About

Located at Arecibo, the Cueva del Indio is an area where the Taino Indians held tribal meetings and made numerous carvings in the walls of these natural limestone caves. To get to the impressive location there is a bit of a hike. Once you get through the trail, you will get to see multiple rock formations, in one of these formations lies the cave. To get to the cave there is a long wooden ladder at about 25 feet from the surface. Inside the cave you will be able to admire over 80 indigenous petroglyphs from our taino ancestors. these artifacts seem to date all the way back from 1200 to 1500 A.D. You will also be able to admire the beautiful ocean waves crashing on the rock formations. There is vast parking space and in the same location the attraction “Los siete arcos” is available.

You might want a guide for this one

We totally lucked out by arriving at Cueva del Indio just as tour guide Jose Falcon was finishing up one of his tours. When he saw us waiting to head through the small opening to get inside the cave, he peeled off from his group and took a few minutes to guide us through – even though we were just clueless tourists and not his customers! I can’t imagine we would have made it in without his help, and would definitely recommend his knowledgeable services if you are determined to get into the cave. Otherwise, you might just be relying on luck – we did not see any other group go into or out of the cave during our entire ~hour visit.
If you do visit by yourself: as other reviews have mentioned, parking near the beach and walking over to the cave (and not paying the misleading $10 parking/entrance fee) was very easy. Probably not a good tourist attraction if you are claustrophobic.

    Beautiful place without crowds!

One of our favorite activities in Puerto Rico! The price was $10 per person from the parking lot. The man there showed us pictures to give us an overview of what we could do. If you pay attention to that, you don’t need to hire a guide. The path is flat and sandy for a short while, then you come to the volcanic rock. You definitely want shoes on to walk on that. We went to Cuerva de Indio first, and one of us was brave enough to climb down near the opening. He didn’t climb up to the small opening because it didn’t feel safe enough to do so alone. But he could see into the larger opening of the cave and see some of the Taino petroglyphs, plus a great view of one of the arches. Next we explored the arches, and were glad we kept going, because it was such a neat area. It was a mix of walking over rock and on sandy beaches. The views were awesome, and it wasn’t crowded in the morning. Be sure to wear suntan lotion. If we had taken water along we might have stayed longer.

A must see

Jan 2023 • Family

Amazing views. It was apparently bought by a private owner and yes you do have to pay $10 to get in. The man was pretty spicy about the issue. The ocean was very angry when we went which created some awesome views. I would not recommend for younger kids as there are random holes that you could fall in. Be very careful and watch every step you take. The path to see the seven arches was hidden and we almost missed it. Worth the $ to see though.

Gorgeous sunny day with the swell making a show out of this already beautiful place.
Very picturesque plus the touch of history.
Totally worth 10$ and a short detour on your way from San Juan to the points in the west of the island. The drive up along the shore is also great with several nice beaches.

This park is free. Don’t park in the parking lot. Enter the real entrance per picture. So sad how people always out to make a buck. The caves are nice.

Breathtaking but don’t get ripped off

The place is great to explore and beautiful views. Don’t park in the big parking lot if you don’t have to. It’s private property and he charges $10 per person. We parked at Km 8.2 and walked in as it’s a public space and natural park.

Do Not Pay – Find Real entrance, see photo

Dec 2022 • Friends

Do not pay this person where this map leads you! This is a public park. Park your car on the side of the road and walk a little – you’ll walk anyway.

I left a photo showing the actual entrance for the public. Never pay!

Do Not Pay

Nov 2022 • Solo

This place was beautiful! It’s worth spending an hour or two. But BEWARE. The cave and the coast is entirely public property, belongs to all Puerto Ricans. But the land next to it (on one side) is private. It has a big sign advertising the cave, drawing people into their parking lot. People assume that that is the official entrance, and a crook sitting there collects $10 per person (including for 2 year olds), as “entrance fees,” for what is essentially parking fees. Please drive past the lot and park on the street and walk to the cave, it’s literally the same distance. I don’t know why the government doesn’t shut this crooks down. All the people I encountered at the cave assumed the administration over the cave charged $10 each person. NO!! The cave is free.

