Rio camuy cave park: Camuy River Cave Park, Puerto Rico – 2022 Update

Camuy River Cave Park, Puerto Rico – 2022 Update

Puerto Rico ⏐ Things to Do in Puerto Rico ⏐ Puerto Rico Caves  ⏐ Camuy River Cave Park

Be ready to be wowed as soon as you enter this wondrous natural attraction, tucked into the karst region of the north coast.  Rio Camuy Cave formally named Parque Nacional de las Cavernas del Río Camuy (Cavernas de Camuy)designated the First Natural Delight of Puerto is “one of the world’s largest cave networks”.  This is an excellent day trip that you can do on your own, about a 1 hour and a 20-minute drive from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Update:  We are happy to inform you that the Rio Camuy Cave Park has re-opened after a long wait since its closing since Hurricane Maria.  See hours and reservations number below under “Visiting Information”.

Top Rated Tours to Camuy River Cave Park

Rio Camuy This cave is the third largest underground cave system in the world, Rio Camuy runs through it.  The main part of the cavern is massive, with a ceiling over 10 stories high.  Photos can’t capture the beauty of this world-class wonder, Camuy River Cave Park is among the top ten attractions you can’t miss in Puerto Rico.  Parques Nacionales (Puerto Rico National Parks) manages this 300-acre park, offering walking tours in both English & Spanish, through this enormous cave.  This day will be part of one of the best day trips you can enjoy during your vacation in Puerto Rico, see our Best Things to Do in the North Region for more interesting activities and places to visit.

The Rio Camuy Cavern Tour

Note: This new tour offers a full-day Cave adventure that includes Camuy River Cave.

You will be given a set of headphones, available in Spanish and English.

Currently, the trolley is not being used or in working condition.  You’ll have to walk down to the entrance, a ride is offered for individuals with disabilities, seniors, and parents with small children.   As you walk down, the temperature gets cooler as you get near the nest of the mountain covered with a lush canopy that glistens to the rays of the sun.

There are a few steps before heading through the tunnel that leads to the entrance of the cavern.   The rest of the way you’ll be walking on concrete walkways with side rails.  Please read the suggestions below for tips on recommended attire and care when touring the cavern.

You’ll enter through Cueva Clara, you’ll walk through diverse tunnels, some reach as high as 170 feet and span as wide as 200 feet.  Depending on the time of day, heavenly sun rays come through the window pictured below.  As you go deeper into the cavern you’ll be wowed by the size and magnitude of this place.  Again, photos can’t really capture the splendor of the cavern, you have to be here to experience it.

Natural works of art such as spectacular stalagmites and stalactites were carved and formed by waters of the Camuy River, which is estimated to be approximately 45 million years old.

At one of the highest points of the cavern, you’ll see the largest stalagmite in Puerto Rico, an impressive sight.

Top Rated Cave Tours in Puerto Rico

+ Caves in Puerto Rico

As you walk, you’ll see nature at work, water streaming down the walls, forming more spectacular structures right before your eyes.  During your exploration, you’ll feel the heat of hundreds of sleeping bats and hear the sounds of Camuy River running underneath.

One of the best parts of the tour is Sumidero de Empalme (Empalme Sinkhole), a breathtaking magical spot where the sun rays shine through the sinkhole entrance 450 feet above.

This sinkhole feels more like an enchanted room.

Wellsprings gently flow down the walls to create a mesmerizing melody, you can’t help but think that perhaps this is the source of the fountain of youth Ponce de Leon so desperately sought.

The rays of sunshine radiating through the opening above make the waterfalls sparkle, the foliage glisten and the trees are perfectly lit by the true master landscape architect.  There’s so much beauty to take in at the Empalme Sinkhole.

Your tour guide will take you through the last part of the tour, a party for your senses if you’re into caves.  You’ll be able to observe more stalagmites and stalactites and hear some cool sounds.  You’ll walk through a tunnel and then over a concrete walkway suspended over the underground river, where the sounds of the water and bats seem to be right out of a Batman movie scene.  As a matter of fact, the sounds of bats used in a Batman movie were recorded at the Camuy Cave.

The lovely security guard at the gate told us that the park is closed by the government since Hurricane Fiona 2022 until further notice.
We traveled from Rio Grande (1hr 50 min) to see this place but unfortunately we were turned away. I would not plan to come here unless you confirm that they have opened.

Must see experience! Just plan ahead!

Aug 2022 • Family

What an amazing experience! We all loved it and walked around the caves in awe and wonder! It’s a must see/ do experience. Our guide was really knowledgeable and even took stops to take photos of families.

