The Fort Alfonso XII or San Cristobal is a fort located on top of Mount San Cristobal (892.8 m above sea level), 4 km from Pamplona, Spain.

It was built after the Carlist War of 1872-1876 because the Carlists managed to reach Pamplona – under the control of the liberal government – with their artillery from this and other mountains surrounding Pamplona from the north. Advances in artillery during the late 19centuries forced the military authorities to build such fortifications in order to control the mountains and hills close to important cities. Another example is Fort San Marcos, near San Sebastian.

It was built from 1878 to 1919. The top of the mountain has been blown up and most of the construction is underground so it’s barely visible from the outside. Its three floors have an extension of 180,000 m². It is surrounded by a moat and the total extension of the facility is 615,000 m².

After the 1934 revolution, almost 750 revolutionary convicts were imprisoned there. Most of them were amnestied after the election victory on the left in February 1936 years old. During the civil war, the nationalist authorities imprisoned more than 2,000 war and political prisoners. On May 22, 1938, some prisoners organized a mass prison break. 792 prisoners escaped, but only three managed to get the French border; 585 were arrested, 211 died. Fourteen of those arrested who were considered leaders were sentenced to death. Most of the fugitives were intercepted in the following days. In 1988, a sculpture was erected in memory of the Republicans who died there. The fort stopped being a prison at 1945 year.

The Ministry of Defense still owns the facility although the last troops left it in 1991. Although there have been several projects to restore the fort and give it a new use and was declared “of good cultural interest” in 2001, it remains today derelict and ruinous.