Not worth the price of admission!

Oct 2022 • Couples

The views were spectacular. However we did not make it to the top. It was extremely hot and the climb was extremely dangerous with no security measures in place. The rocks were sharp even with sneakers. Overpriced for sure! Just drive along the coastline your there anyways. We wondered who’s pocketing that $10 a person nonsense

Overrated, 10 dollars per person, nice view but I think is too much, also some got in without any payment just saying “we don’t have cash”,they will let you get in.

Cuba trip report, Havana, Trinidad, Cayo Santa Maria, Varadero from manager

Cuban beaches are some of the most beautiful in the Caribbean: endless and white sand, coral reefs, crystal clear and turquoise water. The Caribbean Sea is ideal not only for relaxation, sunbathing, but also for diving. Varadero is the most famous party destination in Cuba.

If you want to experience a mixture of antiquity and culture with a pleasant taste of cigars, rum and a touch of retro – then you are here! To Havana ! This is a Cuban city with a European kiss.
In Havana, you should definitely take excursions to the quarters of old and new Havana, where during the tour you can see: the Capitol and the National Theater, the El Morro fortress, take a walk along St. Be sure to go to the Square of Arms and the Cathedral Square. After having lunch in one of the restaurants in Havana, continue a sightseeing walk along the Amel Avenue or along the Revolution Square, from where a beautiful view of the José Marti Memorial opens. It will also be interesting for you to visit the museum of the HAVANA CLUB rum factory.

In the evening, tourists should visit the Cabaret show “TROPICANA”. The most spectacular and most visited place in Havana is the Tropicana cabaret, founded back in 1939 and is the only open-air cabaret in the Caribbean. You can watch shows in the style of the 50s. Listen to famous classical music and see incendiary dances with African rhythms. More than 150 dancers, singers and musicians participate in this musical performance. The show runs daily and prices start at 75 CUC, including a bottle of rum, cola and a snack.

And in order not to be tiring, you can always stay in one of the hotels near these attractions.

The hotel where I spent 3 nights: Inglaterra 4*
Located in the center of Havana, and it is very convenient, it is surrounded by historical monuments: the Capitol, the Grand Theater of Havana. The view from the rooms overlooks the Central Park and the Bolshoi Theatre. This 4-storey hotel building is equipped with 2 elevators. The hotel has a bar, a restaurant with live music, a cafe, a grill, and you can exchange currency at the reception. In front of the building there is parking for cars and there is also a taxi rank.

Hotel Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana 5*
Very nice hotel, also located in the center of Havana, despite the historical past of the building, the decoration of the hotel is made in a modern style. As soon as you cross the threshold of the hotel, you will feel chic. On the roof of the hotel there is an open-air swimming pool, as well as a SPA area with modern equipment, where guests can relax. Meals are not included in the price!

Hotel Plaza 4*
Very nice 4 star hotel, also historical, located in the old part of Havana. The Plaza Hotel was founded by Captain Walter Fletcher Smith and is built in a colonial style, like almost all buildings in Havana. Comfortable rooms, breakfast included in the price.

Hotel Sevilla 4*
Located in a grandiose old Moorish building on the famous Prado Street in the Old Havana area. The hotel has a spacious swimming pool, a stunning lobby and an open-air patio with live music every evening. The rooftop garden and terrace is another popular spot as it overlooks the Old Town. Famous gangsters Lucky Luciano and Al Capone were very fond of staying at the hotel, which attracts tourists to this hotel

Hotel Deauville 3*
The hotel is more modest than the previous hotels presented above.
Located on the famous Malecon promenade, which will be interesting to walk along in the evening, because local residents and guests of the capital spend their night exercise here. The windows offer panoramic views of the historic part of Havana and of course the ocean. Recommended for active tourists and young people. Breakfast for tourists is included in the price. On the roof of the hotel, there is a swimming pool and a bar.