A few tips to make it amazing!
1. Must have closed toe shoes. We saw people being turned away who were wearing Sandals.
2. Your can’t book ahead. I recommend going early in the day, the guard at the kiosk will let you in if the next tour has space or will give you a ticket to come back for a tour later in the day. We arrived at 11 and got a ticket for the 1pm tour. We chose to do a quick trip to the Arecibo Observatory which was around 20mins drive away (will take longer if not used to PR hilly roads as it’s a high climb to the Observatory) and have our pre packed picnic.
3. Be prepared for around 20mins walk to get to the cave entrance. It’s steep down and steep up on the way back.
4. Take lots of water on the tour!
5. Ignore the bad reviews. The writers were obviously not prepared and/or forgot that’s it’s a cave system. 😀.
6. There are no lights down in the cave and some bits are very dark. Most people used their phones to light the way. 1-2 of our group had torches.

It’s good value for money, the guides are brilliant. The organization is rough around the edges, but you don’t go to experience that, you go to see an amazing cave system.

Nightmare at the cavern of Camuy Puerto Rico

Aug 2022 • Family

The cavern is unsafe, dark, no light inside and you have to walk to the cavern. It’s a 30 min dangerous walk to the cavern and double that on return because of the steep mountain terrain.
The group is so large for one person to handle so from the beginning she was yelling her directions which were confusing and unclear.
My worst experience in a tour do not recommend it.

Poor tourist destination

Jul 2022 • Couples

Arrived at 1 pm and the guard at the parking lot didn’t allow us in because it was full. We wanted to park elsewhere and go in and he denied us that possibility as well. He just said that people come in early and reserve all the spots for the day, so tours were no longer available. Very sketchy. Their reservation line doesn’t work either. They don’t accept online reservations.

Wear closed shoes and beware of rip off

Jun 2022 • Couples

We drove from San Juan to the caves – waited an hour plus for the cashier to open at 13:00 to be told that you cannot go in with saddles!!!
When we first got there nobody told us about don’t wait around unless you are wearing closed shoes!
To top it all up the lady at the kiosk said normally they sell closed shoes but they had run out.

What a rip off place.
We wasted 3 hours for nothing and the sanders we were wearing were more stable in mud and wet floor than any snickers

Beautiful experience, tour was great, no reservation needed

Apr 2022

My husband and I had a great experience at the caverns! The tour guide was excellent and everything was beautiful!
They DON’T require reservations. Online it says they open at 8, but the first tour doesn’t start until 9, and then they do them every hour or so. I would recommend going the earliest you can because it gets hot on the walk there and back, and there are less people the earlier you go.
The walk is about a mile down and back up, but they provide a ride back up if necessary. It was well worth our time and I would highly recommend making a stop here if you’ve never seen caverns before!

Nice outdoor option adventure

Feb 2022 • Couples

Nice outdoor site sightseeing options to do in PR aside from visiting the beaches. The park just recently open to the public after the damage cause by hurricane Maria in 2017. Not all cave are back open but the ones that are are worth seeing. The whole staff was very nice, professional and courteous.

Awesome cave

Jan 2022

My 18 year old son and I really enjoyed the short tour. It was shorter than we expected but the what a huge and interesting cave! The bats are gone – casualties of the hurricane but we saw some impressive non-poisonous spiders.

Just show up (earlier is better!) and they don’t even say anything about reservations which is good since they don’t answer the phone and you cannot buy tickets on the website.

To get to the cave, it is about a 20 min walk down and then back up but it is really pretty as you walk on the little road. Tours are at 11/1/2/3 and there might be one at 10 a.m. but we didn’t ask. We arrived just after 11 so we missed that tour but you can go into the nearby town of Lares and have the most amazing ice cream of your life (Heladeria Lares” and then come back. If you want to wait here for the next tour, there is a little gift area with the nicest woman who will give you any info you want, a little food stand with very good ice cream and clean bathrooms.

Worth the visit but be prepared

Jan 2022 • Family

Don’t bother calling to make a reservation. No one ever answered the phone despite calling multiple times. We showed up and brought tickets and waited with the next group. Be advised, you need to have closed toes shoes and no sandals. Otherwise you will not be allowed in the caverns. They sold $15 water shoes for anyone who did not come prepared. Their trolly isn’t working. You have to walk 1.5-2 hours…down steep hills and back up. I had a toddler with me and a stroller and it was doable. My mother uses a walker and it was too much for her. I do not recommend it for anyone with severe walking disabilities. They drove her down to the entrance but the walkway was too slippery and wet for her. The entrance only got darker, steeper, and more slippery. The cavern is not lit and very dark. This made walking with a stroller challenging but a more legit cave experience. I recommend bringing your personal head lamp or flashlight. The guide was friendly and very knowledgeable.

Another disappointment in Puerto Rico is to come to these caves and see the CLOSED sign. In general – do not repeat our mistakes, plan your trip more carefully. Too bad, the place must be beautiful.

