Utuado Puerto Rico – What To Do, Where To Stay, And Where To Eat In a Weekend

When John and I decided to travel to Puerto Rico, we did a fair amount of research into our plans. It isn’t a very large island, yet there is so much to explore! We chose to call Utuado our home-away-from-home for the weekend.

We found an amazing Airbnb on Caonillas Lake WITH A HOT TUB! Once we saw the Lago Caonillas Lake View House we instantly made our decision to visit Utuado and booked it for two nights.

We chose Utuado for its nearby attractions like Cerra De Punta, Torro Negro State Park, El Cemi Museum, and all of the white canyons. Even though we only made it to one of the later, we loved every moment of our time in the Puerto Rico mountains.

We arrived in Utuado on Friday evening, and our first stop was Sabor Isleño by Los Paneles. We passed it along the highway, then turned around to go back. It provided the best introduction to the town we could have had!

The meal was served by the owner of the restaurant who spoke decent English and helped curate the most perfect meal.

Mojitos from Sabor Isleno.

Mofongo from Sabor Isleno.

He introduced us to Mofongo (mashed plantains) and Sorullos (fried plantain chips) which we had with almost every meal! We enjoyed mojitos, the view of Utuado, and the atmosphere until nearly sunset! It was a wonderful dinner.

After that delicious meal, we made our way up the mountains toward Lago Caonillas and our Airbnb. We timed it all perfectly so that we weren’t driving at night, because the roads are narrow and winding!

Driving through Utuado.

Driving around in Puerto Rico was an experience in and of itself read all about what happened with our rental car in our “How Safe Is It To Drive In Puerto Rico?” blog post HERE and watch our YouTube video below!

The view from our first night in Utuado.

Once we were inside the Lago Caonillas Lake View House, we knew we could not have booked a better place! This house is awesome! It features a beautiful view of the lake and mountains. Of course, the hot tub was a major amenity!

This wasn’t our only amazing airbnb in Puerto Rico, we also stayed at two great places in Old San Juan – which you can see more about here!

We warmed up the hot tub and unpacked our gear before starting to plan out an itinerary for the next day. We sat outside and gazed at the stars while reading DiscoverPuertoRico.com’s article about Utuado. We did a little more research before deciding to go west and visit some coffee farms, learn about the native people of the land, and do a little hiking.

The next morning, we woke up and soaked in the hot tub before grabbing a quick breakfast of beans, rice, and fried pork, from Cafe El Bohio.

After breakfast, we visited Cafe Gran Batey,  a family-run coffee farm nestled high up in the mountains, and we could not have timed our arrival any better.

The view from The Lago Caonillas Lake View House!

Lotty, who gave our tour, did not speak English! Fortunately, another family was on the premise, and their father spoke English well enough to translate.

Touring Cafe Gran Batey.

The coffee is delicious!

If you want to learn more about Cafe Gran Batey, check out the detailed blog post here!

Fresh coffee beans.

The tour and first cup of coffee were free, and we learned a lot in the few hours we spent there. Lotty showed us all about the coffee growing and roasting processes, then she walked us through their orchard and showed us how they use composting and fruit for sustainability.

Near the orchard, she described the drying process and let us run our hands through large trays of dried beans. It was an awesome afternoon learning about and tasting amazing coffee. Once we said goodbye, we continued down the highway to our next educational stop.

Petroglyphs at the Caguana Ceremonial Indigenous Heritage Center.

The Caguana Ceremonial Indigenous Heritage Center
was an archeological site where ritual grounds of the Taino people were discovered. We learned that this site is believed to have been used not only for ceremonial and religious purposes but also in the course of everyday life.

Batey is an ancient competitive sport, and the site is believed to have also hosted ceremonial games. We walked around the petroglyphs until an afternoon rain shower rolled in, then we moved under the hatching of a hut to talk with the Ranger on duty.

Walking around one of the Batey courts.

You can see more from this interesting site in our YouTube video here!

Passion fruit mojitos at La Placita del Vivi.

We had every intention to also visit The Tanama River and Hacienda Horizonte, but the afternoon storm made us head back toward Utuado to have a bite to eat. We pulled off the highway at La Placita del Vivi and had more mofongo and mojitos while watching the rain.

That night, we planned to explore many more places on our last day in Utuado.

Read about all of the Puerto Rican mofongo and mojitos we had in the “Where We Found Great Meals in Puerto Rico” post here!

Our first stop of the next day was Cañon Blanco. A stunning area that had been recommended through a Facebook group called Girls Love Travel. When we pulled up, we knew that we had received great advice! We were very excited to look for petroglyphs along the stunningly bright, white canyon walls.

Hiking in Canon Blanco.

The first view of Canon Blanco.

Looking for petroglyphs!

We walked up and down the canyon crossing the river when we could, looking for the carvings, but never found any!

Ultimately, we didn’t care, because the scene was unbelievable. The lush mountains surrounding the canyon were a perfect backdrop for the large, rocky canyon. We took a dip in the river before heading back to our car for our next adventure.

If you want to see more from our adventure through Canon Blanco, check out our YouTube video below!

We tried to continue to our next stop, La Piedra Escrita, but were halted when the road we had been following on Google Maps ended! The pavement turned to jungle floor, and we had nowhere to go. It was quite scary and was only worse when one of our tires popped.

We knew it would be best to act with haste, and John replaced our tire so fast that I swear he could have been trying out to be a NASCAR pit crew member.

Spare tire equipped, we drove out to a maintained road and called Enterprise Rent-A-Car. They put us in touch with a partner shop in Arecibo, and since we had paid for the insurance, we didn’t have to pay a dime.

This event completely derailed every remaining plan for exploring Utuado. Instead, we headed north toward Arecibo.

Read about what it was like to drive around the Puerto Rican rainforest in this more detailed driving blog post, here!

We had SO much else we wanted to see while in Utuado, here are just a few of the place we wanted to visit:

– Cerro de Punta (PR’s highest point)
– Chorro de Doña Juana Waterfall Or Cascada Las Delicias
– Museo De Nuestros Martires
– El Cemí Museum
– La Piedra Escrita

We loved every minute of our time in Utuado, and have ever intention to come back to explore more one day!
