DO NOT BOOK with TRAVESIAS Isleñas Tours
Dec 2022
I spent a lot of time finding expensive flights, hotel and taxi’s for one night to specifically see the Bioluminescent Bay which I booked 5 days in advance. I then receive a text message 4 hours before the scheduled tour time saying, “We are overbooked and will be refunding you your money, Sorry for any inconvenience” Luckily my hotel staff found me a more reputable and professional tour company (Taino) who accommodated us. The Bio bay tour is a great experience.

This experience is magnificent, and it’s not quite like the photos, which suggest it’s blue. When we were there, the dinoflagellates were glowing an almost pure white in the dark water, mimicking the stars out overhead. It is hard to describe the awe of seeing something so rare and beautiful.

Truly horrifying experience DO NOT GO
Jul 2022 • Couples
Vieques kayak tour group is the worst. First, the bus ride into the bay is like a raiders of the lost ark ride. Hitting some potholes is no biggie, but it was truly dangerous in an ancient rickety bus banging around so severely it was like being in 100 accidents. Then you get there and the stench is beyond anything disgustingly imaginable. Like vomitously indescribably horrible.
Then, to get to the kayaks, you have to walk for fifteen feet or so in that bog of stenchy mud and water, so gross, up to your calves, and you cannot wear shoes, as they will be stuck. They do not warn you of this in advance of the tour. They just say, when you get there, to take off your shoes as they will get muddy, not, you will slug through a foot of swamp muck and have it on you for an hour. Honestly, I think literally having feces to walk through and spread on my legs would have been less gross.
The kayak was the small, sit on top shallow kind. You had to paddle for an hour total time. So, all that, was it worth it? Not at all. Not one bit. The phenomenon is pretty boring. A little bit of white light sparkling when your oar or hand hit the water. Big woop, so what. Nothing like the pics online, no visible glow in the water, or colors, just some white light for a second, when the water is touched.
When the guide talked, for what seemed like forever, about the mango trees that somehow cause or support the algae stuff, he said if they didn’t exist we would not be here tonight. I thought – frigging trees. Now, I am praying I don’t get some swamp muck skin infection.
Oh, and it poured rain on us for a while too, just for added crap.

We did the Mosquito Bay tour with Aqua Sunset Tours the same night friends did a Fajardo bio bay tour with another company. Our experience was so much better in bio lum concentration and guide experience – totally worth the overnight to Vieques and glad we got to experience the Vieques’ vibe we would have otherwise missed.

Great Experience
Jul 2022 • Friends
Was apprehensive at first because the transport van was pretty beat up and the road in was something from a scary movie, but the experience was amazing. Our guide put our non-kayakers at ease (me) and she shared information on the history and biology of the bay. She took photos for our group and was entertaining. There were other staff to help us in & out of the water. I recommend the experience.

Dec 2022 • Family
My family group of 11 rented clear glass canoe-style kayaks one evening for the most wondrous part of our vacation. We paddled around the bay with 2 guides who were knowledgeable and entertaining, learning about the microorganisms responsible for the neon green glow, about the role of mangrove trees, and even about the clearly visible constellations. Our guide educated us in areas of history, environment, and biology in a most lively and engaging manner. The whole experience was incomparable.

Disappointing and scary
I normally don’t write negative reviews but I’m trying to save the next person from making the same mistake I did.
Here’s what this trip was not: relaxing kayaking in gorgeous luminescent water.
Here’s what it was: Kayaking in pitch black darkness through a narrow mangrove canal with branches sticking out every which way, and alongside oncoming kayaks, so that the entire 20-30 minutes of actually getting to the luminescent water was more tense than fun. Finally arriving at the “luminescent” part of the water and realizing that it’s not glowing at all but only sparkles when you lean out of the kayak and agitate the water with your hands. Total disappointment!
OK, it was kind of cool, but totally not worth the time or money spent to experience this. Oh, it was also a 45-55 minute drive out to the bay from our hotel and another 45-55 minutes back. I think the tour company (we booked with Tortuga through our hotel) could have done a better job letting us know what to expect, but I’m sure they don’t because who would book a tour if they told the truth about it?!?

