Fajardo Ferry Schedule To Culebra & Vieques – Puerto Rico Revealed

Traveling to the offshore islands of Culebra & Vieques definitely requires some pre-planning and knowing some information beforehand so you don’t get a surprise. You basically have limited options to get to the offshore islands of Puerto Rico. You can save time but spend money taking a private charter plane to the islands, or you can save money but spend time taking the ferry from Fajardo on the northeastern shore. If money is not an issue, we recommend flying to make your life easier. While the ferry is inexpensive ($2.50 per trip), there are many hassles to consider before opting for this route.

Fajardo Ferry Schedule Information: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The ferry that runs from Fajardo to the islands of Culebra and Vieques is run by the Puerto Rico government and is called the Integrated Transportation Authority of Puerto Rico. The ferry runs everyday including holidays 365 days a year and carries between 200-600 passengers per day. It is a very economical way to see Puerto Rico’s beautiful offshore islands, but as the saying goes you “pay for what you get.”

Many times the ferries are cancelled due to weather or maintenance issues and you can easily be left stranded in the town of Fajardo and not get to your desired destination. As we’ve mentioned many times in this book, you have to come into this with a heavy dose of patience and be travel flexible with your plans in case the very real possibility exists that you won’t get on that ferry to go to Culebra or Vieques. It’s happened to us more than once.

Logistics: Getting your Tickets + Dealing With The Long Lines

This is the ugly part of the process. While we do feel that the cost of the ferry is beyond reasonable at $2.50, the process of getting a ticket to and from the islands is a bit of a headache. We’ve been in long lines only to not get tickets because they “sold out” and we had to scramble to make new plans (Playa Escondida in Fajardo). The truth of the matter is that you simply have to get in line by 4:45AM at the latest for the 9:00AM departure.

The people who show up at 7:00AM are already looking at long lines and no guarantee. We found the sweet spot is between 4:30 AM- 5:00AM, and bring a book and comfortable chair because you will wait a long time. We wish there can be another way, but this pretty much ensures your best shot of catching the early ferry for a full day trip.

There are a limited amount of tickets to be sold and the 9:00 and 9:30 ferries always sell out.

What happens is that residents of Culebra and Vieques take priority over travelers, tourists, and even Puerto Ricans from the mainland. The huge lines are made worse by some locals standing in line to “buy tickets for others” and then re-sell them. Sometimes you’ll be in line for hours, then see a new group of people all of a sudden come and get serviced right away. These are the “locals”, and I can see why travelers and tourists would not like to see this at all. Still, we write this so that you can be aware and come in with the right frame of mind so as not to ruin your day. It makes sense to buy your round trip tickets when you have a chance, but even that sometimes you can’t do and have to do the line all over again on your way back!

In terms of the long lines, you are going to be under the hot sun at points of the wait so make sure you bring umbrellas for shade, a comfortable chair, and a cooler filled with snacks and drinks.

Online / Phone Booking

We recently came across some information that a company is now taking online booking at their website called Culebraferry.com. Use at your own risk since we haven’t yet and we really hope they do a good job trying to organize this process.

Sometimes though, you may be able to call ahead and “hold” your reservation with a credit card if you happen to be extremely lucky and get through on the phone. About 50 tickets are set aside for “future dates”, and you would pick up your tickets at the far right window when you get to the ticket booth. This is not a guarantee of your ticket, but does give you slightly better odds and you can get there later and not at the early hour of 3:45AM. The phone numbers to call and give it a shot are: 787-497-7740 or 787-494-0934 x 2729/2727/2736. Call Mondays-Friday from 7:00AM-3:00PM.  You can also try to write to the inbox at their facebook page (see Information to stay updated below) or email them at: reservaciones@atm. gobierno.pr.

Parking/Car Information

Car rental companies will not allow you to take your car to the offshore islands so you need to make arrangements for transportation once you’re in the island you chose. There are car rental companies available in both Culebra & Vieques, and we gotta say exploring these islands in a jeep is where the fun is at! You can also find local transportation like taxis at both the ports of Vieques and Culebra. See below for information where to rent your car.

In terms of parking, you should have no problem finding a safe parking company nearby the docks in Fajardo that will charge you $5.00 a day. It is a public facility and is open 24 hours a day. Make sure to bring your ticket with you as you’ll need it to pay on your way out.

What You Can Bring

As we mentioned, the ferry service allows you to bring your beach chairs, umbrellas, and coolers where you can store them inside the ferry. If you bring more than you can carry they will charge you more or simply won’t let you bring it. Make sure to bring your cooler filled with drinks, food, and anything else you will need.

