The Ultimate Puerto Rico Travel Guide • The Blonde Abroad

Because Puerto Rico is a US territory, visiting the country is extremely easy for American citizens. And yet, so many people have yet to experience all that it has to offer.

With it being in the Caribbean, it has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but it also has so much more. It has delicious food, the longest zipline in the world, legendary culture, and an incredibly hot nightlife scene, just to name a few.

What more could you want from a country that you don’t even need a passport to visit?

Best Time To Visit

Temperatures on the coast of Puerto Rico average 85 F, so it makes for the perfect year-round destination. That being said, some times are better than others to visit.

Because hurricanes are common in the tropics, Puerto Rico has had its share of hurricanes. It’s not immune to them (although, the last big hurricane before Maria in 2017 was back in 1931!). Hurricane season lasts from June through November so check the forecast before your vacation to avoid a serious natural disaster. However, it’s the cheapest time to visit!

December to May is peak season, so prices do rise a bit, but the sunshine and warm waters are worth the extra crowds you might encounter. No matter when you choose to visit, check out one of Puerto Rico’s many festivals! They have celebrations going on year-round, so look don’t miss a chance to party with the locals.

What To Expect

Language: English and Spanish are the two most widely spoken languages in Puerto Rico. However, don’t plan for locals to speak perfect English as they much prefer Spanish.

Currency: The official currency of Puerto Rico is the United States Dollar (USD), though they refer to the money as the peso or dollar.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit cards are widely accepted throughout Puerto Rico. You should have no problem using a card (mainly Visa and Mastercard) everywhere you go. If you would like some cash, there are ATMs all around Puerto Rico. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S territory, there’s a good chance that the ATMs are linked to a network that includes the bank you use at home.

Plugs: In Puerto Rico, the plugs are type A and B, the standard voltage is 120 V, and the standard frequency is 60 Hz. If visiting from the states, you won’t need a converter or adapter. I recommend buying a universal adapter (make sure it has surge protection) and using a converter for hairdryers and hot tools.

Safety: The beautiful island of Puerto Rico is considered safe to visit, especially in the larger cities that are popular with tourists. You might run into pickpocketing on public transportation, though it is not a threat that you need to actively worry about.
