Finding Pink Lakes in Cabo Rojo: How to Visit the Salinas of Puerto Rico

Stop the presses: there are pink lakes in Puerto Rico! You can find them in Cabo Rojo, on the southwest side of the island.
I recently saw pink lakes for the first time in Mexico and was amazed.
Pink is a magical color as is, but sprinkled throughout a body water, which we automatically associate with the color blue, makes the world seem even more whimsical.
The phenomenon of pink water is caused by the salinity of salt flats.
Pink waters are often found by beaches as the coloration is caused by the presence of a specific type of shrimp. Fun fact — it’s the same kind of shrimp flamingos eat.
If you want to see this phenomenon firsthand, you can easily do so on a day trip from the island’s biggest cities.
Here’s what you need to know before you go.
Where are the pink lakes?
The pink lakes are off PR-301 in Cabo Rojo.
They are less than 2 1/2 hours from San Juan and close to major cities like Mayaguez, Ponce and Aquadilla.
I stayed in Boqueron and it was only a half hour away with a bustling downtown area. I included a map above for your reference.
Stick to the main highways as much as possible.
This may require you going around the perimeter of the island versus through it, but it actually saves you time since the landscape is filled with dark, winding mountain roads throughout the middle.
If you need a place to plug into the GPS, look for the “Faro Los Morillos.”
It’s straight on PR-301 to get there so you’ll pass the pink lakes on the way, they’ll be to your right.
There’s no official parking since it’s not a designated tourist attraction but a working salt flat.
If you start to pass designated parking areas, you’ve reached the trails for the lighthouse and went too far.

Best time to visit
You can see the pink lakes year-round, but you need to go on a sunny day to see the pink hue of the water at its most vibrant.
This is not a good rainy day activity.
There’s no wildlife in the water, but it’s so salinated that I wouldn’t recommend swimming in it or even dipping your toes in.
Aside from the fact that you’ll disturb the quality of the water, it’s a working salt flat so commercial salt will be harvested from the area and you don’t want to taint or disturb it, since that would likely prompt the salt company to start prohibiting access to the space.
As with all places you visit on the island, be respectful and leave it more clean than you found it if possible.
About the Salinas in Puerto Rico
Currently, there are minimal regulations in place.
There are no guides or cost of admission to visit; it’s free to enter.
It’s uncertain how long the salt flats will remain open to the public, so your best bet is to take advantage now and visit while you can.
Because of this, the entrance is not clearly marked and you might feel like you’re trespassing somewhere you shouldn’t be.
Depending on when you go, you’ll likely see a handful of other people there. Aim to stroll the grounds while causing the least amount of damage as possible.
Not all of the salt flats in the area are pink.
If you drive around the coastline you’ll see different shades and can choose where you want to stop along the way.
The brightest point, however, is not far after a large green observation tower, and is usually marked by employees working the premises as well as a cluster of cars parked across the street.

Fill your life with moments, not things ? How picture perfect is this scene from the pink lakes in Puerto Rico? ??? As I head back to New York, I cant help but marvel at how much I discovered in just two short weeks on the island. From secluded beaches to the (second) longest zipline in the world, it was a nonstop adventure! Have I convinced you to visit yet?? ? . . . . . . . . #puertorico_greatshots #puertoricoisladelencanto #girlslovetotravel #damestravel #latinaslovetravel #travelpuertorico #puertoricotravel #puertoricotourism #visitpuertorico #carribeantravel #caribbeantrip #puertoricotrip #travelwriters #girlswhotravelsolo #girlslovetravel #adventuregirls #girlsadventure #tripgirl #girlstraveltale #girlsborntotravel #pinklakes #worldtravelparadise #worldtraveler #travelgirlscollective #puertoricanpride #ilovepuertorico #travelfemme #femmetraveller #sidewalkerdaily #heavenonearth

The best way to access this destination, and to peruse the island at your leisure, is to rent a car.
There is no public transportation outside the metro areas, and even then routes are limited.
I rented a car with Charlie Rental Car in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
This is my second time renting with them; previously I’d booked a car at their Aquadilla location. Both times went smoothly.
They require a small deposit but reimburse you once you return the car without issue.
There will be tolls along the way.
I suggest you pay the flat fee to activate the easy pass toll service and pay for your charges afterwards, once they’re all accrued.
Be careful with driving. The roads can be dangerous and narrow with other cars driving quickly, even when turning blind corners.
I was warned of carjackings when I arrived but had no issues. Be smart and hide any valuables.
Always lock your car and try to park near others.