Hotel Nacional De Cuba 5*
Outstanding and very stylish Hotel Nacional de Cuba. It is notable for its history and has an excellent location. The eight-storey Spanish-style hotel rises on a hilltop overlooking the Bay of Havana, offering panoramic views of the Old Town and the Vedado area. The hotel has a museum with photographs of all the famous guests who have stayed and lived there. That makes the hotel more unique.

From Havana, you must go on a tour at Viñales Valley , and for the whole day with lunch.
Unfortunately, our tourists rarely get out of the western region of Cuba, and this is in vain, but just 185 km from Havana is the Viñales Valley, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Believe me, there is something to see here – karst hills with branched caves and waterfalls, ancient and even modern rock paintings.
Everything in the valley is literally saturated with rich ethno-cultural heritage. Here you can visit the Cuban village, where traditional methods of tillage and tobacco production have been preserved, and the architecture of farms and villages has not changed. The valley is also famous for its cigar production. Cuban leaders have always preferred cigars from this area.

One of the biggest and most interesting attractions of this park is Indian Cave. “La Cueva del Indio” , a refuge for the ancient indigenous people of Taino with strangely shaped rocks and an underground river, and a waterfall inside a cave.

Trip to city of Trinidad
Trinidad, can be called a time machine. The colonial city is home to Cuba’s sugar production. The city-museum, which is protected by UNESCO.
Having visited this city, one gets the impression that this is a frozen past. Car traffic is banned in the city center – a truly revolutionary measure for Cuba.
Here you can see: the Main Square – Plaza Mayor, the Romantic Museum (Count Brunet’s House) and the Church of the Holy Trinity, which is considered one of the largest churches on the island of Liberty. The church houses a wooden statue of Jesus Christ from the 18th century. Estate of the planter Manac Isnaga

Well, in order to take a leisurely walk through the streets of Trinidad and understand the whole spirit of this city, you can stop for the night in one of the guest houses of the city. The price per night in one of the guest houses is approximately 30 CUC. Eating is also not problematic, there are a lot of restaurants and cafes.

After seeing the city of Trinidad, you can go on another excursion and take a trip to the Zapata peninsula, overlooking the Caribbean Sea south of the province of Matanzas. It is an ideal place for ecotourists and scuba divers. Sparsely populated and jealously protected by UNESCO. Much of the region lies within the Ciénaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve (also known as Natural Montemar Grand Parc), home to rare birds, crocodiles and diverse ecosystems. The main attractions of the biosphere are the Senaga de Zapata National Park and the Laguna de las Salinas, famous for its concentration of migratory birds. You can also make a stop at the interesting place Fiesta Campesina.

Take a fun boat trip along the lake through the mangrove forests, to the ancient Indian village of Aldea Taina, which has been recreated in our time. Here, during a visit to their hut, they will perform a ceremony of expelling evil spirits. Entrance to the national parks, except for the classic tourist points, is possible only with a conductor and a guide. After such an excursion, lunch and rest on the beach of Playa Larga (Caribbean Sea)

fish.

Our trip continued on on the island of Cayo Santa Maria .
Cayos are sandbanks (islands) in the Atlantic Ocean, which formed on top of a coral reef, and the island of Santa Maria until recently remained uninhabited due to the lack of fresh water.

You can get to it by driving along a special dam with a length of more than 40 kilometers, where in some places you can see pink flamingos.

Virgin white sand on the beach and turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation – here tourists will find themselves in paradise on earth.
This small island is highly valued for its coral reef. Impressive marine flora and fauna is available to tourists due to the shallow depth of the local waters.
Tourists are advised to take mosquito repellents with them.

Hotels in Cayo Santa Maria where tourists can have a good rest

Hotel Ocean Casa Del Mar 5 *
The hotel is part of the Spanish h20 chain. Located on the first coastline with access to a virgin beach. It has large modern rooms equipped with a coffee machine, iron, ironing board. Royalton Cayo Santa Maria 5*
This adults only hotel offers very beautiful suites ideal for couples and honeymooners.
Rooms with good repair, balcony or terrace. A very good, landscaped area is striking – all the bushes are neatly trimmed and well-groomed. It is calm and secluded here. The hotel has a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs as well as cigars and rum. The animation program is not as active as in the Grand Memories Santa Maria 5 * hotel.

