Spanish music to listen to?
The first thing you need to do to start this sunny Spanish lifestyle is to make a playlist of monstrous Spanish jams. Music is an integral part of Spanish culture and nothing will change your mood faster than the hypnotic rhythms of flamenco, rumba and Latin American pop. You can run, you can hide, but your hips don’t lie.
Here are some tips to get you started.
Flamenco
Camaron de la Isla is one of the greatest flamenco singers of all time, credited with reviving flamenco music in the second half of the 20th century. His dreamy vocals will transport you to a beachside tapas bar, at least mentally, until you can go there in person and impress the locals by singing along and snapping your fingers. castanets . Speaking of which, here’s how you do it.
Start your day with Volando Voy and then put on a playlist of the best of legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía – a frequent collaborator of Camarón – and the Spanish way of life becomes second nature before you can say ole .
Catalan Rumba
Although many of the members of Gypsy Kings were born in Arles and Montpellier in southern France, the now world famous flamenco/salsa/rumba pop ensemble are the children of gypsy families who fled Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Their music is largely a product of their homeland.
Having sold over 20 million albums and touring non-stop since the band’s inception in the 1970s, they have helped put flamenco and rumba on the world map. So, some of the most memorable Spanish songs may have been written in France. But listen to terrific hits like Flying, Bamboleo, and one of the best versions of the world’s favorite song, and you’ll see that not much French lightheartedness made it into the final mix. 9Ol000 , Enrique Iglesias

Cook Spanish food at home
Spain: food. The good news is that cooking authentic Spanish cuisine for yourself at home is an option. In fact, quarantine is the best time to add some culinary strings to your onions.
Get out of quarantine knowing how to make the perfect tapas (or pintxos) and paella and your canceled trip won’t be in vain. So roll up your sleeves and do it Paco De Lucia, it’s time to get serious!
Pintxos vs tapas: the great debate
Fight!
First of all, we need to clarify some terminology. What exactly is the difference between tapas and pintxos? Short answer: no one knows, but it definitely depends on where you are in Spain and who you ask. Definitions vary, very much!
Generally speaking, pintxos are eaten in the Basque Country in northern Spain. Derived from the word prick , meaning to pierce, pintxos were traditionally served as a small dish attached to a piece of bread with a long cocktail stick. Tapas, on the other hand, have their origins in central Spain and are often served as a complimentary snack when ordering a drink.
So, tapas are free, and pintxos are pierced with a stick – of course. Not so fast! Given the ever-evolving and cross-cutting nature of language and culture, and the recent creative revival of Basque cuisine in particular, pintxos are not always served pricked on a cocktail stick, and tapas are certainly not always free.
Even more confusing is that in many parts of Spain (e.g. Madrid) a tapa is just a small portion of a quarter-sized dish, and ‘ spike ‘ can mean a little, such as ‘ un pincho de paella ‘ – a bit of paella.
So it doesn’t really clarify anything. The meanings are nuanced and vary from region to region. But at least now you know it. The important thing is that pintxos and tapas are usually small tasty meals best enjoyed over drinks with friends and this applies equally to video chats during quarantine.0003
So with all that in mind, here are some great and easy recipes to impress your friends with your newfound Spanish lifestyle during quarantine.

Make your own Spanish cocktails
Sangria
All this cooking is thirsty work. And there’s a small chance that you also planned to have a drink or two (or more) during your holiday in Spain. So, here are some sunny Spanish drinks you can drink at home to make this lockdown go faster!
Many people’s first stop in Spain is a tapas bar with patatas bravas and sangria, and rightly so. But making your own sangria is relatively easy, as shown in the video below.
You’ll need fresh oranges, lemons, apples, some fruity red wine, brandy, some ice, twisty (reusable!) straws, and some of those mini umbrellas. But here’s an expert to guide you through it.
How to cook Sangria
Clara
Another summer favorite in Spain is the beer and lemonade concoction known as Clara. Follow this tricky recipe to feel like a master mixologist.
How to brew beer Clara:
Ingredients: cold beer, cold lemonade, sunglasses.
- Step 1. Mix the first two ingredients together .
- Step 2. Apply sunglasses to face .
- Step 3. Drink the mixture.