Inside The Ferry / The Trip + Ferry Schedule

Once you get your ticket, there’s more waiting to be had as you are seated in an orderly fashion for a few hours before the ferry arrives. If you’re the type that gets sea-sick easily we strongly suggest you take medicine for that as the seas on this voyage are very choppy and the seas are rough. We’ve seen people throw up, which is not cool. But it happens so make sure you can handle being in the ferry for about the 1 hour you will be at sea. The seating inside the ferry is air condition and it does get kind of cold so bring a jacket.

Schedule + Prices (7 Days A Week + Holidays)

Fajardo —>Culebra: 9:00AM, 3:30PM, 7:00PM

Flying To Culebra or Vieques Directly

Flying to the offshore islands of Culebra and Vieques is the best bet for headache and a hassle free experience. It will cost you though. The costs for flights from San Juan run between $70-$115 per flight. The trip is about 30 minutes, and the views from the planes as you land are pretty epic in our opinion. There are two companies you can choose from to coordinate your trip:

Vieques Air Link – 787-722-3736

Air Flamenco – 787-724-6464

“What’s your story?” It’s a question we all get asked. I was born in Miami, FL to Cuban parents and raised American. Why write an interactive travel book about an island I’m not even from?

Ferry ticket mess

Jan 2015 • Family holidays

Very difficult to buy ferry tickets. Arriving on Friday 3 hours before departure, we saw a huge queue. All local residents after the opening of the ticket office take tickets without a queue. The box office does not sell return tickets for another day on weekends. Therefore, you also need to go for these tickets on the island on the day of departure. There were no more tickets 1 hour before departure. It is difficult to get tickets for the morning ferry to the islands and for the evening ferry from the islands. Many go to the islands “one day”. The ferry itself is quite comfortable. Tickets are very cheap ($2. 25 to Culebra and $2 to Vieques).

Ordinary ferry.

Jan. 2014 • With friends

The ferry is like a ferry – nothing special. I bought tickets, waited in the waiting room, sat down and drove off.
I used it when I sailed to Vieques and back. (There are also ferries to another island – Culebra.)
But there are two points – the first – the schedule – ferries do not run often – you need to look at the departure time and guess, despite the fact that a taxi from San Joun takes more than an hour here – it depends on traffic.
The second point – the sea can be restless. We had just that – small waves, rocked all the way and many people felt really bad – the queue for the toilet did not end.
The ferries themselves are different – in design, size and level of comfort. However, the swim is not long – somewhere around an hour. And Culebra too.

Terribly long trip.

Aug. 2017 • Family vacation

We took the ferry to get to Culebra for a tour we had booked, the line to get in was terrible, over an hour of waiting. The trip to Culebra was rough!! Everyone threw up, not an interesting journey, the trip back was a bit better. No menu for the trip, everyone agreed because they liked it and there were cockroaches everywhere.

Terrible!

July 2017 • Family vacation

Tried to get there twice during our week-long stay in advertising. First time leftbSan Juan A is 5am and arrived in Fajardo at 6am we were told we would have a 50/50 chance and after almost 3 hours of not moving in line they were busy. The second time we thought we would get there early to take the ferry 4 or 9morning. We arrived in line at 3am, still hundreds of people in line who had been there since midnight. We were told to wait for one hour, then sold out by 4am. The 9am ferry that will take 600 people was broken during the day and they were trying to fix it, we just decided to leave as we were told it might be after lunch they could leave if we ever got it fixed . Worst experience since the reviews we read and had to listen to. pretty much it ruined two of our holiday days waking up in the middle of the night to nothing. No one knows how many tickets are left, how many people can take, what is your real chance of getting on the ferry if you wait for several hours. We really felt like animals herding without direction! Oh, and the waiting area is in the middle of the road, surrounded by trash, stray dogs, excited/drunk locals picking cigarettes off the ground and talking to themselves, people trying to convince you to park on their “private” questionable parking lots and loud music coming from all places. Real place! If you don’t want a snorkel/scuba tour on Culebra – which we didn’t do due to open water and not from shore, the only way to access the island is on this ferry (which is meant for Culebra residents) or an expensive flight ( approximately $100/person). Good luck!!

Incredibly messy!