Transparent bottom kayaks add an additional level
Dec 2022
This is the next best thing to swimming in the bay, which is no longer allowed (we were able to do it on a tour 20 years ago). In addition to seeing the luminescence from kayak strokes and a wake (in your boat and others), you are on top of sparking stars throughout. Aloui (spelling?) and Jimmy were excellent guides, not talking too much, helping us acclimate to the dark, informative, and making sure that we enjoyed the experience.
Eduardo and Martinez were big helps getting into and out of the kayaks, and keeping things organized.
Do come prepared to get wet as there is some water in the bottom of the boats. I do suggest a dark night (we went on a new moon) as the luminescence is more visible). There is more light around the bay than I remember 20 years ago, but still dark with a great star and planet show. The bands of milky way are readily visible.

Awesome, must do
Booked our trip thru Viator, small group of 5 double kayak. Went out into shallow bay (easy paddling), unbelievable sight of glowing microorganisms as you paddled. Make sure you do not go on full or bright moon night. The stars were amazing as well do to lack of lights

Absolutely magnificent. Go when the moon phase is down. The sky is riddled with stars! And the water reflects that beauty with the shimmers of the dinoflagellate. The water lights up for a few seconds with each stroke or splash. Definitely a life bucket list goal.

Really Worth it and Guides were Professional and Safe
Nov 2022
We showed up across the street in the open parking lot and met everyone. We took the bus trip to the entry area and walked through the deep mud barefoot to get into the kayaks and were a little bit nervous. Then it started to pour down rain. I was really nervous as I could not see and had my little girl in the kayak with me, but the leaders were kind and professional and gathered us together safely until the short 5 minute storm passed. And what reward came!!! The stars and the beautiful luminescent water was a once in a lifetime experience! Getting to see the fish swim through the water and light up was magical and like something from a Disney movie! Really incredible! Pro tips: 1) Stay in an AirBnb on the south side of the island on the Malecon side 2) El Blok restuarant that we ate at prior was yummy 3) Do the later tour where it is darker 4) Check and make sure the moon is not full when you are going – the darker the night, the better 5) Bring towels to dry off for when you get back in case you get rained on. Overall, this was a highlight of our trip. We enjoyed the whole island of Vieques – the beaches, wild horses and the Ceiba tree! What a great place!

Luminous bay is in danger. // primerahora.com
The Government of Puerto Rico takes under protection one of the wonders of the local nature – the luminous Mosquito Bay (Bahia de Mosquito, Puerto Mosquito), located on the south coast of the island of Vieques (Vieques). According to environmentalists, the level of its pollution has approached critical.
Mosquito Bay is one of the country’s most popular natural attractions: its water glows thanks to special micro-organisms. But a large flow of tourists leads to pollution of the reservoir, and its inhabitants are very sensitive to any chemicals, including deodorants and suntan creams on the skin of swimmers. nine0013
In the near future, officials will develop a program to protect the bay, according to BuenoLatina.ru. It is planned that travelers will be able to visit the Mosquito and other bioluminescent waters of Puerto Rico, such as La Parguera and Laguna Grande, with special passes, and the number of tourists will be limited. The authorities also plan to clean the waters of pollutants and create a new route to the bay, more convenient and safe.