Other things to do in the area
If you continue along the main road by the salt flats, you’ll hit the beautifully maintained Los Morrillos Lighthouse and secluded beach called Playa Sucia.
The name is misleading since “sucia” means dirty but the water is absolutely pristine.
This makes an excellent day trip that includes hiking, a natural bridge and sunbathing by the Caribbean Sea.
If you want, you can bring a bike to explore the trails in depth.
Bring water with you and be on the lookout for the man selling helado (ice cream) on the beach.
It’s cash only, but is a much-needed treat on hot days.
If you’re looking for something more substantial to eat after a long day out in the sun, stop by Boqueron on your drive back.
The seaside eats are fresh, and you can find great deals like 1/2 dozen oysters for $3.
Till next time, safe travels!

Puerto Rico: 10 Enchanting Sights for your Next Trip
Exploring the Island of Enchantment
Puerto Rico is one of the most unique Islands in the Caribbean. La Isla del Encanto is brimming with beautiful beaches, lush tropical rainforests, and prodigious mountains and caves. It is relatively small and easy to drive across in just a few hours. The island contains a plethora of natural landscapes, interesting history and diverse culture. With such an enormous variety of activities, it’s easy to see why the “Rich Port” is a secret gem of paradise. I’ll guide you through some of the greatest, absolute must see sights for your next trip to the Island of Enchantment.
10. The Bacardi Factory
Puerto Rico has a legendary nightlife mixed with reggaeton music, salsa dancing, and delicious beverages. No drink is more synonymous with that culture than Rum. And what better place to taste an assortment of tasty concoctions than the largest Bacardi distillery in the World. Go on a guided tour of the famous Casa Bacardi and learn how it became a house hold phenomenon. Included is a pair of mixed cocktails of your choice.
9. Puerto Rico Beaches
Obviously one of the highlights to an island paradise must be the beaches. And Puerto Rico does not disappoint. Some of the greatest beaches in the World are scattered all over the island. Aguadilla’s Crash Boat beach in the West, Cabo Rojo’s Playa Sucia and La Parguera’s Playa Rosada in the South, San Juan’s Condado Beach and Carolina’s Isla Verde up North, and a local spot Luquillo beach just East of that. Most have unbelievably light fluorescent blue and calm waters. Whichever direction you choose, you shall be rewarded with coastal euphoria.