July 2017 • Family Vacation

I lived here in the 90s and it was never like this. Of all the places I have been on this planet, this has by far been the o e worst experience. It’s pure chaos without pointers. We arrived at 8 am for ferry 9morning in Culebra. It was so confusing and chaotic, we didn’t even get our tickets until 8:48. We then lined up under a hot tent with 6 small fans and at around 300 until almost 10am. Then they let the people who got in line go for the last time only on the ferry. The lady who took the tickets was rude and yelled at everyone. Need a newer optimized system. In addition, many people stood in line for the sun all the time, and didn’t even get on the ferry. Horrible.

MOOOO

July 2017 • Family vacation

What a nightmare. We arrived by ferry at 7.30am for a 9am trip to Culebra. We had already booked tickets so we could skip the big line that had already formed. The guard looked at the tickets and then at us. I use a walking stick and my 71 year old mom was with us. The guard handed us tickets and told us to go to a certain paddock to wait. My husband and son were sent to the main holding area. Worried about there would be stairs to navigate, my mom asked the security guard to let us stay together so that my husband could help me. The security guard refused. My mom listened with him, shows that I was blocked. He said, “terribly noisy. A stick means nothing.” My mom went to a different official who let my husband join us, but my son had to stay in a different area because he was “old enough” to wait alone. We definitely felt like grazing cattle left alone by my son was very uncomfortable for me. The ferry didn’t leave until 10:30, an hour and a half late. The trip was very rough and several people were obviously sick. Of course the ferry operators can’t control the roughness of the water, but the staff seemed so used to bad passengers that they didn’t offer to help with handing out hygiene packages. The islands of Culebra and Vieques are beautiful, but the ferry is an easy way to get to them. A better ferry with compassionate staff would appreciate.

AMAZING snorkeling tour!

May 2021 • For two

If you are unsure, hesitant, afraid, inexperienced – put it all aside and book your private tour with Laura! She was FANTASTIC from beginning to end! We received detailed directions on how to obtain our ferry tickets and get to Culebra, she maintained contact via text the day of our tour, and she picked us up right off the ferry. I was beyond nervous to swim in the ocean, I’d never been snorkeling and I’m not a strong swimmer. But Laura talked me through the entire process and she (literally) held my hand until I felt comfortable and ready to be on my own in the water. She allowed us to go at our own pace and made certain that we felt safe before we moved further into the water.

Laura was born and raised in PR, so she knew all of the sweet spots and exactly where to go to see the most sea life. We saw tons of turtles, the biggest sting ray I’ve ever seen, beautiful vibrant fish, coral reefs and even held a sea urchin! She shared little facts along the way about the different plants and animals we saw and she snapped so many pictures of us in and under the water. We were never rushed or hurried along and she asked throughout the entire tour if we were comfortable with continuing further. After the tour, Laura personally prepared sandwiches and snacks for us to have and talked with us as if we were friends of the family until we were ready to pack up.

She dropped us off at Flamenco beach for about 4 hours, and returned to pick us up in time to catch the ferry back to Cieba. After being so hesitant and afraid of going through with the tour, I couldn’t be happier that I did! Laura was absolutely amazing and I will 100% reach out to her again when we return to the island.

The most incredible experience!!! You must book with CIA!

March 2021

You must book with Laura and Damien, they are truly amazing from the beginning of booking to the departure.

I cannot say enough good things about our experience snorkeling with the sea turtles and exploring one of the world’s best beaches, Flamenco beach. Damien was so quick to respond to my booking questions and Laura, his amazing wife, was incredible during our snorkeling time in the water. We saw so many turtles, cool fish, an octopus, stingray and so much more. I even got to hold a sea urchin! They take photos during your entire snorkeling trip, so don’t even bother with our own camera you will want to enjoy the time in the water and not stress about getting your own photos.

After we were done snorkeling Laura packed us traditional Puerto Rican sandwiches, chips and drinks. She drove us to Flamenco and picked us up in time for our ferry. It was incredible. My Fiance and I felt like we stepped into a postcard and kept saying “Is this real life?”

I could make this review a lot longer, but I will try and make it short and sweet.

Book with CIA – It is way more intimate and you will get way better service than those other companies!!

Thank you both so much, we will never forget it and cannot wait to come back!!

Highlight of our Vacation!

Feb. 2021

Since my teenage daughter and I came to Culebra to relax for a few days, we were unsure about whether we wanted to spend any time doing tours… we are so glad that we chose to do so, and that we chose Culebra Island Adventures! While we were disappointed to hear that they weren’t offering kayak tours anymore, the Turtles & More tour did not disappoint! It was the perfect way to get acquainted with the island and its diverse array of sea life. We saw many turtles, manta rays, beautiful fish, sea urchins, lobsters, barracuda, and even an octopus. Our guide, Laura, spent time telling us about the history of the preserve and the animals that we were seeing. She also took the most amazing photos to document our adventure! I am so glad that we chose to do this tour – it was the highlight of our trip to Puerto Rico, and my daughter and I can look back at the photos and treasure the memories we made together. If you are planning a trip to Culebra, don’t miss the opportunity to kick off your trip with Culebra Island Adventures!

