San Juan Castle

San Juan Castle, locally known as Castillo de San Juan, lies on a hill next to the town of San Juan de los Terreros, in the province of Almería in Spain. It is also known as Castillo de San Juan de los Terreros to distinguish it from its namesake Castillo de San Juan de los Águilas, some 10 kilometers to the north in Murcia.

San Juan Castle was built between 1760 and 1764, during the reign of Charles III of Spain, as a horseshoe-shaped artillery fort for coastal defense. Its initial design by Thomas de Warluzel d’Hostel, was later modified, improved and finalized in 1764 by Antonio Duce Oliveros.

It seemed like it was rebuilt in the last decades and now houses a small museum.

At present San Juan Castle can be visited for a fee. A nice little castle on a location with great views.

Castle of San Juan or Castle of Saint John, also known simply as Blanes Castle (Castillo de San Juan / Castell de Sant Joan de Blanes) is a historical monument, one of the main attractions and a symbol of Blanes.

The castle complex was built in the 13th century, although other fortifications already existed in earlier times. The privileged location of the castle – on a hill, turned it into the best place to observe possible enemy raids from the sea. nine0003

In addition to an observation post, Blanes Castle also served as a refuge for the inhabitants during enemy invasions.

The castle lost its strategic importance from the end of the 15th century and remained abandoned. The second stage of the decline of the castle fell between the 16th and 18th centuries, when the remains of the castle served as a quarry for the construction of a Capuchin monastery.

The revival of the castle began in the 19th century, when a military optical telegraph station was installed within its boundaries between 1849and 1859 years. The castle was also used as a refuge during the Spanish Civil War. In 1958, the tower was restored, and between 1987 and 1991, a project was developed and completed to restore part of the castle.

At present, only the tower and part of the wall remain from the castle. The castle is located on the top of the hill of the same name San Juan (turó de Sant Joan) and it is clearly visible from many points in Blanes and the surrounding area.

The castle tower has a height of more than 15 meters, a diameter of 7.25 meters and a wall thickness of 1 meter, as well as one entrance. nine0003

Due to its location, the castle also attracts tourists because it has an observation deck near it, which offers the best panoramic views of Blanes itself, the surroundings and the sea waters.

In front of the tower of the San Juan castle there is a small snow-white chapel of St. John or the chapel of San Juan (Ermita de Sant Joan de Baptista).

The chapel was already documented in the 13th century. In the 17th century it was a center of pilgrimage on the day of San Juan Bautista. At 19In 59, a restoration was carried out, during which the roof and interior frescoes were updated. In 1991, the chapel was restored together with the restoration of the castle.

Near the chapel there is an observation deck with panoramic views.

The small preserved area of the castle, which can be reached by stairs, also offers beautiful views.

View of the surroundings of Blanes and another attraction – the chapel of Santa Barbara (Ermita i torre de Santa Bàrbara).

You can get to the San Juan tower by car, there is a small parking lot behind the castle Rent a car in Spain… , or on foot from the center of Blanes, following the signs. During the hike to the castle, you can see no less beautiful panoramic views than from the observation decks of San Juan.