8. Viejo San Juan
Also known as Old San Juan, the colonial inspired architecture is a charming sight to behold. Wander down the quaint, colorful streets for some shopping, delicious coffee, and authentic Boricua meals. Stop by La Placita when you’re in the mood for a night out and dance ‘till the sun comes up.
*Viejo*San*Juan*Calle Cristo
7. El Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal
While you’re in Viejo San Juan, check out the 500 year old Fort, Fuerte San Felipe del Morro for an immersive history lesson. The fortress is an impressive structure and offers amazing views as well. Right next door is one of the largest Spanish Fortresses on the Western Hemisphere, Castillo de San Cristobal. You can access both for the same admission ticket. They are open from 9am – 6pm so plan accordingly.
*El*Morro**
6. Cueva Ventana
For some outdoor adventures, head to Arecibo’s scenic “Window Cave”. The guided tour arms you with a hard hat and a flash light for traversing the murky sub terrane. At certain points of the Cave you can spot wall carvings left over from the aboriginal Taino tribe. That moment when you feel the light from Cueva Ventana pierce the darkness is marvelous. The Panoramic views of the forested landscape are sublime. Avoid walking through the center of the cave unless you like bat poo.
*Cueva *Ventana
5. El Observatorio de Arecibo
Located nearby to Cueva Ventana, The
Arecibo Observatory holds the
second largest radio astronomy telescopes in the World. There are
exhibits on display that are both informative and fun. After a
cinematic presentation, gaze at the gargantuan radio dish in all of
its glory. A scene from the James Bond Golden
Eye movie was also shot here.
AreciboObservatory
4. Isla Culebra
Right off the Coast of Puerto Rico is a small Island with one of the best beaches in the World. Culebra’s Flamenco beach is known for its turquoise waters and palm tree filled hills. You may also find a few artistically placed old Navy tanks scattered across the island. The cheapest way to arrive on the island is by ferry. Reserving a ticket online is the easiest and way to do it, otherwise you’ll have to get there super early and hope it isn’t full. The departure point is the ferry terminal in Ceiba. Another option is by airplane if you prefer to travel in the skies.
3. Las Salinas
Located on the south-west coast of Cabo Rojo, is a huge area of salt flats. Las Salinas contains picturesque pink waters that elegantly flow with a gentle breeze. Definitely needs to be seen in person to appreciate its beauty.
*****
2. Isla de Vieques
Another small island off Puerto Rico’s main land, Vieques is truly a hidden gem. Mosquito Bay embodies one of the brightest bioluminescent bays on the Planet. Thanks to the micro-organisms that live there, the night waters glow with a blueish-green radiance. Sign up for a kayaking tour and behold the spectacle of enchantment. The ferry is also the best option to get to Vieques, with a similar schedule also leaving from Ceiba.
1. El Yunque
Puerto Rico is the personification of nature’s beauty. The epitome of natural wonders lies within the heart of El Yunque National Rainforest. Acknowledged as the United States’ only tropical rainforest, it is an Eden of biological diversity. Sheathed within an oasis of trees, El Yunque holds waterfalls, hiking trails, and hundreds of unique animal and plant species. Exclusive to the island is the Coqui, Puerto Rico’s indigenous tree frog. You’ll recognize it by its distinct (and loud) mating call. Embrace the chorus of symphonic whistles as you explore the tropical utopia. The most thrilling experience to enjoy is ziplining amongst the enchanting rainforest scenery hundreds of feet off the ground. Feel the rush of freedom!
*Chase those waterfalls
Puerto Rico is a magical island filled with wonder at every edge of its domain. There are activities for city lovers, naturists, and everyone in-between. It’s impossible to absorb it all in a single trip. An island filled with resilient people and an amazing culture. A paradise that will always be near and dear to my heart. I hope you get to experience everything the island of enchantment has to offer someday. Until then, travel, think different, and keep leveling up!
*All starred photos are from my incredibly talented sister, who did a spectacular job at capturing the pure enchantment of Puerto Rico
Please check out all the great photography she has to offer on instagram!

Cats walking in the lobby… They say q is in remodeling but what you see is dereliction, soda machines and abandoned things.
Ugly old rooms, corks only have a sheet, moldy lamps, the floor you walked on and dust stuck in.

We all had allergies in the room. The room has a very old style and needs to be updated. The bathroom looks like you’re in a mystery movie. The restaurant was closed. The first day we ordered more shampoo and were given 2 more osea, we had 3 for only 4 people. On the second day we didn’t get shampoo and they didn’t change the towels. TV very small and old. The pool is quite nice, but this hotel is only to go to bed and already.

As Maria Survivor Hotel Pericis opened the doors there for many families. Yes, they work on the generator is not cheap. They didn’t get hurt as well, however they continued to keep the doors there open. We were served with respectful kindness. Every day I have clean towels great service and the staff works with a smile. Of course everyone has a bad day, I’m guilty of that. But, having lost everything, gave me a new appreciation for the simplest things. I’ve traveled and stayed in 5 star hotels that didn’t treat me 5 stars. Kudos to Pericis Hotel you are the best.

The place needs cleaning, maintenance and attention. In the lobby who told me is the owner’s family, release his situations say that only 4 employees after the hurricane and do not provide supplies. However, if my business is related to tourism, customer service, and I receive federal assistance, I must do the same to keep the place in good condition. The deterioration that you are not currently associated with the hurricane, is due to the time you do not give the required maintenance. The room smelled of mushrooms, the walls in the room were dirty and the bureau filled with dust.

Not for weekends (and maybe even week days) as they rent their big hall and the music blasts until midnight or even at 3:00 a. m. M. And all parking lots get full if there is a feature. They told us that we can’t hear the noise from the AC on. This is wrong. We had to pack and leave at 10:00 p.m.