Agua de Valencia
Basically mimosa lives its best life – you need to use a little more alcohol alchemy to create this Valencian libation. A savory blend of orange juice, cava and vodka (or gin), Agua de Valencia was invented by artist Constante Gil, who at the time was the patron of the derisively named Cafe Madrid in Valencia.
The story goes that some visitors from Bilbao annoyed him by ordering cava all night and calling it Agua de Bilbao. So Hill showed them how people celebrate in the south by adding some vodka and orange juice to their drinks and called it Agua de Valencia.
Pouring drunk people with a lot of booze paid off and the name stuck. But Gil couldn’t trademark it because of its versatility, and so he didn’t make any money from his invention. Honor his memory by adding this boozy creation to your cocktail arsenal. Breakfast of Champions.
Kalimotho
A crime against red wine? An abomination that should stay in the 1970s? A great way to make sure no one steals your drink? Or a perfectly refreshing drink? Kalimotxo shares opinions like a food warmer. It all depends on whether you think mixing red wine and carbonated cola is a good idea or not. Make up your mind about it!
orujo
If you decide to take a dip in Kalimotxo and now regret your life choice, you can wash it off with some Orujo! This pure spirit from northern Spain has a typical local alcohol content of over 50%. This should be enough to erase all memories of Kalimotho from your taste buds. However, an unintentional siesta might be on the cards!
Speaking of cards, a great way to enhance these Spanish drinks is to play traditional Spanish card games. Chinchón is a popular game similar to Gin Rummy in many ways, with objectives such as creating sets, groups or runs, matching cards, etc. Mus is another card game that in true Spanish style includes many verbal strategies between each hand.
Note: To play these games you will need a Spanish deck, which interestingly does not include the numbers 8 or 9in the deck.
Spanish TV Shows and Books
For total immersion, it’s always a good idea to have a Spanish-language TV on in the background while you drink orugio in your pajamas. Luckily, there’s no shortage of rousing soap operas on YouTube to help you train your ear for the idiosyncrasies of Spanish pronunciation and some of the more… dramatic sensibilities of the Spanish way of life.
- Pasion de Gavilanes – Colombian soap opera, which can be fully explained by the fact that the trailer is self-parodying.
- Ana y los 7 – A wholesome, touching story about a stripper who accidentally finds a job as a babysitter in a luxurious mansion where a wealthy widower lives with his seven children.
- Nobody lives here – Essentially the Spanish equivalent of Friends What else do you need to know?
Spanish literature
Quarantine is also a great opportunity to read seriously. With so many Netflix shows to go through, it might seem outlandish. But along with incredible food, infectiously catchy music, and some of the most impressive architecture in the world, Spain has also given birth to some of the best writers in Western literature. All plans for the future of traveling to Spain will be greatly improved if you check out some of these amazing games in advance.
Cathedral by the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones
A gripping historical novel set in 14th-century Barcelona, at the height of the city’s trade and military power in the Mediterranean. Netflix actually released their own big-budget original adaptation of the story called Cathedral of the Sea , so you can get the best of both worlds!
Shadow of the wind (Shadow of the wind) Carlos Ruiz Zafon
With over 15 million copies sold worldwide, La Somra del Viento is one of the best selling novels of all time. A touching story within a story, the narrative jumps back and forth between 1911 and the Spanish Civil War. This is an epic tale of love and loss, and you can set aside some of that toilet paper ration to dry your eyes.
Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes
If ever there was a book that offers an optimistic dose of escapism and a desire for simpler times, this is Cervantes’ masterpiece, Don Quixote . Widely regarded as the original modern novel from which all others can be traced, this tale of delusional romanticism of the past has been translated into almost every conceivable language and has sold half a billion copies. Let it sink in
Practicing conversational Spanish
Nothing opens up a new culture like learning its language. The good news these days is that you don’t have to leave your home to do it. With courses available like Duolingo and Babel, and cool language exchange apps like HelloTalk and HiNative, you have no excuse not to have a basic knowledge of Spanish by the time your next holiday to Spain arrives. With 450 million Spanish speakers worldwide, it’s bound to come in handy at some point. Charge up your Spanish lifestyle with these handy starter phrases that you can use when you’re in Spain or just confuse your Skype friends.