Despite the difficult financial situation in the country, not everyone is ready to save on vacations. And some people were even born under a lucky star and have not yet experienced the delights of a change in the ruble exchange rate. For those who have long been tired of the classic St. Tropez and Costa Smeralda, there are suggestions for the most fashionable summer vacation options from the main experts on this issue. Where to go in the summer of 2015 is advised by the authors of the luxury travel website Jetsetter.com. nine0013
Trancoso, Brazil
Trancoso, Brazil
Photo: Alex Robinson / JAI / Corbis / East News
All prosperous Brazilians vacation in the former fishing village, now the bohemian mecca of Trancoso. Local beaches (the most beautiful in the country) were chosen by hippies in the 1970s, but now you can easily meet here, for example, Gisele Bündchen reclining in a sun lounger.
Things to do: drink caipirinha after another, marvel at the unusual cuisine of Bahia (bean fritters?), play football with the locals, or just hang out on the terrace of your boutique hotel. nine0013
Milan, Italy
Everyone interested in great food and high-profile events will be in Milan this summer, because the Expo-2015 World Exhibition takes place here until the end of October. The grandiose event has already attracted many guests from different countries. They came to look at the beautiful pavilions, learn more about the subject of the exhibition (food security) and see the inventions that will later quietly but firmly enter the life of every person. This is not only a public event, but also a secular event, which automatically makes Milan one of the most fashionable destinations in the summer of 2015. nine0013
Things to do: not Expo, Italy’s most stylish city lives as one. You can walk along Corso Como with its endless shops or wander around the Sforza Castle, or go to taste unusual variations of local cuisine in world-famous restaurants (Tokuyoshi is fine). Tired of the city, it is easy to get out into nature, to the water – to sit and pull your aperol spritz through a straw on the shores of Lake Como.
Baha Mar, Bahamas
Developers from around the world have a stranglehold on the village of Baja Mar and won’t let go until it becomes a luxury resort with boutiques, casinos and a bustling nightlife. They say that the place received the status of “Bahamian Riviera”, it took three and a half billion dollars. But now those who used to go to Las Vegas and St. Barths are drawn here. nine0013
Things to do: despite all the changes, authentic Caribbean cuisine has been preserved in Baja Mar. Well, the beaches with white sand, perhaps, will discourage you from looking for some other entertainment.
Tulum, Mexico
For those who are looking for chic, the direct road is not to Cancun, but to Tulum. This is actually a former Mayan city, pre-Columbian era. But it is also a very fashionable place, and it is great for summer: the climate allows it, and there are fewer people. True, the audience in Tulum is pleasant, more and more representatives of creative professions. nine0013
Things to do: An excursion to the ruins of the Indian civilization is, of course, a must, but you need to set aside time (about an eternity) to simply relax at the best hotel in Tulum – Coqui Coqui, and have a bite to eat at the stylish and very popular establishment Hartwood.
Chicago, USA
Millennium Park in Chicago, USA
Photo: View Pictures / Global Look
Chicago has more and more truly stylish hotels, and local attractions have never disappointed tourists. nine0013
Things to do: cruise on the river of the same name. As an option – a walk through the famous and spacious Millennium Park. And don’t forget that Chicago has a beach! The length of the coastline of Lake Michigan is 40 kilometers, and hotels of quite a resort type are located along it.
Fez, Morocco
Fez is haunted by the glory of Marrakesh. Here they really want to accept status travelers and make appropriate efforts. Almost every day, more and more beautiful, cozy riads are opened. Fez wants to prove that the Maghreb tale is about him too. nine0013
What to do: to walk in the souk – the oriental bazaar, because it is exciting even for the first time in your life, even for the 31st. Dine in something typically local, but at the same time luxurious (Les Trois Saveurs is the very thing).
Shelter Island, USA
The New York elite’s new summer passion is Shelter Island. The Chequit Hotel opens here in the summer, giving Upper East Siders and other similar social classes a place to stay.
Things to do: Shelter is not yet for parties, this is a young resort, and it is good for those who want to get away from everything and finally finish reading the book they started back in January. There is not much to do on the island, and that’s the whole point. The beaches are deserted, the service at the best Vine Street Café is attentive.
Bali, Indonesia
Bali, Dreamland beach
Photo: Maria Kosareva
When it’s summer in the northern hemisphere, the beaches of elite Jimbaran and bohemian Seminyak also have very comfortable weather: it’s not hot, but it doesn’t rain yet either. nine0013
Things to do: is easier said than done in Bali during the summer. People usually learn to surf at Echo Beach, purify their dharma at one of the Hindu temples, or go wild at the Potato Head Beach Club.
Los Angeles, USA
L.A. is experiencing a renaissance unlike anything it has known since the time when the kinobratia settled here and those very letters appeared on the side of that very mountain. Wonderful old theaters are being restored, while new museums, restaurants and clubs are opening. nine0013
Things to do: Settle in downtown – the area is compact enough to move around on foot. Stare at the sunbathing beauties gathered around the rooftop pool of the Ace Hotel Los Angeles. Go to Disney Concert Hall and Grand Park.
Vieques, Puerto Rico
In recent years, Puerto Rico has become famous as a luxury Caribbean hub with expensive hotels and excellent shopping. You can stay in the capital, San Juan, or you can go to the island of Vieques.
