Riviera del Conero. Portonovo – Unarussainitalia

Riviera del Conero is a 21 km of luxurious beaches along the Adriatic coast in the central region of Italy – Marche.

The Riviera begins in the city of Ancona, the administrative and economic center of the region, and ends in the city of Numana.

Conero National Park (Il Parco del Conero) is also located here. This green oasis was born around the mountain of the same name in 1987 and represents 572 meters of dense forest protected by the state on the sea coast.

In this and subsequent articles I will tell you about the places and beaches that we visited during our three days in Marche. Of course, I didn’t see everything, so I invite you to share information about where you were in this area in the comments. It will be of interest to me, as well as to all readers who are in the process of developing an independent trip to Italy.

In this article we will consider only the city of Portonovo and the beaches located here. Subsequent articles will focus on Sirolo, Numana and Ancona.

Portonovo

Very often this part of the Riviera is called a “jewel” due to the incredible beauty of the beaches, the azure sea, historical buildings located here and gourmet restaurants.

Fortino Napoleonico

In the Gulf of Portonovo in 1810, the soldiers of Napoleon’s army built the military fort Fortino Napoleonico, which now houses the 4* hotel of the same name. Its main purpose was to protect the southern part of Ancona, as well as the ships that supplied drinking water during the hostilities between the French and the British.

Clementine Tower

Torre Clementina

A little further along the coast you can see the Clementine Tower (Torre Clementina). Built in 1716 by order of Pope Clement XI, it served to protect the coast from pirates. At the end of the 19th century, Adolfo de Bosis restored the tower, turning it into a summer residence. In various sources, it is also referred to as the Bossi Tower (La Torre de Bossi) or the Guard Tower (La Torre di Guardia).

Today there is a representative office of a cultural organization.

St. Mary’s Church

In the depths of the greenery is the Church of St. Mary

Here in Portonovo is the Church of St. Mary (La chiesa di Santa Maria di Portonovo), which is a valuable example of Romanesque architecture. Its construction dates back to 1034. In 1225, a monastery was added to it, which, unfortunately, has not survived to this day. In 1320, as a result of a landslide, which caused significant damage, the church was abandoned. And only in 1837 it was restored, and in 1934 is re-consecrated.

The Church of St. Mary is of particular importance for the Orthodox tourist , because it is here that the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God Andrei Rublev is located .

We can find an interesting story about this in the diaries of the famous Russian director Andrey Tarkovsky , who lived in Italy for a long time.

In 1980, together with his friend Tonino Guerra, he traveled around the Marche in search of locations for the film Nostalgia. Once in Portonovo in the Church of St. Mary, Andrei Tarkovsky quite unexpectedly noticed on the altar the image of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. He was told that once a Russian artist presented it and that it was possible that it was painted by him.

The church is not always open to visitors, so it is better to check the dates on the website or at the information centers of the Riviera del Conero.

I found the following information about opening hours in 2016:

June 14 – September 4: Tuesday to Friday from 17:30 to 20:00
August 15 – 10:30 – 12:30
from September 10 – 30: from Friday to Sunday from 17:00 to 19:30
October 2 – December 31: every Sunday and holidays from 10:30 to 12:30.
November 1, December 8, December 26 from 10:30 to 12:30

The beaches of Portonovo

The beaches of the Riviera del Conero are one of the main attractions of the Marche region. They are distinguished by crystal clear water with emerald hues, small white pebbles and lush greenery. All this together creates unforgettable landscapes, which I called heavenly.

Portonovo bay

La Baia di Portonovo

The main beaches of Portonovo are located in the northern and southern parts of the bay of the same name. Here you can find both organized beaches with sun loungers, umbrellas and bars, as well as wild ones, which can only be reached by sea or mountain paths. Therefore, if you plan to get acquainted with them, I advise you to bring a pair of tennis slippers to make it comfortable to go down.

Mezzavalle

Mezzavalle beach is located on the very edge of Portonovo bay. This is a wild beach, which can be reached either by sea or by two paths that start from the Conero track.

La Vela

The wild beach of La Vela is located in the south of the bay. Its name comes from the mountain located here in the form of a sailboat (La vela means “sailboat” in Italian). This is the perfect place for diving enthusiasts.

Il Trave

The wild sandy beach of Il Trave is located north of the Mezzavalle beach. He knows because of two things:

clay deposits located here, which bathers use as therapeutic mud;
is the place where the well-known in these places “mosholo” clam grows, which does not differ in appearance from mussels, but has a bright taste with subtle notes of algae and sea water.

To be precise, the territory of the mossoli extends from Pietralacroce to Sirolo, centered on Portonovo.

It is very common to see fishermen on the shore cleaning freshly caught mossols for an evening meal. They are usually cooked in a pan along with olive oil, garlic and parsley, or they are made into spaghetti.

You will definitely find this dish in local restaurants.

Where to eat in Portonovo

Il Laghetto Restaurant

I really enjoyed dinner at the Il Laghetto restaurant, which is located on the beach. Locals consider it one of the most delicious fish restaurants. The prices here are quite affordable: first courses from 11 euros, second courses from 14 euros.

If you are traveling by car there is a large free car park.

Clandestino Sushi Bar

Next to the Clementine Tower (Torre Clementina) is the Clandestino Sushi Bar. Here you will be offered gourmet dishes from Chef Moreno Cedroni, who is the owner of two Michelin stars.

We should also mention the design of this place. The gray-blue tones of the walls of the institution contrast very favorably with the seashore and the beach. We were here in the evening before sunset. Indescribable feelings. You can see for yourself by looking at the photos on the site.

Separately, it is worth noting the stunning sunsets in warm orange-red tones.
