Marbella is a city in the province of Malaga, 60 kilometers from the capital. The population is over 141,000 people.

Official website of the city http://www.marbella.es/inicio/

Due to the proximity of the mountains (Sierra Blanca) Marbella has a unique microclimate, here the water and air are always a couple of degrees warmer than in the rest coast.

The coast of Marbella stretches for 27 kilometers along the sea. Basically, the coast is sandy, very even, the height varies from 100 to 400 meters above sea level. Despite the fairly dense buildings, areas of sand dunes have been preserved to the east of the city.

Pictured is Sierra Blanca and beaches.

History.

Some historians believe that the territory of Marbella was inhabited during the Paleolithic and Neolithic, others believe that the city was founded by the Phoenicians. There is no doubt that the Romans lived in the city – many remains of buildings, Roman baths and bridges have been preserved.

Later these lands were conquered by Muslims, Muslims fortify the square built by the Romans, build a fortress, a lighthouse tower and a fence protecting the city. The city then had straight narrow streets, low buildings with large patios.

It is likely that the current name of the city comes from the Arabic name – Marbil-La.

Marbella passed into the hands of the Catholic kings on June 11, 1485. It was then that the Patio de los Naranjos (Square of Oranges) and the surrounding buildings were built.

Later in the 19th century, forges and workshops began to appear in these places, later they gave way to agricultural land, and only at the beginning of the 20th century tourism began to flourish in the city.

After the Second World War, Ricardo Soriano Scholz von Hermensdorff, Marquis de Ivanrei, appeared in Marbella and told his rich and famous friends about Marbella. Ricardo Soriano bought a plot of land between Marbella and San Pedro and built on it a tourist complex called Venta y Albergues del Rodeo, which started the development of luxury tourism. His nephew, Alfonso de Hohenlohe, acquired the Saint Margaret finca and made it at 1954 Marbella Club Hotel.

Members of the European families Bismarck, Rothschild, Thurn und Taxis, Metternich, Goldsmith, the Thyssen-Bornemisza family began to come to this hotel, giving Marbella the status of an expensive resort with world fame.

This status has been preserved to this day.

What to see.

Old Center.

Patio de los Naranjos (Orange Courtyard) , X 5th century

The old city consists of the ancient city walls and two historical districts of the city: Barrio Alto (Upper District) in the north and Barrio Nuevo (New District) in the east. Here, in the heart of the old city, is the aforementioned Plaza de los Naranjos, an example of urban development from the time of the Catholic kings.

There are three remarkable buildings around the square:0007 AyUntamiento, Building 1568),

Church of the Virgin Maria embodied ( LA Iglecia DE Santa De ENCARNACIO N, BARTROCCO STYA, BARTROCKED, Baroque, construction was started in 1618).

The church was rebuilt from an Arab mosque. After the capture of Marbella on June 11, 1485, King Fernando I Catolico ordered the consecration of mosques – to make Catholic churches out of them.

The then Bishop Don Luis Fernández de Cordoba ordered to complete the bell tower and place his coat of arms at the entrance to the temple. Construction began in 1618. Now the coat of arms is on the side looking at the Church Square (Plaza de la Iglesia).

On the wall of the church there is a tile (azulejo), on which, against the backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountain, there is an inscription “Peoples who had and are related to Marbella”. The following is a list – Swedes, Germans, Spaniards, Filipinos, Belgians, Dutch, French, Finns, British, Norwegians – representatives of all these nationalities now live here. And at the very bottom are those who inhabited these lands earlier, in different periods of history. These are Greeks, Arabs, Jews and Romans.

Next to the statue Saint Bernabe ( San Bernabe), patron saint of Marbella.

Here in the center are the remains of Arab fortress and its surrounding protective wall (X century), Chapel Saint Juan ( SAN Juan De 9000 DIOS, XVI century), Royal Hospital ( el Hospital Real) and old hospital Bazá n , all buildings are built in the Renaissance style.

San Pedro de Alc á ntara (San Pedro de Alcantara )

In the center of San Pedro de Alcantara, two buildings of the 19th century sugar factories have been preserved. Two more buildings of the same century were built in the colonial style, these are the church and the Villa of St. Louis (la Iglecia y la Villa de San Luis, the residence of the Marquis del Duero).

Near San Pedro, near the mouth of the Guadalmina River, are some of Marbella’s most important architectural monuments: the early Christian Basilica of Vega del Mar, the Roman baths of Las Bovedas and the watchtower of the same name.

Pictured is the boulevard in San Pedro, opened in December 2014, a little about it here Las Chapas)

In the eastern part of Marbella in the area of Las Chapas, at the mouth of the river Río Real, there are the remains of a settlement, possibly dating back to the 8th century BC. The Phoenicians lived here, which is proved by the plates, clay bowls, lamps, and other ceramic products of the Phoenicians found here.

There are also two signal towers, Torre de Rio Real and Torre de Ladrones. Of the tourist complexes, the most famous is the Entertainment City (Ciudad Residencial Tiempo Libre) and the old Marbella Hilton Hotel, now called Don Carlos. The hotel has five stars.

Nueva Andalucia

Nueva Andalucia is an area that began its development during the tourist boom. Previously, there were the remains of the Roman settlement Río Verde, and the former forge has been converted into irrigated land, here is the Botanical Garden, laid out in three different styles.

Puerto Banus

One of the most important ports on the Costa del Sol is Puerto Banus. This is a favorite vacation spot for many celebrities. The harbor itself is a large complex that includes a number of luxury brand boutiques, bars, fish restaurants and a casino.

Many large and impressive yachts are moored in this harbour. On two berths you can find space for almost 1000 yachts. Puerto Banus is also known for its vibrant nightlife and the many bars that often stay open until early in the morning.

When you visit Puerto Banus, you can’t help but see the huge bronze sculpture standing on the coast. This giant is a gift to the city from Zurab Tsereteli, installed here in 1993. The official name of the monument is “Escultura de La Victoria” (Monument to Victory).

Here, on the embankment is located Mermaid (Sirena de Puerto Banús) is a beautiful and elegant work of white marble, sculpture by Antonio Cañete.

Beaches

Marbella’s 27 kilometers of coastline are divided into 24 beaches. These beaches have different characteristics, but they are all urban or suburban beaches. The sand is golden or gray, the size of the sand is fine and medium, occasionally there are pebbles. Employment is average, high during the summer months.

The beaches of Puerto Banus and San Pedro de Alcantara have been awarded the Blue Flag for their excellent water conditions.

Gastronomy.

Marbella’s traditional cuisine is based on fresh fish. A typical dish from the province of Malaga is fried fish (fritura malagueña), here it consists of anchovies, mackerel, mullet and squid, among others.

Classic gazpacho and garlic soup are also characteristic. Among the confectionery products are olive oil cakes (tortas de aceite), borrachuelos – brushwood type cookies, and churros (churros).

Shopping.

Marbella offers excellent shopping opportunities as the city has a number of large shopping areas and specialty stores. The hypermarkets and large supermarkets in Marbella are complemented by small local art and craft shops, fashion boutiques, gift shops and malls.