Hotel Melia Buenavista 5*

Hotel Melia Las Dunas 5*
A very beautiful hotel, surrounded by greenery, all kinds of ponds, pavilions for privacy.
The hotel has a lot of animation for children and adults, both during the day and in the evening. Interesting shows with live music. There is a place for wedding celebrations.
Lots of restaurants and bars. If the choice of tourists falls on this hotel, they will fall into a tropical paradise!

There is a makeshift village called Pueblo La Estrella on the island. “Pueblo” means village, but in this case it’s more like a large shopping and entertainment center where tourists will find many other options than those offered in their hotel, and at a very reasonable price! It is also the ideal place to shop for famous Cuban cigars, rums and local handicrafts. There are several restaurants and bars, a disco, a bowling alley, a spa, a gym. Bicycle rental, bank, post office, conference room, children’s playground, and a central square with a large gazebo.

From the island of Cayo Santa Maria, I recommend going to Santa Clara .
Approximately 4 hours drive from Havana. Santa Clara has a special place in the revolutionary history of Cuba. This city is a mini-place of pilgrimage to the mausoleum of Che Guevara. In 1958, Che Guevara led and won the Battle of Santa Clara, the final battle of the Cuban Revolution. In addition to the revolutionary history, there are many other attractions of this city.
In Santa Clara you can visit: the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Teatro La Caridad (here Enrico Caruso performed), the Martí Library and the Leoncio Vidal Park are symbolic places of this modern city.

And one more famous resort of Cuba – Varadero .
The resort of Varadero is located on a peninsula and is a narrow long sandy spit 22 km long, crashing into the ocean, constantly cooled by tropical breezes. Located at a distance of 140 km east of the capital Havana, it is 3 hours away by car. A well-preserved coastal ecosystem and a diverse collection of local fauna, as well as a small population, attract tourists from all over the world to visit this paradise.
Now Varadero is one of the most famous beach resorts of all destinations in the Caribbean. It’s home to pristine shores, swaying palm trees and world-class hotels. At Varadero Beach, vacationers can spread out their beach towels and soak up the sun. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy playing at the Varadero Golf Club, which offers beautiful green areas with breathtaking ocean views from across the course.
After sunset, Varadero comes alive with a variety of nightclubs, cabarets and amphitheatres, the eye-catching Cabaret Tropicana ¬¬– is a must for travelers looking to experience the local nightlife.

The hotel also offers its guests a variety of sports and entertainment: beach volleyball, water polo, tennis, windsurfing, archery. Evening programs with live music.

Hotel Ocean Varadero El Patriarca 5*
The hotel is part of the Spanish chain h20. It can be safely called a premium class hotel. The architecture of this hotel is made in Italian style with a large, green area. Recommended for both family and romantic getaways. It is also located on the ocean. For guests planning a quiet secluded vacation, rooms of the Privilege category are recommended.

Hotel Melia Las Americas 5*

Hotel Melia Internacional Varadero 5*
If you are a tourist who loves new and modern hotels, then you are here. The hotel opened its doors to guests in February 2019. It is located near the marina Marina Gaviota. Big hotel and same area for guests of all ages. A chic SPA center on the top floor of the hotel with infinity pools. All 946 rooms have free Wi-Fi, which is important. With full confidence, the hotel can be called innovative.

Hotel Barcelo Solymar 5*
Good hotel and not expensive for 5*. Large selection of dishes. The area is also large with pools. It gives the impression of a home hotel, because the staff communicates with you as with their old friends. I recommend it to young people and families with children. Guests can use the infrastructure of the neighboring Occidental Arenas Blancas 4 * hotel – they are located on the same territory.

Buses run to Varadero from 09:00 to 20:00 and cost 5 cookies per person.
