・維持およびコストの計算など、サーバー運用に関する多岐にわたる技術とスキルが要求されます。

クラウドの知識

現在ではSaas（サースまたはサーズ）（Software as a Service）、IaaS（イアースまたはアイアース）（Infrastructure as a Service）、Paas（パースまたはパーズ）（Platform as a Service）などのクラウド環境が増えてきているため、クラウド環境のサーバーの知識も必要です。特に、活用するためには専門の知識が重要となるIaaSは、サーバーエンジニアにとって重要な知識になりつつあります。

コンテナや仮想化技術に対する知識

構成管理をAnsible（アンシブル）（構成管理ツール）などで直接管理するのではなく、Docker（ドッカー）（コンテナ仮想化ツール）、Kubernetes（クーバネティス）（コンテナ運用の自動化ツール）などを利用する場面も増えてきました。
そのため、従来の仮想化だけでなく、近年主流になりつつあるコンテナ型仮想化などの仮想化技術に対する最新の知識を身に着ける必要があります。

サーバーエンジニアに必要な資格

サーバーエンジニアを目指すにあたって取得しておくことが望ましい資格がいくつかあります。今回は、代表的なものをご紹介します。

OS系の資格

LPIC（エルピック）（Linux Professional Institute Certification）

LPI（Linux関連の技術力を中立な立場で認定する活動を行っている非営利団体）によって運営されている、Linux技術者の技術者認定資格です。運営がLPIであることから、ベンダーやメーカーに依存しない中立な資格であり、世界規模で実施される世界最大のLinux技術者認定資格でもあります。

サーバーエンジニアにとって有用なのは、Linuxの応用的なシステム管理やサーバー構築に必要な知識を有することを認定するLPIC-2以上です。なお、さらに踏み込んだ専門分野の知識を問うLPIC-3も存在します。

LinuC（リナック）

LinuCは、クラウド時代の即戦力エンジニアであることを証明する認定として、LPI-Japanが運営しています。「仮想化」や「クラウド」というキーワードが普通に出るような今の時代におけるサーバーの構築・運用・管理に必要なLinuxの知識や技術力を問うだけでなく、仮想化技術の概念からコンテナやDockerの管理・運用に必要なこと、オープンソースのリテラシー、アーキテクチャーについての基礎理解など、まさに今の即戦力サーバーエンジニアとして必要な知識と技術力を身につけていることの証明となる認定です。

MCP（エムシーピー）（Microsoft Certified Professional=マイクロソフト認定プロフェッショナル）

マイクロソフト社が認定するWindows系のOSの資格です。特にWindowsサーバー、データベースの管理など、Windowsサーバーに関する専門知識を有することを証明する資格です。マイクロソフト社の製品、テクノロジーおよびソリューションについて幅広く出題されます。

AWS認定ソリューションアーキテクト

AWSの運用に実務経験を持つエンジニアを対象とした、Amazon公式の認定資格です。AWSのコンピューティングやネットワーキング、管理サービスに対する実務経験、アプリケーションに関する技術的要件を特定、定義する能力などが問われます。

サーバーエンジニアであれば、2年以上の実務経験者を対象としたプロフェッショナル以上の資格があるとより良いでしょう。

Google Cloud Certified Professional

Googleクラウドの運用に実務経験のある人を対象にしたGoogle公式の認定資格です。GCP（ジーシーピー）（Google Cloud Platform）でのソリューションの設計、構築、管理、データ処理システムの設計や構築、セキュリティ知識などを問われます。

サーバーエンジニアであれば、まずは半年程度の経験者を対象にしたアソシエイト認定資格の取得を目標にし、最終的には3年以上の実務経験者を対象とするプロフェッショナル認定資格を目指しましょう。

ネットワーク系の資格

CCNA（シーシーエヌエー）（Cisco Certified Network Associate）、CCNP（シーシーエヌピー）（Cisco Certified Network Professional）

CCNAは、大手ネットワーク関連機器メーカーのシスコシステムズ社が実施しているネットワークエンジニアの技能を認定する試験です。

主にネットワークエンジニア向けの知識とスキルを問う資格ですが、物理的な構築を業務内容に含むサーバーエンジニアにとっても取得しておくと有用な資格です。

なお、CCNAの上位資格にCCNPがあり、こちらはより専門的な内容を問われる資格となっています。

サーバーエンジニアの将来性

オンプレミスのサーバーがまだまだ存在する現在では、サーバーエンジニアの需要は引き続き安定してあると考えられます。しかし、仕事に対する要求は急速に変化しており、クラウドの台頭によって、運用コストが大きいオンプレミスは減少していくことが予想されます。そのため、今まで通りのオンプレミス中心のスキルでは生き残るのが難しい時代になってきています。

サーバーエンジニアとして生き残っていくためには、クラウドに関する知識と技術を身につけ、オンプレミスとクラウド両方に能力を発揮できるようスキルアップしていく必要があります。

また、クラウド環境で並行して必要となるコンテナや仮想化の知識とスキルについても学んでいくと良いでしょう。クラウド環境化でコンテナを利用したサーバーの環境構築と運用管理の自動化といったスキルは今求められているスキルの一つです。

IaaSの時代もまだまだ必要とされるサーバーエンジニア

ますます加速するIaaSの時代のサーバーエンジニアは、単にサーバーの設定ができるというだけでは生き残れなくなってきています。しかし、クラウドであってもサーバーが存在する限り、サーバーエンジニアは設計、構築、運用・保守の場面で欠くことのできない存在であり、必要とされる職業です。

従来のオンプレミスに加えてクラウドの管理やコンテナの知識なども蓄え、新しい需要に応えていくことによって、クラウドサーバーを運用できるエンジニアとしてさらなるステップアップを目指しましょう。