The best possible snorkeling tour EVER

Jan. 2021

We were traveling across Puerto Rico for two weeks and chose Culebra as our last 3-days stay before going back. A friend of hours recommended Lemuel to us, and we signed up his tour. Since we had more time, Lemuel suggested us to take a double tour: swimming with turtles, and coral reef snorkeling. We agreed since it was a private individual tour at the same price as a regular packed group tour (which I personally don’t like).

Lemuel showed a great attitude, passion and professionalism at the same time. I work in an entertainment industry myself and know how important is this to keep passion and share it with the clients. Lemuel is def a great person, great professional, and dedicated so his passion.

So, the tour was something I would never think about. We saw not just turtles, but manta rays, big and small fishes, sea stars, seashell crabs, jellyfish. The coral reef experience was something magical, I barely spoke as I was so deep (no pun intended, I was floating on the surface) in the process. Lemuel would show us around, explain how animals live and react, give us insights and attracted our attention to small thing we would never see on ourselves.

I recorded our adventures on a waterproof smartphone case at it looks great, much better than I expected (I’m a professional photographer myself).

My advice is not booking both sessions back to back and to have a small breakfast break in between to get some warmth and process what you just saw.

A perfect day – beyond our expectations

Jan. 2021

This was our favorite snorkeling trip! Laura and Damien were great communicators – easy to set up the tour and flexible with scheduling. We saw SO much underwater life and Laura took great pics of it all! Don’t miss this trip! It would be worth planning all other adventure scheduling around this availability. The time at Flamengo Beach was perfect. Absolutely beautiful beach. Bring beer as all places are closed around the beach. Laura’s lunch was yummy!! A perfect day!

Perfect Day!

March 2020 • With friends

Had a great day with Laura. She and Damian were a breeze to communicate with. They purchased ferry tickets for us which made catching the ferry easy. The ferries are nice, new and smooth. Laura picked us up from the station and drove us to Tamarindo beach. She guided us on a beautiful snorkel around the bay. She knew where all the best fish and animals were and pointed beautiful things we could easily have missed. She took amazing photos which she emailed to us. This was so nice and allowed us to just enjoy! Afterward she gave us sandwiches, drinks and fruit and then dropped us at Flamenco beach for 4 hours. It was as beautiful as promised and even though it was a busy beach you could easily spread out from other people and find a quiet spot. Then she picked us up and returned us to the ferry in time for the 5pm return ferry. It was nice to have just the two of us on the tour instead of going with dozens of others like many alternate tours. Would highly recommend!!

Great with kids

March 2020 • Family fun

My one daughter was very nervous about snorkeling and had a couple of major breakdowns while getting started and both damien and Laura were both so kind and never gave up on her and by the end she was diving down by the turtles and swimming faster than any of us. Thank you so much for your kindness and patience it gave our family an experience we will never forget. Also not sure if it was because it was sunday but only two food places open at flamenco beach so it took forever to get food so it was nice that we had brought some snacks.

MUST-DO!

March 2020 • For two

Laura and Damien made Michael & I’s experience is completely amazing! I would recommend a snorkeling adventure with them a million times! Our trip was so personable and I honestly felt like a friend of Laura’s half way through the day. The pictures she took for us were unbelievable and a treasure to keep forever! The lunch provided was more than I ever expected—I can’t say enough about the day! Highly highly recommended!

Amazing!

Feb. 2020 • Family vacation

Laura has thought of everything with this tour! She had the ferry tickets reserved for us which made getting on the ferry a breeze. The ride there was a little choppy though so be prepared for some nausea if you are there during the winter (the ride back was calm and easy).

She picked us up from the dock and drove us to Tamarindo beach where the snorkeling was amazing. We swam with sea turtles and sting rays and saw lobster, fish, and even an octopus! My whole family loved it. Laura is so knowledgeable and was great about taking pictures of us and everything we saw so there is no need to bring your own camera.

She then had sandwiches waiting for us dropped us off at Flamenco beach which is gorgeous!!!!! Definitely take Laura’s recommendation of eating at hut #6. The others weren’t as good.