Beautiful and mysterious

Nov. 2015 • For two

Finding the caves is not easy, because the signs that mark the entrance to the territory are small and inconspicuous. In general, we drove by car and for the most part at random, roughly understanding the direction. We took route 2 from San Juan and turned left onto road 129 and drove along it for a long, long time. Pay attention to the small round white-brown signs to the right of the road – they say (and in a circle, in small print) Cave Park Rio Camuy.
There is quite a large car park on the territory of the park. After you buy a ticket (13.5 bucks per adult), you are given a piece of paper with a number. The guide calls you by this number – visitors in groups of several people are put into wagons and taken to the caves themselves. There will be a Spanish and English speaking guide in the caves with the group. The problem is that the acoustics in the caves are strong, and if you stand three steps away, you can’t hear anything. That’s why I despaired and didn’t listen to anything. The caves themselves are, of course, impressive. Personally, I have never seen anything like this, so I got the most pleasant impressions. It’s just a pity that it’s not enough.
The tour lasted about an hour or twenty hours, the guide gave time to calmly walk and take pictures. Behind us, two more groups entered the cave, but since they were far away, they did not interfere with us. True, tourists from our own group interfered with us – three families of Indians came with children and directly with strollers, and their children yelled terribly. I wish you to get into the group only with adults.

Very cool place

March 2015 • Family vacation

Drive from san juan on a 100 km free road 2 hours. We drove in the morning there were no traffic jams, the roads were normal, only standing at traffic lights for a long time. It’s better to arrive early. I read that if you arrive late, there will be queues, we didn’t catch 10-12 queues. The procedure is as follows – you arrive, you are given a queue number, you pay, then you wait for the train. they don’t write about it anywhere, but they go every half hour. we arrived at the train at 10-01 and lost half an hour waiting for the next one. Then people ran up and at 10-30 there were already 2 trains of 30 people each. The train arrives at the cave, the guide leads through it, tells. The cave is really beautiful. Before that, we were impressed by the Carlsbad caves, but this one is no worse in impressions, it is different, well, smaller. The only negative is the number of people, all these 60 people go in a crowd, it can be problematic to take a picture. Arriving, we saw that the previous train (which we did not have time for) was half empty. So, it’s better to arrive earlier not to avoid the queue, but to avoid a large number of people.

Spectacular

July 2017 • Family vacation

This is an amazing view. The cave is very large and to know that this is only one portion of the whole system is incredible. The guides are very knowledgeable about everything and they give you an audio tour. We were family 9with 4 young children and teenagers and they all loved it. I recommend! Tip – good breakfast, and snacks to look forward to. They sell chips and ice cream but they have a long wait and the kids will get hungry! 🙂

Great location

May 2017 • With friends

The Rio Camuy Caves tour is truly affordable fun time for families. The cave is just beautiful. The tour is about an hour, but it’s not great to give. They take you to the cave entrance by tram. Once you’re in the cave it’s pretty run down and nothing is too high. The guides are very good and bilingual. Our guide answered a large number of questions from our group. They add information to the pre-record you carry. They are very well trained. You are taken to the cave in groups so be prepared to wait when you get there. We had to wait 45 minutes from the moment we bought the pass before the tour started. We went on a weekday around noon, so just remember to plan ahead. This is a great tour.

July 2017 • Family vacation

Arrive early. The parquet has many visitors and limits on the number of people they take during the day. The humidity level in the cave is 90%, so bring your hat if you don’t want to wash your hair. Use anti-slippery shoes, the ground is wet and very slippery. If you’re looking for an extra adventure, the park now offers postal health in general, shells in the park. The only downside is that the sink drain was part of the attractions and now the only people who choose to do health postcode so enjoy it.

Used to be the best landmark in Puerto Rico

July 2017 • Family vacation

Used to be the best attraction and my favorite in Puerto Rico. The charm is still there, but very sad to see the breakup. I think they need more staff and a complete overhaul. First, there is no one to greet you, completely chaotic and you don’t know what’s going on. Second you have to wait a lot of time to use the car that will take you to Cueva Clara. The third Video, which was previously presented in a small theater, is not available. (We stress burned the projector). The fourth toilets are in very poor condition, without adequate maintenance. Fifth, the carts are not ready for rain and you will get wet if it rains. I recommend you used the tour and we had a lot of patience. With a little inversion, this will be the best attraction on the island.

Great experience

July 2017

There were 8 of us: 3 children, 2 teenagers and 3 adults. We arrived early, around 8:15 on Wednesday. We had to wait for staff to pay for parking and then pay for entry which is $18 adults and $13 children. The experience was great, our guide was kid aware. Everyone in our group enjoyed it very much. I recommended it. The last time was over 20 years ago. After, we drove to Arecibo for lunch at Salitre Maison right on the beach.

This place is worth it

July 2017 • For two

As others have said, go early, they only let a certain guest in on the day. It’s not one of those things to catch a hot tour. Despite being surrounded by 3 other tour groups and you can’t get over yourself, these are marvelous caves and a must see attraction for the west side of Puerto Rico. Just an hour from “San Juan”.
